My home has 12 yr. old GAF Architectural shingles on a 2:12 roof with Tiger Paw underlayment. The bonding on lead edges of a 3 x 3' area have come loose, allowing lift and a small drip leak directly under the area in high wind/ rain conditions. Will roof sealant/ rebonding repair be enough on those shingles or would it need replacement. 2 contractors (who gave no focus to it) want to redo 240 sq ft. with new. Thank you for the video.

When you run a straight bead like that with no gaps in the bead the water will come in threw the key way back up over the underlying shingle leak or become trapped and rot the nails out

It could, that's why its important to use a strong calking like JTS-1 (by Mule Hide) to seal the shingle after the repair. www.mulehide.com/Roofing-Products/p/JTS1JointTerminationSealant

Appreciate this video. It helped save me over $300 from a con artist trying to rip off my family replacing a SINGLE broken shingle on the roof. The old 'If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself' seems to hold true in a lot of areas in life these days. Owning a home means you need to know more about repairing your house than the people you're trying to hire who are "supposed" to know more than you, it's pretty sad you can't really find reputable, fair, honest and reliable contractors anymore.
@davidframe231118 күн бұрын
Did you want them to do it for $50??? Absolutely ridiculous you are outraged. I don’t think I’d do the job for less than $300. Many roofing companies won’t even do it. Repairs are a liability and they make no money doing it.
@ColtonUnknown2 күн бұрын
@@davidframe2311yes sir. Cost of doing business. Cost me $200 to start the truck and $100 climb the ladder lol. Also, in CA average cost for Reno/remodel/repair is about 500-1000 per foot. Lol, shingles are 3sqft. Sorry bubba, that’s gonna be a $500 job.

Allowing the sun to heat the shingles can help reduce the strength from the tar strip making it easier to insert your trowel under the shingle: my recommendation would be to start later in the day if possible when the sun is at its peak.

There are what I call Dockers'' videos and then there are real ones. Yours is one of the real ones. Thanks! UPDATE: Spent the day on the roof using your technique (wind storm damage). I didn't break one tab. I had a heat gun ready to go, but I didn't need/use it. Mine was laid on with staples but the flat bar seem to work. Needle nose pliers to grab the staples that almost come out helps. I am a bit sore (too much desk time) but feel pretty good about getting it done...right. Again Thanks!

I've been roofing close to 54 yrs. I've been to every roofing seminar in the roofing industry. This young roofer explains the basics very well. I like this video. However, I'm going to contradict the nailing part. Most shingles are tested with four nails for certification. In high wind areas six nails are usually required by city code. My point is that six nails are no better than four nails. Let me bravely go one step further. The main reason for the nails is to keep the shingles from sliding down the roof. GAF Roof manufacturer has a video with a shingle with no nails to hold them down. Thirty years ago, I read an engineering report stating the same finding. GAF, ARE ROOFING NAILS OVERRATED, video. Check it out.😊

Nice video! What would you recommend for water seeping in through rusty nails but the shingles are still in tact?
@tuketu666 Жыл бұрын
The hard part is separating the shingles. They can be very hard to separate. Using a trowel, as shown in the video, is a good choice, but sometimes they still won't come apart. Using a heat gun to soften up the adhesive (especially in colder temps), can make the separation easier.

I have done a few roofs over the years,but never repairs... I think i will start on the less damaged areas and hopefully after a few hours really get the hang of it... doing a little at a time will work best for me being in my 60's now... Good job. One thing about new shingles, you can't trust the glue strip to hold down the shingles. I always use roofing cement on the leading edges just ike you did. They used staples on my roof shingles, it's a royal pain removing them to replace a damaged shingle strip. I always use roofing nails to replace new shingles. Thanks for the video.
