Great video, I spray painted a popcorn ceiling only to have the popcorn start falling off the ceiling , scraped it back but the areas are 3x3 in 3 sections, nightmare , and now losing money on what was supposed to be fast and easy job. This will be my last paint job on a popcorn ceiling. You just open yourself up for problems. Best thing to do is remove the popcorn, and skim coat the ceiling with joint compound, more work, more money and very messy but worth it. Popcorn is no fun unless it’s at the movies.
@homemend3 жыл бұрын
Wow that’s crazy Scott. There were a couple methods I used one is obviously the spray but if that was taking the popcorn down that sound like a mess. The other option I use is a foam roller cover and it has slits in it all threw out so it can get into the crevices in the details of the popcorn ceiling. They can be a bear. I’ve had one where we had to rehang the entire ceiling just to make it look nice, A great use of quarter inch drywall, you can just go right over top. Thank you for sharing Scott
@New-Breed-Drywall-And-Paint2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure he is talking about the popcorn texture falling off a little while after he painted it with a airless . Reason for that was you didn’t seal the popcorn before you painted it . A latex paint is water base ..... how do you remove popcorn ? With water !! The latex paint acted as water and loosened up the bond it had with the drywall and a little bit after you sprayed the ceiling and cleaned up your airless , he walked back into the room to pull the plastic and popcorn was just hanging down from the ceiling ....so what’s the trick to make sure it don’t happen again you ask !!! Well their are a few. 1.) pray and ask god to please let the paint dry before it soaks so deep that the texture losses it bond . you typically will be safe painting them but id say 3 out of every 10 will give you that result 2.) prime before the popcorn is applied or add primer to the popcorn before you apply it to the drywall . Yes that means putting primer into your mixing bucket and then adding your popcorn powder mix to it and whipping it up and shooting like that or you can mix it in your paint color instead of the primer and knock it out like that but i recommend using primer for a good bond then spraying with a airless . Or 3) don’t spray it so heavy when painting . Move the gun faster but constantly if your not sure if it’s sealed or was primed before or while being applied . Or 4,) you can seal it before you paint with your pure white or behr ultra pure white that you used the first time . Was I right about the color ? Hope this helped ..... check out my one video on my page I plan on adding more . And to the OP , nice video brother . Keep pushing that mud !

For better results you should put a white primer coat underneath. Helps the 'popcorn' materials stick (its doesn't stick that well to joint compound or bare wallboard), and its white so it doesn't take as much texture material to cover the gray-colored wallboard. As others mention, it doesn't always work so its best used in inconspicuous areas (above the door like he did is a good place to do it).

Great vid! We have popcorn ceiling in the master bath that has started to fall off in 3 cantaloupe sized spots over the shower. Best fix at this point?
@homemend3 жыл бұрын
Hey sky. I’m guessing that would depend on how easily it’s coming off. If it was in the bathroom chances are it’s been taking moisture for years and may come off easy. If it’s a small section or maybe even one cantaloupes size section I would try to patch it but if it’s coming off easy and in other places I would scrape it down, skim coat and paint it. There is a video :-) I hope this helps

Hi Dustin...after you do the repair but before you paint it, do you normally prime the repaired area first or just paint it?

skh1825 Hey hey! I will typically use like a stain blocker something like kilz or cover up. It just takes it back to the white ceiling tone and prevents any bleedthrough if it was a previous stain from a leak. You can also use kills to kind of blend the ceiling after the popcorn repair has dried if it’s noticeably different. I hope this helps and thank you So much for commenting.

Question for you.. say the ceiling isn’t level all the way across... when you put the drywall patch into place, one side is flush with the ceiling, and it lines up nicely along the sides, but the opposite end is about 1/4 of an inch lower than the existing ceiling(the patch is screwed into the joists so it cannot move up nay higher at that end), what would you do?

Oh and it also has the fabulous popcorn crap as well....

hi beth.. you can use that 5 minute mud to fill the gap a little at a time until its smooth enough to coat with popcorn.. if its a large gap, you may need to secure a strip of drywall to make it right.. i hope this helps!

My ceiling in my rental had water damage. They want to popcorn the area, but in my completely furnished with brand new furniture and tons of plants apt!! Is that advisable to do with a furnished room? I have the option to opt-out of the popcorn and just touch up the paint. I am afraid they could damage my new furniture and art!
@homemend3 жыл бұрын
Hey Doreen depending on how big the damage is I’m guessing. You don’t want your rental property to look bad and it’s easy to do with the popcorn ceiling.I would protect everything with plastic sheeting and then repair as needed. I hope this helps
@doreengayer57233 жыл бұрын
@@homemend I do have the option to opt out and just paint it. I might do only the painting as it isn't that thickly textured and they can spray the popcorn when I move out. It is a small area. I just don't trust anyone with my new stuff. It was damage from another tenants floor above me. My handyman can touch it up with paint & primer. Home Mender Inc we only have homax cans here.. I find the knockdown can is crappy .Hopefully popcorn works better .If not im doing it with a knife and sponge. Too small to bring in a hopper.

Ocanadakiter hi ocana. Homax is perfect! There's also a link in the description if you need it! You can do it!

Instead of using your fingers - Smoothing the patch repair area edges is easy with a standard damp (not wet) soft bristle paint brush. It's called feathering the edges.

Just to confirm the mud needs to be completely dry before applying a second coat? 24 hours?
@homemend4 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve I used five minute mud and put a fan on it so it should dry pretty quickly. If you’re using the green or blue top bucket premixed, you may have to wait a little while. It will dry bright white and you’ll know it’s dry
