My 2000 Porsche Boxster S (986) recently started making a metallic screeching noise on cold starts. Fortunately this startup noise can be fixed for free. All you have to do is take the starter motor apart and rebuild it.

Great to see someone who actually fixes parts these days rather than just replaces them. Thanks! I'll be doing this repair on Saturday. I've heard Porsche dealers charge between $900 and $1400 to replace a starter motor!

Exactly! I think many good parts are tossed out just because people don't realize they can be repaired! ...and since it costs nothing and only takes a couple of hours, the savings are huge!

And when they buy a replacement and hand in their core, they don't often realize that they are getting someone else's core that has been repaired.

I ended up taking it apart however I did not remove the 3 solenoid screws and solenoid cover. I cleaned out the planetary gears etc, and then I repeatedly rinsed the inside of the solenoid housing with about 2 cups of WD-40 by filling it, rotating it, and letting the solenoid housing drain. All sorts of black carbon looking material and particulate came out eventually making the solenoid action smooth. Greased the planetary gears and put it back together. I was able to remove the starter by only having to remove the rear intake plenum saving a little bit of time as the majority of time on the job was removing and reinstalling the starter. Its been back in the car for a month and working perfectly. You saved me a bundle. Now let me know your easy way to double the horsepower. ;)
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear it wet smoothly. I think it's a great idea to use WD-40 to clean out the old grease. As for doubling the horsepower, it's quite simple. Just replace the engine, transmission and ECU. Easy! ;)

Hearing the noise your starter made was valuable to me. I have filed that sound away in my mental archives. Also, from experience with American cars, I was surprised to see you lubricate the starter instead of tossing it. Well done, makes sense! Thanks, Ben!

Excellent! It's a truly terrifying noise when you first hear it, but really not a big deal. Since the rebuilt starters are over $200 and the new Porsche starters are... stupidly expensive, this was a great (free) way to keep the starter quiet and happy.

Great video! Just pulled mine apart today, disassembled and lubed tonight and will reinstall tomorrow. I found this video about 4 months ago and it put me at ease over what the problem was. Sounds ATROCIOUS when it starts happening! Glad it's just the starter. Nothing is ever cheap on a Porsche, but I'll take this fix for FREE!!!

For those thinking about attempting this, the torx screws that hold the solenoid on are M5x0.8x35. You will almost certainly have to drill them out like Burner (and I) did, since they're apparently made out of brie and paper maché. They're not really special, but they're an unusual size, so normal parts stores don't have them, but I was able to find suitable replacements on Amazon. It's probably best to plan ahead, and have them before you start, so the car doesn't have to be taken apart for days.

On Denso starter the noise is produced by planetary gear rattle rather then sticking solenoid or jammed one way clutch. This why many people were able to get rid of noise by lubrication planetary gear. The proper way of repair is to replace a bronze bushing for the armature in the center of the planetary carrier in addition to greasing of the gears. However a grease alone can help as well

I did that twice, every other 10 months. This fix lasts as long as the grease lubricates the little electromotor shaft. What you need to do is change the nut or muff in which the shaft rotates. It becomes loose overtime and develops a play of the shaft , letting dirt enter between the shaft and the nut into which it spins. The grease method lasts a short while.

Great video man! I have an '04 Mazda 6 V6 with a 5-speed manual transmission. I replaced the starter over a decade ago because of this same noise. The dealer told me the part had a new number as they tweaked the design to prevent this noise for manual transmission models as the clutch dust was exacerbating the issue. Well... The noise came back in just 2 years but it was beyond the part warranty. I think the part I got (from my Mazda dealership!) may have had the updated model number on the box but was built with original components. Crazy. Ever since then I've had to pull my starter out every couple years to clean and lubricate the Bendix gear. It's a huge pain in the ass task. Have to do it again now... And cold weather makes it worse.

Business end of the video starts at 5:45. Suggest using impact hammer/bits or air to remove the solenoid screws. Done. Reused. Solenoid machined too tight. Needs a few thousands machining. Old grease was dried out. Let's see how long the new grease lasts. Surprised that after nearly 2 decades of grinding the pinion gear looked in pretty good shape. Quiet now, let's see how long it lasts. You made this video two years ago. How long has the Mobil1 grease lasted without issues? Have you had to redo the job? Hats off to you! Great video.
@bernardmauge8613
@bernardmauge8613 Жыл бұрын
Never try to remove the solenoid screws by turning them. Always use an impact driver to protect the head. The problem is corrosion around the holes or the threads. By forcing the head to turn while the screw is frozen, you are destroying the torxs groove. This was designed on purpose so you do not take it apart. There is nothing wrong with the screws, only the user. Thanks for the video I enjoyed it.

