• MR2 Spyder for Dummies
A C60 six-speed manual transmission (more properly transaxle) is removed from a 2zz-ge engine in a Toyota MR2 Spyder. With special attention to the transmission bolt locations and useful tips and tricks for making the process easier. Similar process would apply for a C56, C66, or any C50-series or C60-series transmission.

There's a little triangular button on the right side that you press and the cable comes right off, the thing is most people don't find it, or they install the Ubrackets backwards so you can't see it.

The support studs is a game changer. You can use a couple nuts on these as a safety to prevent the tranny from sliding off while you remove the tranny, the use the jack. Avoids having to go back and forth between the nut on the engine support and lowering the floor jack. Just position the jack before you remove the trans,ission from the studs. Use ratchet straps under the transmission and across the engine support to lift the tranny back up, slide on the studs, then secure with nuts on the studs before starting all the other bolts.

One more thing Rene - this saves you from damaging the input shaft or the clutch disc when you rest the full weight of the trans on them - as you do when there is no support. This often causes a premature clutch failure.

Used my engine hoist twice, but you have raise the jack stand to its highest level.

Any reason why an engine hoist wouldn’t work instead of the engine support bar ?

Yeah try getting under the car with the engine hoist legs under there. Ha ha. Ha ha ha ha.

Can't you use the engine mounts to support the engine? Or there are in the way?

Couldn't you just use a transmission jack, remove all the bellhousing bolts and drop the trans right out? Or do you still have to lower the motor to clear the flywheel and fender? I'm about ready to do this job soon (my first time). Thanks for the video!

With the 5-speed you can do as you said. With the six-speed, the transmission is actually longer, so you do what I did here, because otherwise it will hit the frame rail and not go any further on removal.

@@robthomas4226 Definitely yah inclining the engine will make the 6-speed install much much easier. As will using the guide bolts. And don't forget you can give the crank pulley a little jog to help the input shaft splines match up to the clutch disc splines.

Hi Mate, is your MR2 the sequential gearbox? I just completed a clutch replacement, but it is just stuck, will not go to any gear. I did not pull any hydraulics out, thinking that should work but not. Need some help, please

@@sunshinel6994 recently bought a 2002 mr2 SMT, for $2,000. Hoped to fix the issue and get some miles before doing the conversion. I noticed the HPU fluid was leaking through the GSA onto my gear stroke sensor, causing it to not go into any gear at all. Rebuilding the GSA was the only way to fix that issue and not have it keep ruining gear stroke sensors…so onto the conversion for me! But I would try pulling the gear stroke sensor (tight squeeze to remove) and testing that, also caused me to not have the indicator light show up on dash. So definitely check that sensor, and or clutch stroke sensor, both are on the bottom of the GSA. Hope that helps!

Could you give the length of the two studs after cutting , please i am getting ready to pull mine and was trying to figure the length of the two studs.

About four or five inches does it nicely. They need to give enough room for the input shaft to clear the clutch, but not so much that the cap of the trans hits the frame rail.

Is there any thing you have to do in order to remove the shifter cables? Is there a certain way to install them? I just removed this same transmission and the shifter won't go into gear like normal.

Make sure you have not crossed the cables. I have another video that covers their removal and installation is just the reverse of removal.

@@Merryfrankster_ thanks man. I actually swapped them before hand and it didn't work but something told me to swap them again and i guess the first time the left one fell to the right and i put them on the same backwards way lol Swapping them fixed it

My transmission isn't sliding off, it seems to have something holding it on somewhere

You may have missed one of the bell housing bolts. If not, find a gap where you can pry the bellhousing from the block. But make sure you have unfastened every bell housing bolt first. There is nothing else to hold the transmission to the block except possibly corrosion in the registration dowels.

@@Merryfrankster_ Thanks for your reply, it ended up being it needed a lot of prying and pulling to come off. I had it in my head that it would easily slide off haha, getting it back on will be fun!

@@clarkdef sand down the dowels a bit, and if you use the sliders it should be easy to line up and get a couple of bell housing bolts started.

@@clarkdef No. The steel dowels are the most important part of holding the block and the transmission together, the bolts are there only for clamping force. TBH I am not even sure what you are talking about. I think I said sand the dowels a little bit to get any corrosion off them so they slot back in easier.

Thank you for this Frank , i am going to do this over the next week,as i am going to change the SMT into a manual change and put in a new clutch. Thanks David ps if you know of a good video on changing the SMT system point is in the right direction. i have read up on it but it,s nice to see someone do it Thank You

@IAmSwan Yes I did replace it, it's a bit faf you have to replace the ECU and wiring harness, gear selectors in the car and on the box. Install clutch hydraulics ,pedal and pipe work. I also put a new clutch in it's an ideal time. One thing I learnt if I was to do it again i would drop the engine and gear as one whole lump. I also downloaded instructions from one of the forums I think it was Spyder Chat i will try and find it. Best of luck
