How to Repair a Rotted Window Frame - fix window from inside

A rotted window frame was the repair project at hand. In this video we tackled the repair from inside the house and without having to remove the window.

The repair required cutting away the rotted portion of the window sash and replacing the rotted wood with cedar boards cut to size on a portable table saw. Any gaps were filled in with foam or wood putty depending on where the void was. Then, after snding the wood putty smooth, the window was ready to be primed and painted.

In this video, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich show you how to repair a rotted window frame with very basic tools.
Repairing a rotted window frame can save hundreds of dollars and can be accomplished with just a few simple tools. Knowing how to fix a window frame can lessen the complications that can result from having to replace a window, to say nothing of the costs associated with window replacement. The window in this video is an aluminum clad wood window. This window frame repair was due to water damage and wood decay and wood dry rot.
To repair the window, the aluminum frame was detached from the rotted wood. Then a replacement piece of wood was cut and glued in place. Fixing a window with dry rot or water damage can add years to the life of the window as well as eliminate the need to throw the window in a landfill.
The tools needed to fix the window frame can be as simple as a cross cut saw, a back cut saw, a chisel, hammer and a tape measure.
A table saw, router, or multi-tool could greatly speed up the repair.

Very nice job, my only `advice to others planning on doing a similar repair is that you have an opportunity to prime all the wood before installation and over and over again I see these videos repairing windows, doors, etc. and bare wood is installed. It is the easiest task involved in all the steps and it is commonly overlooked. Sealing the wood will add an important layer of protection and add years to the repair and lesson the chance of another failure.

Hey nc…, I prefer to fill any gap - much better insulator. It’s worth paying the $10 for a can of window/ door spray foam. The actual new wood always gets paint to protect from moisture. Hope that helps.

I would like to know how you fixed the outside of the window. It looks waterproofed for the inside, but will water still pool in the window sill on the outside? How did you finish the project on the outside? Thank you!

Hey @droberts7859, The window is aluminum clad and fixed. The repair went all the way to the exterior aluminum. This is superficial, how do you replace the wood beneath the window and even the plywood under the window where the nasties gather.

Hey eli…, The rough framing around the window is typically 2x4’s or 2x6’s. On the exterior wall there would be plywood up to the edges of the window. To get to that plywood you would have to remove siding . It’s a bigger job, but if the plywood is rotted, it’s good to replace. Thx for watching!
