This is BEYOND helpful! I have a custom closet being installed which didn't include demo or retouching before install so I am forced to do so on my own. However following these steps makes my life easier and I feel so much more at ease now. Thank you!

This is the best video I could find on this topic! So thank you! My husband and I took out some unnecessary shelves in our closet and it took us maybe 30 minutes. Ran into two unexpected drywall screws though.

It was the first video I watched and so far it was the best out of 7 videos how to remove buil-in. Many thanks.

Good video Derek. Some points to add: Demo is important time to wear safety glasses as you can’t be sure to control debris. When pulling nails, good idea to have a large putty knife or some other oversized piece for the hammer to pivot on while pulling nails. If painting, best to prime/seal first, as these surfaces are often unprimed. If no primer is used, the texture will be different between the previously painted and unpainted areas.

Great video! I made sure the scores were as deep and consistent as possible and feel like I minimized damage. I really appreciate the step-by-step for each piece as I am a total newbie. Worked perfectly to remove the builder-grade closet shelf! Thank you!

Thanks for the video. Had better success using a crowbar. Yes, left a small hole that needed patching. However this was helpful.

Was just about to do this job for my daughters closet. So glad I found your video before starting. Was just going to start banging away with a sledgehammer. Helpful tip about cutting the caulking first. Thank you!

This was exactly what I was looking for. Got these shelves in my laundry room and I can't fit a stacked washer/dryer in there because of them, so out they come. Thanks Derrek.

Yes, great video! And Derek, I was thinking the same thing as the guy below...you need to protect your eyes! Also, do you live anywhere near Philadelphia? I need someone to "prep" my closet, just like that, before the closet install people will do their thing. I"m shocked there seems to be no closet company in the Philly area that does the demo as part of the job. Heck, the Window guys and Bath Fitting companies do it all. Just sayin...

Hello here, what if you have a wooden hanging rod in it too? No end caps just goes straight into the side support pieces? How would you get that out? Would you have to cut the wooden dowel to get out? Or be able to get out in one piece?
@derrekholland52079 ай бұрын
I’ve seen closets that the support has a hole drilled into it that supports the closet rod. The only way to remove it is cut the pole or remove the side supports then maneuver the pole out of the support.

Exactly what I need done. How much does this typically cost to get done?
@derrekholland520711 ай бұрын
Just having shelves removed and closet painted runs $400-800 depending on closet size. Closet systems vary widely depending on size, features materials etc. Reach in closets are typically $750-2000 walk-in start around $1500 -7500 usually.

Stupid question but you’re just using a normal hammer right?
@derrekholland52072 ай бұрын
Yes regular hammer. It the heavier you can swing the better, if it’s a lightweight finishing hammer it will be more work.
