This tutorial goes through how to hide objects but preserve the reflections and shadows cast by them on other objects in a scene in Maya Arnold.

That multiple selection trick is great. I always do render layer to achieve the same thing. Thanks now I learn a new quick trick

This works well with the Arnold Render Layer panel but is very unintuitive. So thanks for this alternative approach! Some things that totally threw me for Render Layers. In order to see the "Absolute override" menu item under the right click menu for primary visibility, you must first turn on the eyeball icon for your (Red) render layer (Not the Scene Layer). Then you can see the "Create Absolute Override" in your right click menu for the selected scene object/shape node. Secondly, do not use the isolate buttons in the collection layers if you want to see the shadows of the invisible objects. The isolate button overrides everything, including shadows and reflections. Instead click the checkbox for the Absolute Override layer you just created for the render layer panel. Also notice that you will have three layers for each collection if done correctly. You will have your yellow collection layer for Transforms; under that, your collection layer for Shapes; Then under that you will see your green Absolute Override Layer.

Another Awesome Tutorial which most users never knew existed. This should also help minimise Render time, I guess

Render layers would ideally let you separate the bits you mentioned by adding each group of objects in separate collections and then adding a primary visibility overwrite to the collection you don't want to see - similar to what you did in through attribute spread sheet but it won't actually change the setup of your scene but it'll do it at render time which is slightly less destructive! Where I'm now stuck is that I'm trying to render an object which casts shadows on another object but without the second object being visible but only the shadow with an alpha - i. e. what aiShadowmatte material does but if I try adding that as a render layer ovewrite, it doesn't give me the alpha... Not sure if is a bug or I'm doing something wrongly. :(

So happy that I found your channel! You just solved my problem - I am fresh to Maya after years of Blender (frankly I feel like I lost these years but well...) and looking for sometimes simple things. Please if you can keep on doing these. All the tips are massively useful! Plus allow me to complement your voice - its extremely pleasant to hear and I am glad you are not one of these screaming, exaggerating youtubers. Thank you so much and greetings from Mexico! Instant sub - looking forward to see more :)

Thank you for this! To this day Arnold won't save shadow matte alpha using the GPU (WHY???), so at least I'd like to render a separate pass for the shadow using CPU but without using the extra time to render all objects. I think this will do the trick!

Beautiful tutorial, now my problem is i need the reflections on the object and hide the object and the shadows, but when i uncheck the cast shadows and the primary visibility, the reflection of the hidden object look half opacity, i don't know what to do :(

I'll try to explain this better, i just want to preserve reflections, not the shadow, but when cast shadow is unchecked the reflection is screwed up

this is a fantastic tutorial, and can help understand the process clearly, would it be easier to use render layers though, especially if you are compositing in a software like Nuke? interested to hear your take on this

Hi! I am currently using Maya 2022, and I have experience using render layers. I am using the new setup, not legacy. My question is, how do I create a layer for reflections only and keep the alpha of the object that is being reflected. Right now, I am getting the alpha of the plane that my object is reflecting on, but I want to be able to pull the object's reflection alpha for compositing in Nuke. I was hoping the setup would be similar to a shadow layer, but it is not quite working the way I would want it too. Thanks!

Hi! What if i want to playblast separately with some lights? I playblasted background and character separately as image png, and assembled them in premiere pro.But for some reason a strange white outline appears around objects, i also tried to playblast without motion blur, but it did not help .Thanks in advance!
@neeshma
@neeshma 2 жыл бұрын
Hi There! We usually use playblasts as 'temporary' videos to see how the animation or set up is looking before rendering. If you're just using playblasts for that, it should be okay to simply hide the objects in the outliner and render separately - primary visibility is more for renders. Could you show me an example of the white outline issue (if you have a link)? You could try increasing the quality/resolution of your playblast
