Angela, I didn't know about the Murphy oil soap to clean my cupboards that look just like the ones you showed cleaning,,,same style and colora. . I used Lysol kitchen cleaner and the second time I prayed it on to clean the silverware drawer, the shinny finish turned dull and seemed to roll off when I used a dry towel to wipe off the Lysol. Now I can see where the finish is gone period and looks bad. What can I do to bring back the shine and luster. I think the whole kitchen cupboards have lost their luster and really looks dated now. Help.

@@AskAngelaBrown That's the first thing I thought, "WOW, this lady is very thorough". I have a job of trying to clean up a rental unit for the owner, her previous tenant had a "BUNCH" of cats, when she got sick and went in the hospital for awhile. The owner had to gather them up and take them to the humane society, but being left unattended the damage was already done. There is cat feces all over the wood floors and the smell is very bad, there is also fly feces all over the place especially the ceilings/lights/fans. The owner wants it cleaned it up, so she can get a new tenant in there as soon as possible. I'm the handyman/maintenance guy, not a cleaner. Do you have any solutions to combat this nasty/horrible situation? Please help... Thank you.

I really like that you give the safety data and recommend gloves and goggles. A few years ago I was cleaning the floor with Murphy's oil soap and unknowingly had the sprayer backwards and sprayed it in my eyes the product stings like what I couldn't believe and I was instantly blinded. After groping my way past the dog and down the hallway to the bathroom sink, flushed my eyes under the faucet until I was finally able to squint enough find the number on the label and call their Poison Control Center. I still remember the lady's voice that answered the phone because she was terrific. She told me just keep rinsing I think for 20 or 30 minutes and then my eyes would be alright. It was extremely extremely painful but my eyes are perfectly fine now and I appreciate Murphy's Oil Soap and their hotline!

Hi Angela! Every window in my house has faux wood blinds, which I am cleaning one room a day (thanks to your other amazing video "How to Clean Your Blinds"). I also started the kitchen cabinets yesterday using Liquid Gold and a cloth. It's working okay, but my husband said it smells like motor oil in the house now. Oh no! So, I will switch to Murphy's. This is absolutely game changing. For reference, I painted our wood kitchen cabinets a creamy white by hand a few years ago with Benjamin Moore Aura paint. Loved how they turned out but had no clue how to clean them and was fearful of ruining my many hours of hard work and expensive paint. Using Angela’s second method made them beautiful again without damaging the paint finish. I used the white (softest) brush overall and the small yellow brush in the grooves. The Murphy’s premixed bottles smell incredible. Smells so much better than the concentrate, which is a wonderful product but the smell isn’t nearly as good. I’m going to get so much use out of this brush set and cleaner. Thank you! 🙏

What a lovely thing to say. Thank you. For the tops of the cabinets you don't need to use a drill brush and if you fry foods, cook bacon or smoke in the house you will most likely have some black tar up there. Standing on a step ladder that allows you to reach the top you can use some paper towels and Krud Krutter Original Degreaser/Cleaner Concentrate amzn.to/31srwvp to cut through the grease and icky stuff we usually find up there and then toss out the paper towels when you're done. You don't want that stuff going through the wash on a cloth. LOL. :-) Let me know how it goes. :-)

Anything would be better. I think true porcelain coating would not be harmed? Could the enamel paint I messed up on my fridge have been softened by oils or a cleaner like 409? Didn’t live far from their plant in Medina Ohio. But, I’m sorry, Murphy’s is NOT a grease cutter. I’m sure it would eventually clean the icky, but that’s a lot of scrubbing! If cabinets are that bad, it’s time to bing our ammonia! Boom, you’re done with one wipe. Then go over with Murphy’s for that great fragrance and shine.

My cupboards are very old. I tried Murphy's which left them sticky. So I sprayed Windex with ammonia on them, used a non scratching sponge, went over with damp Terry type towel and dried with another towel. Took off loads of dirt. I don't know if this would wreck finish on newer cupboards. How do you do yours?

Murphy’s Oil soap spray was a revelation on my wooden cabinets!! But unfortunately if it strays onto the walls surrounding your cabinets, and you try to paint those walls, I discovered that the paint doesn’t really adhere/stick properly, and peels right off!!! Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and support. This is not the product I would use on the outside of a microwave (if it's stainless steel or plastic). While it is a soap and an oil soap, your best bet would be to treat the outside of the microwave with something designed for that type of surface and the type of soil you are drying to remove. Does that make sense?

Great video. Thanks! About 30 years ago, I moved into a house that had many kitchen cabinets. The cabinet doors and drawer fronts were very dull. There was a sticky film all over them that had attracted dust for 20 years. I could scrape the thick, sticky stuff off with my thumbnail. Before trying to clean them, I asked the owner what she had used to clean the cabinets (I though it might help me decide what kind of cleaner to use). She told me that (for 20 years) she had used Murphy's Oil Soap, folllowing instructions on the bottle. When scrubbing with different cleaners didn't remove the film, I used a putty knife and furniture stripper. In my current home, I had new solid wood maple cabinets installed. Because of the gunk on the cabinets in the rental house, I didn't want to use Murphy's Oil Soap. Instead, I've just been wiping them down with a damp cloth. Now they need a deep cleaning. I'm wary of using Murphy's Oil Soap. How can I be sure it won't add a sticky film to my cabinets? Also, where did you buy the drill brush? Thanks.

