Thank-you for this video, especially 12:39 how to reassemble the external contacting apparatus. My family's tester was reading about one third too low, it turned out we had reassembled the unit so the back of the thumb ground was not connecting to the spring/ground on the circuit. Much better now but still 0.5kV lower than the brand new unit.

Thanks for posting this video. I’ve had my Gallagher SmartFix for 22 years and never changed the battery. However, my ground wire is breaking. I have it taped up and it still works. I get a much higher voltage reading when I use the ground wire. If I don’t use it I’m not as confident about the result due to not having history to put the reading into context. Hi Allan, if you put your thumb of the hand your holding the tester in on that metal piece in the bottom corner, it will use your body as the ground when your testing the fence. If you bend down to a knee or set your hand on the ground while putting your thumb on the metal piece in the corner, you'll get a little bit better reading as well doing this. That tester has a metal plate inside the back case tied to ground internally, so it'll use your body as ground through induction.

That's the good thing on the Gallagher testers vs everybody else's that's out there. They're repairable even if it was more than a battery reset, all the other ones are throwaway.

I’m trying to find a replacement voltage probe and the whole metal plate part that you touch the wire to. Can you help me source one….cant seem to find one anywhere. Cheers

Half the time you don't have to use the button. I guess it's for getting into tight spots around an insulator or something.
