Mom dropped her remote in the loo (clean water!) and after drying it up it still was not working. Your video helped me open remote up (no screws) and clean it perfectly (still wet and gummy) and made it to work like a charm! THANK YOU!!!

I used the pencil scribbling method for a 20year old remote, and it worked well. Mate most of ecologicaltime videos are really helpful. Especially for people that would love to repair old electronics instead of buying the latest tech every few months. Keep up the good work. Cheers \m/

Thanks mate. I've tried it with alcohol, than with electric de-oxidizer, but without getting consistent button response. Adding the graphite finally did the trick. 👍👍👍

Will see. For now works perfectly. I've picked it up from a dumpster anyway. I've bought a Samsung TV with those stupid new remote, where you are supposed to talk to the remote in order to quickly change channels. Utter BS! I eneded up constantly carrying the kitchen remote (classic Samsung) back and forth.

Thank you for making this video, it’s the best one on how to repair remote controls not working properly. Well explained!. I have the same problem with a mates remote control, I’ve popped it open and cleaned the sticky mess on the board and the rubber pad, 3 buttons still not working, so I will try the pencil trick you demonstrated. Many thanks again. 😊

This helped. I ended up having to scrape a bit off of the pad on the circuit board to get the power button to work (all others were fine). It's an old RCA remote and it's set up differently.

I grabbed a couple pencils and meter checked them. One had no conductivity and the No. 2 proved great. Great idea rather than buy conductive paint. The problem I have found is that once the rubber mold starts to shed that "Oil," you have to clean the thing more often. I am wondering whether the oil is from the injection molding process (A release agent)?
@cushtie442 жыл бұрын
I Google the problem of oil between keypad & pcb , it said it’s silicone oil that is released from the rubber keypad because when manufactured the rubber was not baked enough to remove silicone oils, i noticed it’s worse in the area of most used buttons
@orfeous Жыл бұрын
Same here.. under my volume up and down there was some oil.. causing the conductive pads not getting contact. Though there is some wear in the middle of the pads from the pcb so buttons does not work. Tried this pen trick as well but only lasted like 2 days

How long does this pencil-fix work for a TV, for instance, with a remote that's typically almost constantly in use after the TV is switched on? For how long does the pencil graphite "stick" to the contact points that it's applied to? A week, a month, a year? Only a few days? Paul G

Particular problem with DirectTV remotes. The bottom black part has 2 layers. Hard plastic, PS or ABS, and soft layer, perhaps PVC with plastifier. This particular external layer makes the remote to stick to any surface and not sliding. And this is what creates the problems. Slowly it emits plastifier fumes that condense on the inside, on the PCB and buttons. Plastifier is insulator, and the conducting rubber does not touch the metal terminals. Take it apart, wash the plastic parts with soap and water, and the PCB with rubbing alcohol. Remove the yakky sticccky residue. How to take apart the remote. Remove the batteries. On the bottom there are two small black screws. Take them out. Flip the top. There is an oval insert at the middle. Remove it gently with a small sharp flat screwdriver. Start around the blue button. Under it you will find 4 more longer screws. Remove them. There are several snap-ons. Thats it. Wash, reassemble.
@ecologicaltime2 жыл бұрын
You have explained a point about plastifier and it being an insulator. Thank you!!!
@west_park79932 жыл бұрын
@@ecologicaltime this problem is associated particularly with the DirectTV controls. I want to add that many new models of cell phones have this non-slippery back side. you put them on the dash board, they do not slide and do not fall. the surface is smooth, soft and nice to touch. This is again, thin layer of plastified PVC. However, with time, plastifier migrates from the matrix to the surface and becomes sticky and yakky and attract dust. I am worried about the broad use of such plastifiers, phthalate esters, they are known hormone disruptors and affect the development of children.
@ecologicaltime2 жыл бұрын
@@west_park7993 thank you. Do you know how do the esters enter the skin. I am sure many plastic products from unregulated toy factories have this problem and children put these things in their mouth. Then there are the adult products but i suppose those are regulated better?
@west_park79932 жыл бұрын
@@ecologicaltime esters are non-polar and enter the body through skin. so do many other solvents. gasoline, chloroform, benzene, dmso...

@serekes20023 жыл бұрын
That liquid is silicone oil The rubber starts to degrade and leak oil over the pcb that is why the buttons stop working