Hi Bobbie, Here is the paid link to the Drill Brush Set amzn.to/39E8kDa and as for the Murphy Oil Soap - it is an oil soap - so it shouldn't cause any sticky residue but break down the sticky residue. I wonder if that is what caused her sticky cupboards or that she didn't use enough of it to remove the sticky. If your cabinets are REALLY bad sticky and gunky - you can use mineral oil (they use this kind on cutting boards amzn.to/3M0LWCp) and a cellulose sponge with no scrubbie. (they look like this amzn.to/37XVf7n but can be found at the dollar store.) Pour a bit of mineral oil in a saucer and dip your damp but squeezed out sponge in the mineral oil and wipe it over the icky sticky gunky cupboard fronts. The oil will remove the sticky stuff and you can wipe it off with a cloth. I will make you a video to show what I mean. It's a simple process but works wonders when the other method fails.

I love Murphy's oil soap and have used it for nearly 30 years, recommended by my mom who used it many years before that. I use it at home as well as when I clean for others because it's safe to use and works well on moderately dirty cabinets that are new or get cleaned frequently. However, on extremely greasy, grimey, thick gunk on old cabinets that haven't been cleaned in many, many years, especially the cabinets above the stove in a home in which they probably don't use the hood vent as often as they should and do a lot of frying, it's not enough. I did a lot of research and in that case you need a mixture of very hot water, vinegar, and dawn, a scrubby sponge and brushes as shown in the video, and copious amounts of baking soda. It'll take a lot of elbow grease and sometimes 4 or 5 cleanings to get the many layers of gunk off, depending upon how bad it is, but that's the only thing that's worked for me. After that, a regular, frequent (at least monthly) quick wipe down of the cabinets with Murphy's is usually sufficient for maintenance. The key is to never let it get that bad, especially on older, more porous wood.

White vinegar works. I moved into a flat with a horrible old kitchen with years of grease and nicotine stuck on the kitchen cupboards and worktops. Ugh! The landlord didn't get it clean before I moved in. I tried to use a dedicated kitchen cleaning product with very hot water and a scrubbing pad. After working hard for some time, my joints flared up and the cupboard I was working on still felt tacky :( Then I decided to try using vinegar - it had worked to remove sticky residue from sale stickers on a new pine chest - and it was amazing! It cut through the hardened grease, almost like magic! I then used an antibacterial cleaner over the whole kitchen. I bought a rechargeable battery cleaner brush that spins like the drill bit brush. I haven't used it because I was worried about spraying water everywhere. But after watching this, I'm going to give it a go!

I grew up in a house with wood paneling.. yep, that's how old I am! 😅 I remember we used A LOT of Murphy's Oil Soap ...the diluted, longer way of cleaning on the paneling. Not sure whose brilliant idea it was to put wood paneling on our kitchen walls! 🙄😂 It made for some long weekends, especially doing spring cleaning! This house we grew up in was built in 1929 and had not really been updated much over time. We moved into it in the early 80s, and let's just say it had been repainted/ wall papered/ contact papered over multiple times before we got there!! Which the paneling was actually hiding some fire smoke damage from who knows when..so we just left the paneling in place lol! Oddly, ALL of the cabinets and drawers, window sills, etc. had very thick built up layers of paint rather than stained/ finished surfaces. However, this house was huge and had paneling in the living rooms..yes it had 2 , or like one HUGE one that was separated by a big arch way type wall between them! All wood paneling as well. Also used Murphy's on the very large kitchen table, pine I believe, that was actually hand made by my uncle. So I've continued to use it in all the places I've lived in. So the place I live now is an apartment that clearly has not had much care or attention given to my kitchen cabinets. I have never seen so much gunk, food & grease on cabinets in my life.. and all covered over with a very sticky/tacky thick layer of yucky stuff ( assuming it's years of grease built up) even so much of that top tacky layer on the magnets that are meant to keep the cabinet doors shut! So they won't maintain contact and stay closed! However, these are very cheap cabinets that the doors and drawers seem like press board with some kind of thin veneer. Splintered off the drawers in some places. I've tried everything else, nothing gets through all that nasty gunk! I remembered I had some Murphy's Oil Soap, and want to try it on them, but is it going to work for these veneer type finished surfaces? I'm just wondering about what kind of using scrubbies I could use with it to cut through this really thick sticky build up, that's clearly taken years of neglect to get this bad on a veneer!? I don't have the power tool scrubber set up, I have to go with elbow grease for now. Any suggestions??

Jennifer, Since some of the drawers have splintered I assume it’s the same material so you will need to be very careful with the cabinets. If you want you can try the Murphy Oil Soap in an inconspicuous area to see how the material hold up.

Murphy’s isn’t my go to brand, but I’ve gotten very good results when I do use it. I haven’t used used it to take gunk off of cabinets, I’ll give it a shot sometime soon.

Angela BrownI Well first I got to say that the houses that I clean with that many panels are well kept and don’t have gunk issues like that. I suppose I’ve been blessed, the places that do have been around 1,500 sq ft homes with kitchens that aren’t that overwhelming in terms of size. The places with gunk are almost always smokers homes, so I assume nicotine and dirt are the main ingredients in that gunk. I use a non toxic eco friendly all purpose concentrate by a company called consolidated chemical works out of Chicago. For things like gunk I reduce the amount of water I add to my solution by 1/3 when mixing it and replace it with cleaning vinegar. I spray it on the gunk at the very beginning of the cleaning to pretreat it. By the time I get to them it generally is much looser and easier to get off with a sponge pad (only needing to apply minimal pressure with the pad) and then I wipe the rest away with my towel. I usually then spray and wipe them again with some method or seventh generation wood cleaner. It really doesn’t take much time at all as long as I time things properly. Sadly the owner of CCW has retired and I won’t be able to buy his products much longer so Murphy’s might become my go to product soon enough.

I have started cleaning my kitchen cabinets. Did not know about Oxo cleaning brushes or the brush for a drill. Wow! Game changer. Thanks.
