@WillGibbons3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for sure. In the bottom of the material properties for the anisotropic material, you see a section where you can change the direction from radial to linear. Just make sure it's set to linear. Then, make sure if you use a linear brushed procedural texture, that you orient it in the right direction.

Very cool video. I had a few hiccups in using a different model than yours. So the Brushed Radial texture needed some adjusting to get to sit right. Kinda hit the breaks on the flow but seeing all the other material graph tricks like color to number and color composite in context was much needed as they are hard to understand from other material graph videos where they are just described verbally and not used in action. Thank you!

How would you render a transparent 3D knit mesh? Let's assume it's a mesh that's stretched over a frame and modelled solid like 1mm thick. Or would you use a surface?
@WillGibbons5 жыл бұрын
Oops. I missed this. Yes. I'd model the item to be the fabric. Then, I'd use the weaver procedural texture. To learn more about that, check out the latest MGM video with the ripstop material. Unfortunately, KeyShot doesn't have any way to do proper knit materials. An image texture would be your best bet.

Great idea! I can try to touch on knit fabrics at some point. There's no good way to do it procedural in KeyShot yet. I kind of faked it in that rendering. Also, that model came with UVs. That said, I do plan on touching on UVs before too long. It's a big topic and I want to make sure I have practical solutions for you before making any sort of video on the topic. Nothing is worse than a video that doesn't solve any problems.

Can you tell us or make a video on 3d models? how do you design? What about linking and unlinking materials before importing it into keyshot?
@WillGibbons5 жыл бұрын
Sure. My only hesitation is that there are so many ways to do this. Many programs, many methods and my channel is mostly focused on rendering. That said, I'd have fun I'm sure creating some tutorials that walk through the whole process of modeling, rendering and post-production. As far as linking/unlinking, you need to be able to apply a different color to a body or surface within your 3D model prior to bringing it into KeyShot. This will accomplish this. An exception to this rule is if you've built your model in a CAD application and have separate bodies or components/assemblies. I hope that helps a bit. It's a surprisingly nuanced topic with lots of exceptions to the rule.

Thanks! I am actually doing satin finish stainless steel right now. But I have a hard time with Bump. How would you add that hockey-ice.jpg texture to a Bump map? Since we could not use Color to Number(with it's "Input to") or other Utility nodes with Bump map (unfortunately! and frankly do not understand why) I don't know how to add it to a Bump map with cutting out most of the scratches. I want to add only a few(2-4) slight scratches to my material but all textures with scratches that I've found(on Poliigon.com, for instance) are too much. Eventually, I've photoshopped one of those(with brush)) but I am not good in Photoshop so it took too much time and I am not fully satisfied. Since I have to make more similar models I would appreciate your advice.
@WillGibbons5 жыл бұрын
You can use a bump add node to combine bump textures. Also, you can use a color to number and just adjust the 'output to' value for bump height (not bump). I'd recommend just using the procedural 'scratches' texture for making some small scratches and customizing the way they look. Let me know if that helps.
@ilikeskies5 жыл бұрын
@@WillGibbons Yeah, I know about Bump Add node and Bump Height channel but these won't help me with this task) And I've tried procedural Scratches (started with them): they can be either straight or "noisy", but in my case scratches should be more like splines (bent). Thanks for the quick reply!

One that I've struggled with in Keyshot are plastics in well lit environments. Nearly all plastics are translucent. And if you have a thin bit, well lit, then it's going to be lighter. The default plastic looks more like ceramic. But as soon as you try and do something like translucent, cloudy plastic, or god forbid Scattering medium, then your render times Skyrocket. And you have to wait quite some time just to see the result. Loking at things on my desk, a Nerf gun has some good examples. I have a nerf proton, the green series, and for all intents and purposes, it's opaque. But when you actually light it, the bright orange and green plastics (I guess that's everything that isn't painted) has quite a bit of translucency. But it's Not very transparent at all. And the green, I'd say is like a cloudiness of .99. The orange also has the problem of having phosphorescence in it, which is always a challenge, but that might be a task for another day. I'm after getting the plastic to be Nearly opaque. I can get wax to look great, a nice cloudy transparent plastic that looks more like a gummy bear, but Nearly opaque is quite challenging. I've tried several things, but I'm never truly happy with the results. I'm just curious what you would come up with. The Nerf Jolt would be a nice simple example, just be sure you use one of the more opaque ones as an example. They make that one out of transparent as well, and that's just your typical transparent plastic.
@WillGibbons5 жыл бұрын
Noted. Thanks for being through in your explanation. I've run into this as well and will see what I can pull together in an attempt to address these challenges.
@AndyEngelkemier5 жыл бұрын
@@WillGibbons Well I got something I'm happy with, using the "translucent" (not advanced) shader. 75% grey, internal "lit" color, 125mm, main color, specular white-ish, roughness .085 for nerf style plastic. Samples 96 WOW. No GI. Translucent Advanced took several times longer to render, but without noticeable difference, so being able to have "just as good" results on the cheater shader is always a win. I'm surprised at the translucency distance, because that seems a Bit far. I was expecting to set my distance to something more like 20mm. But if you have any tricks for being able to preview changes...that'd be helpful. Because it's Slow. Also realtime doesn't quite looks the same as custom render, but realtime render takes twice as long if you have a reasonable amount of self shadow.
@WillGibbons5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyEngelkemier Suggestions for previewing changes... really, I just use the region render (ctrl+shift+r). As for the RT-view not matching final output... this is to be expected if you're using Custom Control since you're essentially creating the sampling algorithm with your own input rather than using max. time or max. samples which is what the RT-v uses. I hope that helps.