Thanks Ben for your preparation and detail regarding screw sizes etc. Although I remembers that greasing the solenoid is a no-no. Wish you went a little further and replaced the brushes also and it is always. It is always interesting to know the mileage age and whether one could source it from the standard VW or Audi parts, because the dealers tries to keep this secret. Thumps up and keep on posting your videos.

As a follow up, I removed the starter and had it rebuilt (not mechanically inclined or trust myself enough to put it back together properly) which was a much cheaper alternative to new and I think a better way to go (OEM so no concerns of fit) and have reinstalled it since and starts up perfectly- without the screeching noise! Thanks again!!

Thank you for the accurate diagnosis. My solenoid was not sticking as badly as yours, but just cleaning the plunger sorted it out. Had just replaced brushes, and should have sorted solenoid at same time. Noise was similar to clutch release bearing, but I had just replaced that. Should the noise come back, I will replace the solenoid, Total job 1 hour.

Unrelated I pulled my engine mount yesterday and discovered that whoever replaced it last time did not push it all the way in and only put one spacer on to compensate. So I pushed the old one out the rubber was almost completely torn around the perimeter, I used the old mount outer ring to push in the new one. I just don't understand how someone could do an incomplete job like that. My clue that something was wrong was when I was getting it in a corner and shifted I felt a little wiggle. I love working on my car!!

My thought is some areas should not be greased since heat will coak it. That is what jammed it up in the first place. The sliding steel shaft in the solenoid magnet coil is a loose fit. Maybe a film of grease for anti rust followed by a wipe off with a cotton cloth would be better. Those oilite bearings get a drop of thin oil and a wipe off. They have their own lubricant thru out the bearing material.

Mine did the same thing back in 2014 and I think the car had around 110k miles on it. I have a Tiptronic trans and to get the starter out I had to remover the oil filler tube, that's no fun. I read up on re-lubing the starter, but I said the heck with that and just got a new starter. I figure if the new starter last as long as the original stater, 11 years and 110k miles, the engine may go before it starts doing the squeal again. I tried giving the used starter away on the forums, just asked for the shipping cost be covered and nobody took me up on the offer. Finally tossed it last month.

What's funny (well not really) was my starter didn't squeal on cold start ups. It had a mind of it's own and of course liked to do while I was at the gas station. Not many Porsches around where I live so people always had their eyes on it and I would start it up and squeeeeal. Was so embarrassing, I just wanted it fixed with no worries of how long the re-lube would last.

No one wanted the starter out of fear, and because a good 95% of Porsche owners I'd be willing to bet, don't work on their own cars. Wether a 944, boxster or a 911. Mine started doing that at 61k miles and after watching this I would of taken your used one for free, in a heart beat !

Are you going to be doing a video on water drain tubes, mine is leaking and I pulled the wet carpet out on the passenger floor and I discovered some bubbling of the paint I sanded the rust and put some stop rust on it. But you can find diagrams of the tubes but no instructions on how to access. I have blown air through them, used suction but I suspect that I have a dislocated tube so I'm going to be taking out wheel well covers and exploring. Thanks!!
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
Funny you should mention it... I actually already shot some video on the subject (just haven't put it together). If you haven't already, you can try pouring small amounts of water down each drain tube and checking to see 1) if it drains out under the car and 2) if the carpet is wet. That might save you some time by helping to pinpoint which tube. It's even possible someone just spilled something (ok, it's unlikely, but worth checking before you go through the work of tracing things down).
@wildbillcarroll
@wildbillcarroll 7 жыл бұрын
No spills it's behind the passenger seat a very common place for leaks, yes I put water in the main catch and I saw water go out in front of the right rear wheel, is there another tube in that area? You have the right rear drain inside the storage for top area and in the top rail area the slot for hard cover if you know what I mean. Thanks!!
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, yeah, definitely sounds like a problem with the drain. I think I know what you mean. There are a total of 4 drain holes on the back (2 on each side). It sounds like you have checked both (one in storage area and one in the rail), right? If it's still leaking into the passenger area, well, it sounds like you'll have to go fishing :/

Hi Ben. Excellent video. Going to try this myself. The only thing I'm concerned about is getting it in and out due to the location of that screw. When I'm looking at it from inside (from the front) is it easy to identify from that location ? Thanks !!
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
It's pretty hard to see from the front, but you can see it from the top of the engine. I threaded the socket in through the front to the approximate location, then moved around to the top of the engine to ensure it was on right.

