We take a stab at filling in all the rusted rock chips on the Audi's hood and bumper, and get a little carried away doing paint correction on the entire car...

If I can make a suggestion. When applying the paint take a razor blade and just lightly use the edge to slide over the excess paint. The result is it will fill in those chips very smooth so they don’t look rough from the paint brush. Then I let mine dry and added a second layer after each one settled. The result was the chip fill was nice and level. Then after all your other process it would be almost perfect. Great Video man!

@@MGMotorsports Another way I saw from another vid was to softly blob the paint from one corner and let it flow and fill the patch a bit like solder. Then it will form a soft uniform coat. Im still too scared to try this haha. Great vid

Just an FYI, even though you went high on the paint when it was wet, it dries very very thin. You should do multiple coats of the 1 stage to build the entire spot up to level then once the middle of the spot is just barely above the height of the rest of the paint, let it dry and then hit it with the sand paper. Your big chip in the middle is all very very low which is why you can see it so much.

Sometimes its better to respray the whole hood, you can fill small rust chips but the big ones will be visible

Would it be a better idea to use some self leveling primer in stead of multiple layers of paint?

Just thinking maybe for that bigger patch for a better finish mask around it and do several thin coats with a spray can in stages? I've never done this, my bonnet is peppered with small rusty chips, car is in use daily so don't have time to take it off and do the whole thing

Did you consider replacing the clear coat & putting on a ppf?

It is a great video. Thank you. Is clear coat okay for the soft sanding, or should I reapply the clear coat? Thanks,
@MGMotorsports
@MGMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
If you are able to properly compound and polish after you should be fine as long as you have enough clear coat. I’ve never had to reapply clear

awesome video this is gonna help me but quick question, i have my car paint and the materials to remove the rust as well as paint thinner but can i fill in the holes with just the paint wait for it to dry and apply clear coat from a spray can and not mix it with the paint? thank you!!
@MGMotorsports
@MGMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely you can, the only reason I like doing it this way is getting the height of the paint perfect doing a 2 stage (base then clear) is tricky. Single stage works much better since you don’t need to be perfect and can sand it down, but the results aren’t as good either.

@@MGMotorsports how would you do the ratio like 1/2 paint and 1/2 clear. i can probably spray the can in a small bowl and mix it in with the paint. or i can just buy the clear.
@MGMotorsports

I clean the rust out completely with 4 to 1 P-Acid. Idk if your primer has a rust solvent but i don't play with rust

Metallic paint is hard to do. The flakes kind of follow the shape of the 'dabs' if that makes any sense. Its pretty much impossible to get it right unless your spraying a larger area.
@MGMotorsports
@MGMotorsports 4 жыл бұрын
completely agree, but spraying it wasn't in the budget unfortunately, this worked well enough and was a drastic improvement over what it previously looked like

can i use isopropal alcohol instead of paint thinner?
@MGMotorsports
@MGMotorsports 4 жыл бұрын
You can, it’s better than nothing, but the paint thinner will break down a little more than IPA does

That’s a hell of an improvement. I’m about to deal with some very small rusty rock chips which are scattered across our car’s hood. I think you had a tough situation with those larger chips. Well done. 👍🏻
