Are all popcorn ceilings toxic & contain asbestos? If so how do you repair the pealing/crumbling? Do you need to wear a respirator goggles etc.?

Depends on the year it was done. Pre 1980s have it checked.

It pulls away easily because it got wet and it’s integrity was compromised not because it was not primed. I have never seen a preprimed popcorn.
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 4 жыл бұрын
Would you not agree that it would not pull away if it had been primed underneath? In other words, if the sheet rock were sealed, do you think that popcorn would have pulled away so easily?
@samuelfloyd5072
@samuelfloyd5072 4 жыл бұрын
I personally think that it might not be a good idea to make it stick the best possible, in as much as most people are getting rid of popcorn. I don’t know if it’s better but I can certainly say if there is a watermark you must pre prime so the popcorn is not discolored.

If it were primed it would not pull away. The primer creates a surface for paint or texture to bind to.

What kind of primer do you use? I see many videos showing people putting an all purpose joint compound down and then the textured ceiling material? Is this joint compound considered a primer? Could I use a flat ceiling paint that contains paint and primer as my main primer?
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 4 жыл бұрын
I love your question. Technically speaking, you do not need a primer but, take a look what happens when you don’t use one. The compound in the texture it doesn’t stick, does it? The proof is in the video. If it were my property, I would use a primer and yes, you are correct, your ceiling paint will suffice

@@spencercolgan Thanks for the quick reply! I have a very small area of popcorn that fell off from water damage. I want to scrape off the lose area(smaller than 1 sq foot), and put the same ceiling paint that has primer in it down. Then when its dry I will put some all purpose joint compound down in 2 or 3 coats, and then put the textured popcorn material down & paint with this same paint. I am debating to use the homax aerosol popcorn solution since its a small area or should I buy one of those crow feet brushes to match up the joint compound to the rest of the ceiling before painting it?

B Charron I have to tell you the honest truth. If you’ve never done this before, and if you really wanted to look nice… Scrape it all off and re-popcorn your ceiling but if you don’t want to do that, start in the middle of your repair and work to about 1 1/2 feet outside of the repair area just beyond the fixed… And do what’s called feathering… It’s not that easy to do so if you have a little finesse in your bones, I think you could do it
@charronfamilyconnect
@charronfamilyconnect 4 жыл бұрын
When you say feathering, do you mean to use one of those crows feet texture brushes? I guess you are no fan of the Homax Texture ceiling spray? Thanks!

B Charron I mean go from thick to thin in a progressively thinning application stroke.

The repair part was fine. The complaining about how the original installer didn't prime was silly. I've witnessed dozens of popcorn ceiling removals, (I flip houses, but have a knockdown guy do the ceilings) and I have never seen one that was primed.
@_Queeni

I have peeled popcorn ceilings from my own and flipped homes and retextured with knockdown , And have never seen primer or traces of and primer under the texture and all were built in the early 1970's which show how long the texture lasted.

I didn't finish the video. You spent too much time on why and how and repeated it because you felt it needed emphasis. KZbin can be replayed easily. You don't have to repeat or emphasize anything. Just want basics on what I need to do. Never got that with you. And, you don't need a part II... A for effort. But too time consuming without getting answers I need to do it.

@@osrsfonzie1897 actually, very very few popcorn ceilings have asbestos. Popcorn is from the 80s and 90s, maybe late 70s. Asbestos was pretty much gone by then.

being that you want to do things right, I am sure you hired an independent third party to test for the presence of asbestos? That is doing it right. where is the containment? If you did under the "best practices" that would be the right thing to mention. It is really simple just like with dealing with a leak from above, dry out (de-humidify) cut away to solid material, quick bonding agent (concrete variant works fine) feather over a little, apply texture (that example USG coarse is perfect. knife apply and sponge to match. Cheap labor, union type mentality, socialist rants are not needed. You should do house flipping, with the right purchase price there is meat on the bone still. (and it is pure capitalism--still) lol

The industry standard practice was never to prime sheetrock before spraying simulated acoustic aka popcorn.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

My dad and I were spraying this stuff in the 70s, and you are correct. We never ever sprayed over primer, although there were some times we rolled drywall mud on as a white wash just so none of the paper ever showed through since they weren’t painting them. The acoustical ceiling texture will stick to the drywall paper just fine.
