I just finished watching part 3 on reshaping balance springs. It has helped me tremendously! Especially the basic rules of 90 and 180 degrees. Also the pendulum demonstration was so informative. I never realized that the amplitude doesn't change the timing. I learned so much from Mark from the watch channel and now I've picked up some essential tips from you. Thanks so much for the information you provide for amatures like me.

I'm 3rd generation watchmaker, n I was helping a friend. So I must say your video is very spot on with very good techniques. Sometimes its very hard to explain hands on experience into words. Your video was perfect for me to share with him because he lives far from me. I wanted to thank you, with a tip I help new watchBREAKERS 🤣 JK we've all been there. Nothing wrong with failing, because u only get better 😉 So here's my tip, have your students practice on very thin copper wire, it's manageable n very cheap. And they can cut pieces off a roll of copper n just wrap it around a finger. And randomly what imperfections are present, that would be your mission. Hope that helps, thanks again! Straight in the deep end with my first movement service and the watch ran at the end, quite well , but a day later on the wrist and it was running 1000+spd fast. The hairspring was touching in places and so I watched this video 3 times and set about fixing it. Need some smaller tweezers, and a stronger loupe or microscope but with a bit pushing and pulling the hairspring is now concentric again. Just got to put it back together and see what happens now ! Thanks for the tips and really good explanation, without which I would not know where to start.

Well it works and we have a rate a few secs a day off and well within the regulator adjustment so that is ok. Beat error now miles off though and it is fixed stud, so off with the balance again I suppose, still time to break it !

The outermost part of the spring is the terminal curve and I agree, it always looks twice as bad as it really is. If you get stressed, have a coffee break. If you get locked in, you could make it worse 👍🏻

SOmetimes springs that were bent , dont work well anymore, the twists created weak points of eleasticity and the spring done behave as a whole one.Had a spring that was flat but when working jumped like hell looked like the weaves in the sea.

OMG Kalle this is exactly what I need to learn. I've been trying to return a hairspring to normal for a while and I just make it worse. I thought it was unrecoverable because the windings are bent and also out of plane. I will use your advice now to fix my errors. I did just an hour ago ordered a balance with hairspring from Ravensbergen Watch Shop in Sassenheim NL.

I’d love to see and hear more tips like this how you can convert a cheap tool. Also where we can get good affordable tools either second hand or new, but as soon as tools are needed it wipes out profit or makes a watch for yourself a lot more expensive. But you know all this! Hi Kalle, thanks for this - fantastic information and advice as always! I do have one question. I understand how to lightly bend (stroke) the spring to make sure that it is in the round, but was wondering what the technique for making sure that the hairspring is adjusted in the flat? I have seen the adjustment on other videos using 2 angled tweezers, similar to yours, but don't understand whether you need to twist the spring slightly, as it's likely a small twist in the spring that is causing it to be out of flat. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you for your video's. This series was very helpful and on point. I know this video is a year old but maybe you will answer a couple questions. Technique of reshaping to round and center works like a charm. reshaping for flat seems a little more challenging. Correcting the flat also seems to work very well, except when the out of flat part is in the FRIST circle of the spring from the collet. Methods are the same no doubt, but the difficulty level to get it right without disturbing the other corrections seems to increase 10 times. Any tips on this? And most important, when do you decide that a spring is no longer going to hold the reshaping with the strength needed to ensure accurate time keeping? For me it was removed reshaped and installed 5 times before I replaced the balance complete because I do not know how or have the tools to vibrate a hairspring. Tips??

Hi! And thank you for a very interesting and instructional set of videos! May I ask something? On Twitch you opened a mainspring barrel and you took out the barrel arbor using a special set of tweezers. May I ask where would one get one of those tweezers? It resembles a Bergeon 4852 roller setting tool, but I think this is something stronger. Thank you!

Cool! will remember the process. I am new and taking online course for watches (pocket watches for me)....I have a Eljin 15 jewel PW I got for $40, winder will not turn and Balance spring looks like a mess. when I finally get more tools will get to it. Oh showing how to hold tweezer and have it on the mat for support was gold. I just had to order one of that style tweezer :o)

It is better to remove the hairspring from the balancewheel so the weight of the stud (end bit) will not interfere with the shape of the balancespring Fabrizio.

Great question Robert, I was trained as electrical engineer (but did't like it), in my mid thirties i caught the horological bug. I went to the Dutch watchmaking school, after that i taught there for 2 years. later i went to Switzerland for further training at WOSTEP in Neuchâtel and the amazing KHWCC in Le Locle.

I've tried adjusting hairsprings and truth is, I cannot do it, I just wreck more than ever. It's not just a matter of calm nerves, I'm on a good level of Karma when attempting this task. What conclusions have I come to. The hobbyist just ain't got the right equipment to do this job. It is far easier to buy a new balance assembly and that is just what I do and recommend others to do too. I'm not blaming my tools. I'm blaming my lack of them. I haven't got a £3000 Stereoscope, nor have many other hobbyists. I'm repairing Vostok, not Rolex.😂 No matter how much you spend on a set of tweezers, if you bought them on eBay they won't be a match for this Guy's Bergeon set. I use a headset and a microscope that feeds to my PC monitor, even that ain't good enough for hairspring work in my opinion. Too fiddly by far. Kalle is a genius at what he does, but it is a bit unfair that this is a tutorial aimed to get the average hobbyist up to this level of craftmanship. It could destroy the love of the hobby for some here. I've felt the strain of this. Spending four hours trying to tweak a balance spring back into shape only to "F" it up when trying to remount it into the balance bridge is a total heartbreaker. I've been there and done that. It's far better to know your limitations and enjoy the hobby for the satisfaction it brings, rather than the frustration it could bring.
