Honestly I would've cut that entire part out and put in a piece of wood instead of trying to build up damaged MDF with Bondo.

Bondo also makes a spot filler, it would be for very tiny imperfections or last coat in a case like this. it’s red, dries fast sands amazing. I buy it on Amazon comes in a tube , no hardener.

The glazing puddy- I find it dries a bit too hard for my liking, I prefer the softer easier to work with wood filler. But if you’re looking for absolute perfection I’d lean glazing puddy.

@joytotheworld910927 күн бұрын
MDF is killed by moisture. Your best bet is probably cutting all the ruined stuff away and getting to soild stock, then slap in some real wood that has less annoying properties. Filling the gap.
@sarinhighwind28 күн бұрын
Best tip I can give here is getting your mix with the hardener right can help with shaping. to much hardner sets it really quick which reduces your shaping time. If you get your mix right on it, you'll have ample time when it half sets to shape and carve away really high edges and get basic shapes with ease using chisels or other tools. Then in another 10 or so minutes after that you can start sanding and then applying more if necessary. It takes a bit of experience to get the mix level correct, but knowing that to much reduces working time usually helps people out. I had a few mix and can't spread cause I used to much hardener experiences.
@blonko8626 күн бұрын
My concern would be that water or moisture would just wick up underneath the end of the jam where no sealer was applied. Nice concept, but in my experience it may be just as easy and efficient in the long run just to replace the section with wood or pvc.

@rogerhodges765628 күн бұрын
You still didn't remove enough decomposed MDF and then you put a hard shell over fluff. When you encounter this situation, the best thing to do is remove the softest material, like you did. Consolidate the soft material with cyanoacrylate epoxy like "Hot Stuff." by drilling some 1/8" holes into the remaining soft material., injecting a little epoxy and the activating it. This will turn your fluff into rock hard material. Then finish your Bondo repair.
@tchevrier28 күн бұрын

@mynameIan29 күн бұрын
That’s is indeed Binz. Full organic volatiles. It’s the only solution for sealing a priming that people in the know use. It was the classic go to for mould and fire damage. Instead of proper remediation, just encapsulate the problem with Binz. Leave it for the next generation.
@stevebabiak699727 күн бұрын
@@mynameIan - I suspect that was damage due to pet urine (baseboards didn’t seem damaged, so a flood seems unlikely). If that was pet urine, sealing with an oil based product is a must if the material isn’t being removed completely.

I love the statement "trying to get down to some solid wood"-call me a critic if you want, but a more accurate statement might be "trying to get down to solid sawdust and glue." An autobody file is excellent for shaping the Bondo.
@Inkling77728 күн бұрын
50-50 epoxies are easier to mix. They make measuring simpler. Just make the two piles about the same size. And if the two are different colors, mixing is also easier. Mix until the color is uniform.
@rogerhodges765628 күн бұрын
Cyanoacrylate epoxy is a fast setting, hard drying , two component super glue. is available in a variety of consistencies. Thin epoxies flow by capillary action to fill all of the voids between damaged fiber products or rotted wood. It will consolidate anything that it can penetrate. Hot Stuff is a brand name. Liquid Wood is a product that would also work to solidify wat remains before making a repair.

"solid wood" then shows MDF. The biggest mistake is using that toxic thick cardboard crap that is MDF. If you just used proper wood and painted the entire piece on all sides, to seal it, before attaching it to the rest of the door frame, you wouldn't have a problem with water soaking into it.
