Good tute. You made removing that trim around the door handle look easier than I found it.

Alan Salt the clip part on the side the locates it can be a pain. most have these. the trick is to pull the lever to the open position and then push it in the opposite direction of the clip a little to free it. I've fitted a lot of car speakers for people over the years so guess that's come in handy for these tricky bits :) thanks for watching :)

Hi, I'm currently planning to install aftermarket speakers on my 2001 MR2 and I'm trying to figure out how to mount them. I saw some sites offered "universal" adapters, but I really wanted an opinion from someone with experience. Are they needed? Can you retrofit new speakers into original mounts or shielding? Thanks in advance for any answer as googling spyderchat etc. wasn't super helpful as most of the photos are not available anymore.

Hey no problem. The stock speaker has a plastic surround as part of the frame of the speaker. Gut the old speaker out of it completely and cut out the rear plastic frame and you can fit a 16.5cm speaker straight into it. I fit Focal AS165 components that way and they are awesome. I,ve got some pics somewhere so let me know if needed and I'll put a video together with the pics to demonstrate what I mean. :)

So I used butyl roofing tape and it works a treat! sticky as hell and CHEEEEEP!!! The crossovers were paer of the Focal As165 component package I put in. I didn't do a vid on that install...it was the early days LOL

+garry baker Hi, the speakers you need are 16.5cm. The focal 165 as components I used work excellently with the stock stereo, aftermarket head unit or amped. They are around £100 for the kit which isn't that cheap but they are good in my opinion. The tweeter will require some slight hope enlarging to fit in the stock door card position which is what I did or you can fettle them to go behind the door card in the stock position. ..door card will be easier. Woofer suits in the stock hey plastic mount once you've gutted the old speaker out of it. A little bit of sound deadening over the holes of the inner door skin ( use butyl flashing tape to save money. ..not bitumen) and the door acts like a sealed sub enclosure. Like any speaker they need a bit of a run to relax for full potential. +garry baker Hi, you'll need to either cut off the factory terminal and wire that to the crossover or put in a patch cable with connectors to go from the factory plug to the crossover. Speakers are then wired from crossover terminals to the speakers. I soldered my cable to the factory wire after cutting of the factory plug. If reusing the grey plastic surround/mount that the stock speaker is In (after gutting it) make sure you take out all of the card ring and you are left with plastic only. I think I had to drill a small hole on the side of the plastic mount to allow the cable to come back through to the door card to the crossover which I mounted on the back of door card just underneath the armrest bit. :)

The screw that holds the door pull level plastic surround on lives behind a small plastic cover that has to be levered out of the way. It won't fall off as it's a little door type cover. It is in the centre of the plastic door pull cover right behind the silver pull itself.

Yes I know that but I’m trying to find a replacement screw because the person I bought the car from put on a smaller screw and sealed it in with lock tite, so when I pulled it out to take the door panel off it wouldn’t go back in so I need a replacement

Thanks :) gut the stock speakers out of the grey housing and they will screw fine to those. You'll have to ensure you get all of the old card speaker edge out though... In no way difficult but I thought I had but there was still a few mm left in there. The tweeters won't fit in the stock location without modification to the door card and opening up the aperture of the stock one. They are awesome components. Consider applying sound deadening to the interior skin on the door and a small section on the inside of the outer skin. If you cover the openings on the inner skin the door acts as an enclosure for the woofer. Hope that helps 🙂

Sorry I seem to have missed the original question about power...I run the focal AS straight from the head unit, they are designed not to have to amp them

Also crossover is stuck to the inside on the sources towards the molding of the grab handle.
