How to remove vinyl decals and stripes

Hello! Some decals don't always come off easily so here are some tips and tricks to help. I actually found that a product called rapid tac adhesive remover works MUCH better at removing the adhesive and doesnt require all of the scrubbing and mixing of chemicals. Read the instructions carefully with this product.

I used a product called pure citrus. It’s a air freshener I got at Walmart for three dollars. Once you get the vinyl off this product works good for removing the adhesive. Let it sit and then scrape with a Bondo spreader.

@@JohnDoe-nz6bk, Don’t work. It dries too fast. I ended up using one of those eraser wheels and a drill. Came off pretty easily after I let the car sit in the sun. It just takes time.

Id definitely buy extra material if it is your first time wrapping a car. It is likely that a mistake will be made. It takes year of practice to get wrapping down to look like paint

Hello Tarah, in this situation id say to start with a good clay bar, buff, and wax. Sometimes after sitting for a couple of days the yellow will fade away as well! Let me know if this helps!

Im sorry to hear that! That means the vinyl is very dried up. My next step would be to try to remove the vinyl with a steamer. If that does not work then you may need to use an eraser wheel to remove the vinyl and paint thinner to remove the leftover hardened glue. When it comes to paint thinner, it is very important not to rub too hard in the same spot for too long or you may cause permanent paint damage. There is always the option of using a chemical that is not as strong and spending extra time with scrubbing

@@ReimaginedWraps yeah i had the vinyl for 3 yrs only i dont think its that long to flake. is acetone safe enough to use aswell?my finger and nail are hurting now since its the only thing that peels of the vinyl. even the credit card or laminated paper dont help either. ima try the steamer😆

If the car wasn’t washed regularly or sat in the sun for extended periods of time, it will dry out the vinyl faster. Depending on the brand of vinyl that was installed it will also make a difference in how long it lasts. The steamer is my go to in situations like that. Im not sure about using acetone, you never know when it comes to harsh chemicals. I use the paint thinner all the time with no issues. A plastic scraping tool may help with the steamer

@@ReimaginedWraps oh i see, before i wash my car every 2 weeks i noticed im kind of scratching the paint even using soft brush and sponges. so i decided to wash it 1 a month. if ever, i usuallt parked on a shaded or with roof. but i guess that the vinyl isnt made to last long too. thank you so much for the info😁👍

TheOutlawJoseyWales What i found that works even better is called rapid tac adhesive remover. Pay close attention to the instructions though, it is very potent and will get the adhesive off without any extensive scrubbing

Thank you for the recommendation, this glue was too stubborn for even goof off. I have learned a lot since the time i did this removal. Nowadays i would have used paint thinner and it would have done the trick easily

Paint thinner? How can you use that without damaging the paint?

@@Myhouseisclean paint thinner will not go through a clear coat if used carefully. If you used paint thinner on bare paint it will rub right off.

If you have to call the customer to ask if him if they want The glue remover then you shouldn’t be doing the job. And next stop the best and easiest way to remove the glue is by using a little bit of lacquer thinner on a rag or use Goo off. Both of those will remove it fast easy and safe for the paint

When it comes to pricing, my clients and i are always of the understanding up front that when it comes to vinyl removal we charge by the hour. There are many variables when it comes to removing vinyl, such as how long it has been installed, what materials were used, how it was cared for, how much sun exposure it has had. Sometimes it comes off in 5 minutes, sometimes it comes off in 5 hours. Up front he knew this and we agreed on a set starting price. He did not want to continue with the added time that this job would take.

Then you call telling him that you need another $100 bucks because of the glue. As the customer I would be disappointed. As the pro (you) I would be embarrassed that I did not cover that base when I told him the price. I hope this clarifies my comment. Anyhow best wishes for 2023. @@ReimaginedWraps i saw your vid because tomorrow I will try to remove cooked vinyl stripes from a 4 year old Mini without burning up or scratching up the silver paint. So I watched a bunch of vids including yours. I have lots of appropriate experience and am slow and meticulous. I will use the heat gun technique. I will heat the entire three feet of the wide stripes to get started. Just to get it around 100 degrees. I have the temperature gun to help. I’ll start at an end with the surface about 140 degrees trying not to melt my teflon spatula. If that succeeds, then adhesive removal, wax and residue removal and polishing will prep for the new stripes. I suspect that this process will have the potential for disaster. I’ll let you know how it goes.
