Hey Paul. Your furring strip process came in handy. I've used it more than once on my four problem areas. But unlike you, I dont have the luxury of skim coating ALL MY REPAIRS, like you. I have to blend/float my repairs into existing knockdown texture, which I've gotten pretty good at, thanks to you. So you are displaying to the public a process you can mask with slim coating, in the end. I'd like to see a repair job to completion w/o skim coating afterwards. I'm not trying to bust your balls; I want to learn the repair basics. These are "ceiling" problems I've run into after "digging in": 1) ceiling joists in close proximity that are out of plane. I have 2 joists within 6 inches on a vault out of plane. I built up one joist with compressed cardboard shims to make parallel with adjacent joists so the new DW patch doesn't crumble when I screw it in place. Original builders just nailed it in (w/o shims), forcing that section of DW to crumble, then they mudded over it. They hid it with up to 1" of mud! I dont do bandaids. I fix root problems. 2) a 4-ft crack found one side of DW nailed to air. I glued/screwed w/construction grade adhesive a new 2"×4" sister to an existing joist to give my patch something to attach to, other than air. Then, 3) an 8-ft hairline ceiling crack: I removed paint, joint compound, and tape, down to DW. Then I cut out, per your tutorial, slots, between my 24" centered joists, and layed 4 each, 20" (1"×4") furring strips along the 8' crack between each joist, to give both DW sections something to secure to, because this long seam, both sides, was also nailed to air! I'M AN ORIGINAL OWNER. MY DW CREW MUST HAVE BEEN 3 SHEETS IN THE WIND WHEN THEY GOT TO MY HOUSE! This kind of shoddy work could give drywallers a bad name, in 1984! Anyway, I'm fixing my house to sell, and being the ultimate DIY'er, trying to save on labor and do the job RIGHT!... WAYNE

Thanks for the response, Paul. The video you referenced is the one that I learned to texture knockdown. Thank you for that. My first try at texturing I used your method of skip trowel, with the sand in my All Purpose, but it didnt match. That's when I went to this video. On my first two ceiling repairs - water damage & hallway crack (30" across 2 outside corners), both took 3 tries, the 3rd being a charm on texturing. I'm just happy the All Purpose had not set up yet. My 3rd repair was in a bay window sill (water damage - soft DW), not giving me much room to work because of 4x and inside & outside corner beads, but my texturing with Lowe's coarse texturing sponge and a blue steel 8" knife for knockdown worked 1st time. I'm glad you recommended to get globs of mud in the sponge holes. That's a charm! Anyway, thanks for personalizing my inputs with your response. Much appreciated! By the way, the huge repair I'm on now, as described in my 1st comment - uneven joists, hanging DW joints, sistering joists, etc, is a real nightmare, but I'm always up for a good challenge. I'm a retired Aerospace EE, so I'm into troubleshooting and fixing root causes/corrective actions. I do nothing halfway. I love this stuff! Thanks again Paul. I figured out why my problems aren't addressed on the internet - it would be bad publicity to air bandaiding crumbled drywall joints when they should be replaced. I'd like to know if there's a way to post pictures in our comments, so you could SEE my DW problems that mostly are not addressed... Wayne

Hey Paul. I have another question: how do you know when to place your furring strips parallel or perpendicular to the butt joint? My case - both hanging. On one of your videos, with the sagging ceiling, you placed the furring strips perpindicular to the seam. What's a good rule of thumb? On my sagging ceiling/tape joint failure, I placed mine parallel. My joists are on 24" centers and i used a true 4"×1" furring strip. It certainly pulled up the ceiling. Between joists immediately after outside corner wall on ceiling, I ran it parallel. Between the 2nd span, I used both perpindicular & parallel. On the 3rd span, I attached a sister 2x4 to joist. More to come on 3rd section- still a work in progress.

Hello again, Paul. I am working on my 2nd ceiling problem, which is a hallway crack across 2 outside corner walls, where hallway opens up to opposing bedroom doorways and a washroom. The crack initially looked like a paint crack, but as I sanded it down (the only way to remove the cured mud), the crack went all the way to the drywall. After many attempts to use my stud finder, and failing to properly sink my drywall screws (6×1-1/4"L AND 7x2"L screws), I went into the attic AGAIN to assess the area. I found a very busy section of ceiling, from above. There is an electrical cable running to the BR & to the washroom light/fan assy, 3 ea. 2"x4" rafters, spaced 1" & 3-1/2" apart, overlapping drywall, 1"×4" furring strips running opposite to rafters, and a central A/C duct, about 6" diameter, all running through that 36" wide hallway ceiling space. My stud finder told me I had density for a 9" swathe of material above. It would have paid dividends to have a higher end stud finder that ID'd those sources! Anyway, I have a 12" 1/8" dia drill bit, so while in attic, I drilled through on both sides of each 2x4 to guide me from below. WHAT A MESS! All this just to fasten down both sides of the crack. Anyone else attempting this job would have hired you and flown you to SoCal to fix this chaos! Thanks again for your videos! I could not have done this without them! Wish me luck. I'm still saving the best for last on my ceiling repairs. The first was a water damaged area, which looks good now, thanks to you. This current problem is a hairline crack spanning the 36" wide hallway. The last will be a 5-ft crack across a 4-ft wide sheet running onto the adjacent 1-ft sheet, across a vaulted ceiling; and an 8-ft crack perpendicular to the 4-ft crack, on the same sheet where the 4-ft crack is. The first 2 repairs are my training for the "BIG" problem, saving scaffolding work till the end. Thanks again, Paul. Wayne
@waynehuffer29005 жыл бұрын
Addendum: the location where the A/C duct crosses my ceiling fix, in the attic, THE 2×4 rafter is not continuous across the 36" hallway! There are more triangular trusses running to roof on that one rafter. I was only able to fasten drywall for 2/3 of the hallway on the one side of crack; then I couldn't sink a screw properly for remaining 1/3, to save my life! I spaced my screws every inch for +/- 2 inches! Even used 2" screws. A 10" x 36" section of that ceiling looks poka'dotted. Thank goodness hot mud/drywall is forgiving.

