I was just getting ready to buy one of those pulling adapters that lets you screw a pair of vice grips on a slide hammer's end thread. Glad I watched you do it with just that screw and a pair of channel locks. I think I've purchased enough specialty tools for one lifetime, LOL. Thanks again, and I really enjoy your vids. I'd bring my old bikes to you any day if you were closer.

Thanks I appreciate that, yep a lot of the old ways still work on the newer bikes without buying any specialty tools. Glad the video helped and thanks for watching

I purchased a kit that came with an "extra" seal. I remember from my MMI days sooooomething about a fifth gear seal. Your video got me back on track. Thank you.

Thank you for your videos. Reminds me of one of my good friends that I lost a long time ago the stuff I haven’t forgotten. I’m so glad there’s guys out there just like you they could help all of us make things right with our bikes. Keep the good work up.

Lots of good info on your videos. Getting ready to tear into my 2003 Ultra classic 100th anniversary’s primary to find the cause of a new “supercharger” sound. Watching lots of videos. You have lots of good info. Thanks!

Have you replaced the rear tire recently? When i went from a dunlop d404 to a shinko 777 the plastic belt guard was making contact with the sidewall making a "supercharger" type sound at 50-60mph. I removed the guard and theres clear as day contact marks on it from where the tire was rubbing. Hope this helps as a starting point where to look, good luck if you havent already fixed it.

If you only use the special tools once, then get what you can afford; it's STILL cheaper than paying labor costs to have a mechanic do it. It's less than one hour labor's charge if you go to Harbor Freight. The race puller/installer is easy to use, and the pulley nut wrench is easy, as well. Well worth buying.

I agree, labor costs out weight the price of the tool if you take your bike into a shop. Thanks for watching and ride safe

Thanks for posting. I've been into my 01 RK before to fix nagging leak but overlooked the 5th gear seal. So naturally continued to leak, why would HD leave that out of the manual? Makes no sense other than to have one throw up their hands and take to the shop. Keep um on the road.
@tinkeringwithharleys2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment glad the video helped. I have no idea why it's not in the manual. I found it the hard way with the first 5 spd I replaced seals on. Replaced the seals and it still leaked, took it apart and took a real close look and found the 5th gear seal. I didn't even know what to call it when I went to replace at the parts counter. I don't know if it was a oversight or deliberate. But frustrating to say the least. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for sharing. Its appreciated greatly. Would you be able to create a video that explains what a worn pulleys look like? Both the trans pulley and rear pulley. If we in there changing seals it would be a good time to look at pulleys considering the size of the job.
@tinkeringwithharleys Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoy the videos. Excellent suggestion, unfortunately the drive pulley's wearing out is not a common occurrence, and I don't have any worn out pulley's laying around that I could use to make a video. But if you do a inspection on the pulley's while you have things apart what you would be looking for is chipped teeth and burrs and uneven teeth. You would usually find these things on the rear pulley since that is exposed. If a pebble gets up in it that can cause some damage. Also over tightened belt can cause wear and a misaligned rear wheel. If you find 1 pulley has damage or excessive wear you would need to replace both pulley's so there matched. Since Harley came out with the drive belt in 1980 I can count on one hand the number of times I've found wear or damaged pulley's that I've had to replace. So the likelihood of making a video on them is slim. But I definitely appreciate the suggestion. Thanks for watching and ride safe

Having done all these seals in 2021, that 5th gear seal is a lot more frustrating when the input shaft is sticking through the center. It's often missed because it's hardly visible when assembled. I'll be looking at your other videos too.
@tinkeringwithharleys2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, when the main shaft is there it can be a real pain to get the 5th gear seal out. Plus I've never seen it mentioned in a service manual. Thank for your comment and thanks for watching.

Appreciate all of your videos. Working in a severe inner primary leak on an ‘01 RG I just picked up. Do any of your videos show the installation of the 5th gear seal?
@tinkeringwithharleys2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Unfortunately no, the video I did on seal installations the camera I used failed to record by the time I realized it all the seals had been installed. However the 5th gear seal is easy to install. If you're doing it on the bike all the trans is still in the bike oil the 5th gear seal up and slide it over the main shaft and into the main drive gear push it in as far as you can with your fingers then take a flat punch and lightly tap it in until it seats. If the main shaft is not in the trans take a socket that's the same size as a seal and install it into the drive gear by tapping it with a hammer you'll hear the tone change when it seats. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching. I hope this helps you.

I appreciate that. Also when you install the fifth gear seal. After you've installed it fill the trans with oil if it's installed properly there will be no leak if there's something wrong it will leak immediately. This saves you from putting everything back together and finding out you have a leak after you've got the bike all back together again. Thanks again for watching

I have an 2007 Softail Springer CVO (6 Speed), do you know if this transmission has the metal spacer? I'm in the process of doing this and there is no metal spacer, the one that's there doesn't come out.

5 Speed Trans on an EVO, is this basically the same process re the three seals?
@tinkeringwithharleys2 жыл бұрын
Yep all 5 speeds are the same. They have 3 seals, the main seal, quad seal and 5th gear seal. Also if you do all the seals the pawl seal for the pawl shifter. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.

While installing the 5th gear seal did i damage the drive shaft while installing the seal . I do not have a Tims seal tool and used a piece of pvc pipe that worked but noticed that the shaft did not free spin after. It feels like it is egage. Any advice
@tinkeringwithharleys Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, I doubt you damaged the main shaft by using PCV pipe to install the 5th gear seal. There's always a slight drag on the shaft anyway. In all likelihood while you were installing the seal the main shaft moved back slightly, when you install the pulley (if you removed it) it will pull it back out. When you install the clutch basket it will definitely put it back in position. There's always a slight bit of movement in the main shaft. So what you're experiencing is normal. This is my best guess without seeing the bike myself. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