How does the shaft assembly come off? There’s a solid flange on the tooth drive side so it doesn’t just back off

Never mind I saw in the closeup that yours did not have the part. Its a round piece of metal which is pressed under the teeth and you have to pry it off. I don’t know yet if it goes back

That is the exact sound that My 2003 Boxter S makes! I've been racking my brain to find out what it was. I thought it was the solenoid, but now I see it's just - exactly what you described with the two different size gears (and ir not returning to its original state) I am going to try and take the starter out and apart (like you showed). I've never worked on the Boxter (but have worked on other American cars) do you think it will be easy enough for someone like me to do the work? (I've changed water pumps, thermostats, alternators, windshield wiper motors and things like that)
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah, from what you've described, I think you'd be able to manage it. The mid-engine layout takes a little getting use to, but being able to access the front of the engine from behind the seats actually makes some jobs a little easier!

Belt tensioner putting enough pressure on the belt for it to be tight enough? Bad/Weak spring loaded tensioner or a loose mechanical type tensioner is not tight enough to put proper tension on the belt which can/will cause a squeak on startup when the belt is still cold and slips. Also verify ALL other pulleys are straight, bearings tight, and spin smoothly with the belt removed...

hey, I got a problem on my 2001 Porsche Boxter its 2001 leaking antifreeze near the near the back right passenger wheel, do you know what could be the problem?
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
Yes! I think it's pretty likely to be one of these two things: 1) the cap on the coolant tank is faulty. They're designed to vent if the pressure is too high. When they fail, they leak at much lower temps / pressures than they should 2) The plastic expansion tank is cracked. Since they're plastic, they grow brittle after many years and fail. Both these problems will be worse when the car is hot / running, but if the car is leaking coolant when it's just sitting there cold, it's probably the tank. I would definitely start by checking these 2 things... if that isn't the problem there are a few other possibilities: leaking hoses (relatively uncommon) or the water pump (common but generally a bit forward of the rear wheel. Start with the cap / tank. Look for crusty white residue... that's dried coolant usually leftover from a leak.

Hi Ben - My 2002 is doing the same thing so I'm going to follow your lead and perform this fix. For planning purposes, I'd like to purchase the two screws you ended up drilling out prior to starting the work. Can you provide the size info for those two screws? And thanks so much for your informative videos. I think I've watched all of them prior to even purchasing my 986. Looking forward to more inthe future. Joe

Hi Joe! I'm glad I could help. It's not a bad idea to prepare for the possibility of having to drill those screws out. I know I used flat head M5 machine screws, but I never wrote down the exact length. I think they were 20 or 25mm in length.

Love your videos, very helpful. For future reference: drilled off screw heads, turned out to be a real pain in the ass! Next time I would first give those screw extractors a try. Screws are M5/30mm.

@@vitcas Flat head, Phillips, Hex head, Torx? Thanks so much as I too want to have them on hand before I dive in. Where dod you source them? Stainless steel? Thanks in advance.
@vitcas
@vitcas 5 жыл бұрын
@@alexcassinelli6651Torx. Almost any head would do the trick, though, since there's plenty of room, just stay away from countersunk. Be aware they are 3 bolts, not 2 as mentioned in the original question. Yeap, stainless steel, easy to find: got them literally at the first hardware store down the road. On a different matter: just before that, you will need a 6.5mm socket wrench, which proved to be way harder to find; ended up using a 7mm wrench which eventually did the job.

Hello Burner's Cars and everyone, i use the account of my wife. First of all let me say that the video is very interessting. I have the same problem with a Bosch starter 020 911 023 F in my Golf MK4. A few days ago I removed the starter and tried to unscrew the torx screws. Unfortunately without success. The screws are now round turned. I tried to drill out one screw head, but I'm not sure. Can someone explain to me briefly how that works. The countersunk screws should be Torx M5 with a length of 35 mm. The idea should be to drill out the screw heads and so to remove the magnetic switch with the rest of the screws, or not? How was removing the screws from the thread. And how is to do that? Best regards and thank you very much.