If you life in a cold climate, do not repair your ceiling like this. The insulation was pushed away and there is no vapor barrier. In cold weather that section of the ceiling will be ice cold and the humidity from the warm air in the room will condense (just like a cold beverage glass on a warm day) and wet the tape and mud. Even if the tape doesn't let go, black mold is almost a certainty. The proper way would be to go up in the attic and make sure the insulation is in place. It's no fun going in the attic, but neither is it to do all that work only to have to do it again.

Cement board mesh tape is usually grey and thicker than fiberglass mesh tape for drywall. Cement board tape is designed to be resistant to degrading from the thinset. Mesh tape for drywall should never be used for taping seams on cement board or hardibacker.

Most all of the long seams are like this in my garage ( one side of the tape coming loose ) , I discovered today the sheetrock does NOT butt up to each other on a rafter . If I re tape and float these will them crack again ? If so should I caulk the crack first then tape and float ? Would that work to stop the tape from cracking or do you have a better idea ? Oh yes , last year I used some mud under the loose side of the tape but after I painted over it repairs it came loose again .

Nah, it won’t crack again I’ve been doing these types repairs for years with no callbacks. The furring strip does stabilize the two sides of the ceiling crack enough to prevent it from cracking again. A lot of times the reason repair cracks using fiberglass mesh tape cracks is because people don’t use of setting type compound in conjunction with fiberglass mesh tape as recommended by the manufactures. -Paul

OK, so just a very general question here : on ceiling cracks is it ALWAYS necessary to cut into the material and use a furring strip & screws - or in what situations do you NOT NEED to do that (meaning ONLY scrape the crack area, apply tape + compound x 2-3 coats, let dry, then sand / primer / paint)...Just curious how you make that decision upon inspection...Thanks a lot!

I have a ceiling in a bedroom that has new drywall on ceiling and was textured but not primed or painted yet. I had a slight roof leek and drip inside the ceiling and it made the drywall tape lift slightly and texture crack along the seam. About a 3 foot crack. Should I remove the old tape in that section or tape over it and what tape do you recommend for that application. Fibafuse, mesh, or paper? I watched your video where you used the banjo and pulled off the old tape but I don't have a sagging finish or peeling or anything near that amount of damage. Just a newly topped unpainted seem that exposed itself after water ran down it from the inside. Thanks again for your time! I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. I share them with my father, father inlaw, and a few friends.

That's awesome BrokenRRT. Thank you! As far as the ceiling repair you need to do. I would remove the bad tape. Maybe even put a couple screws in if the seams felt loose. I'm really liking the FibaFuse drywall tape. You can use regular mud or fast setting mud with it. With the fiberglass mesh tape you should only use a hot mud. I think either tape will work for your tape joint repair. I do believe the fiberglass mesh is easier to keep the flattest because it is adhered right to the drywall and seam. The Fibafuse has to be embedded in the mud so there's more of a chance of the tape floating or being left to high in the mud bed. Hope that helps, -Paul

i would have stuck my dry wall knife in the crack all the way to the handle .then go in attic clear insullation out and set 2x4 actually i use 1x4 with a shot of caulking then just screw both sides of crack job done with minimal patching and piecing just cleaner neater fix no dry wall to cut and patch less screwes just my way of making minumum patching oh the knife blade is so you know where problem lies easy to find

Same method you use for cracks in drywall with counter sinking screws. Horrible looking glossy paint on that ceiling.
@PaulPeck6 жыл бұрын
That’s not paint. It’s joint compound from skim coating over that popcorn ceiling...

Brilliant!

first problem you used fiber tape ..
@PaulPeck6 жыл бұрын
Fiber tape works just fine if you use a setting type joint compound on the first coat. That's really what most everyone's problem is when they say they hate fiber tape...👍

Would of just cut the crackout a fibafuse
@muhammadafghanzada57386 жыл бұрын
You 15 inches but when screw it look like about 30 inches. The way holding the screw no way you would be able to screw down wood. Some thing fishy here.

I would of just fiba fuse that crack with 5 min

You got WAY too much faith in a 1X4! I have serious doubts that a 1X4 would hold that many screws without obliterating the 1X4. Best of luck with that!

All those screws! Overkill
@PaulPeck6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily in this situation. Since it was a step through the drywall was compromised and is buckled down. I put the screws in to get the surface as flat as possible by bringing the step through damage drywall flush to the furring strip. So overkill is an overstatement.👍🏻 I hope this helps. -Paul

Just made more work
@PaulPeck6 жыл бұрын
Not really Austin. After that crack is repaired. I am skim coating over this old-school painted popcorn ceiling and then applying a skip trowel texture priming and painting. So not really making more work just creating a beautiful brand new ceiling! -Paul

800 screws clueless
@PaulPeck3 жыл бұрын
Nah, I just know how to fix a crack. First thing I did too minimize any movement is to reattach the existing drywall to a framing member above the ceiling. That’s why there is more screws. Because the step through did more damage than just the crack... 👍🏻

Paul,if you have a long crack, is it necessary to back the full crack?
