I love this vid. Luckily my issue was just a loose white wire in my thermostat, but people need to see and hear that this is the way you make an informational vid. Clear, precise, and a good pace in the narration. No music in the background, (which is OK), but not when it’s louder than the person speaking. Thanks a million. Thank you for the information! You are a gifted teacher. I have more info pertaining to my Heat pump saga. It is a bit lengthy but has some more background. In your video you said the two most common reasons for a fan not working is a faulty relay or a faulty blower itself. I bypassed my thermostat and jumped red to green and no fan. I added the white wire to the red jumper and the fan came right on blows air but not cold or hot (but it’s a heat pump). Lasted about 30 seconds and then cut off. 220 power is to the transformer and 28 volts out. When on cool/ fan auto- it all works perfect (Fan/ cold air/ condenser fan) When on heat setting the thermostat says heat on but no fan or condenser fan. R-410A heat pump comfort control system code says “High pressure control lockout” locking out the compressor. Open high pressure control. The unit requires a manual reset. Do you think it still might be a reversing valve? I can’t get the air handler codes without a code reader.

My electric furnace was blowing cold. I figured it was the heating coils. I saw them new for around $200. So after watching this video, I started at the white wire, it was a little loose and side note it also looked corroded. I just tightened it down and now my heat works again. I learned a lot from this. Thank you.

the tiny current that a multi meter uses to test resistance is what causes readings to fluctuate while ohm testing. the very small current will interact with capacitors and inductors. this is why Nmore said to try and isolate (disconnect) whatever you are ohm testing from the circuit for an accurate reading. if you've ever conducted a resistance (ohm) test and the reading fluctuates, the current from your multimeter is flowing through a capacitor, copper windings, inductors, etc. AWESOME VIDEO!

I am perplexed-maybe some more background info would help you/me. The thermostat wiring in question is located in the basement and there is the same thermostat upstairs as well. Also there are two separate identical Rheem units with the upper only being larger. Both upstairs and downstairs ran perfectly. We remodeled the basement and during the process I removed the wiring from the thermostat. I took pictures of the wiring before removal. Once finished I rewired the thermostat identical to the picture. During the troubleshooting I checked the upper wiring and it was identical to the lower. I do admit during the testing of the unit I did go back and forth from program to permanent hold in a rapid sequence back and forth which could explain the lock. One thing that makes me wonder is- in by passing the thermostat with jumpers the heater fan came on. On the thermostat where the white wire lug is was real hard to loosen and tighten to hold the wire in. When I thought it was tightened sufficiently the wire came out. Finally held with a vice grip to assist in torque. There’s little torque available with small screws and precision screwdrivers but all the others were ¼ of the effort. Do you think the thermostat could be bad since the fan won’t come on until I bypass it with jumpers? Maybe the lug isn’t making contact in the thermostat. Or am I way off scent. What do you think?

You should seal the hole behind therm, if there is low pressure in home attic air will blow right on thermistor. In Florida too, I disconnected my heat strip for efficiency with a heat pump. I don't need it coming on with a >1F increase. Also, the only way to check the value of cap is with a cap meter, just a 30% off in capacitance can cause motor to slow start and increase amps. I would just replace them every 10 years for $5-$10. My 5uf cap was at 3uf and running amps where double and speed was off.
@electronicsNmore6 жыл бұрын
Funny you mentioned the hole, I stuffed it with insulation when I put back the thermostat. As for the cap, you and I both know a cap tester is best, BUT this video was made for people that more than likely won't have one. Doing what I show will rule out an open or shorted capacitor. Thanks for watching!

Wish I could get rid of the heat strip here in the Mountains myself.
@publicmail26 жыл бұрын
@@tectalabyss you running a heat pump if so you can disable it, if that's your main source of heat then no of course. The new mini splits have 100% efficiency down to 0F, of course that means 300% vs a heatstrip or 3 x less electric for same BTU heat vs heatstrip. And insulate R-50+ in attic.

Our heater stopped working normally this night. The heater starts, runs for ~1-2 sec and then shuts off, then after 1-2 min it comes back blows a bit (no hot air, I tested w/distant thermometer) air, and shuts off again after 1-2 sec. So the fan come on and off, but heat never comes. Also what is interesting 1st time (after you reboot it or shut off and on Furnace brake), it comes more sturdy and works longer. But then comes (fan only I understand) on and off very slightly. My question is: Can you measure voltage between those colored wires, and if so what would be the readings? Thank you for so informative film. Update: Unfortunately I did 2 things simultaneously: 1. I reset AC Breaker for any chance, though it seems not to be stripped, and I replaced it previous summer, 1 leg on top was slightly moving though. But after I reset it still it gave some movement, very slight. Also when I was purchasing the Breaker at ACE I pointed out that it was a bit moving, that leg (and it was only 1 breaker (30A double) there). The manager assured me that it is normal, it can move a bit. The breaker was working ~1 year with no problems and I don't know if it was the breaker which gave the problem, bcs 2. I also removed the Thermostat and tightened screws on all the wires slightly. So unfortunately I can't tell for sure what exactly corrected the situation, but now everything is working fine and distant thermometer shows ~103F out of vents. Thank you again for pointing out on possible problems.

Hello and thanks for the great explanation. What do you call the ceramic post just before the thermal switch. This post feeds the switch and basically has a wire crimped on the inside of it from post to post. I just found it broken on the inside. I'd call it some sort of fuse, although it looks like it just broke at the crimp, and not from heat. Can I just silver solder it back together? Thanks.
@electronicsNmore5 жыл бұрын
The ceramic is an insulator for the resistive wire(heating element). Post a link to a picture.
@bertrodriguez30875 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore Thanks for the response. I realize that. In your video, the thermal switch is fed by a wire which comes from a ceramic post with 2 terminals mounted by a center phillips screw directly above the thermal switch. Power comes in to this terminal, then exits the other side of this terminal to the thermal switch. If you remove this terminal (by removing the phillips screw), you will find a bare, crimped, wire connecting the two sides like a fuse. This is on the back side so it is not visible until removed. It is exposed to the heat of the coils. Seems like some sort of fused link to me. I was just wondering why you would need a fused link and a thermal switch.

I did watch this entire video, but theres a whole lot i wouldnt remember and the circuit box is deep under my house and the cover is screwed shut, and I would need to get these different meters to conduct any tests. I was hoping maybe you could make a deduction for what my problem is. My thermostat seems to function properly, new batteries, and it does tell the fan on the blower outside to turn on, but absolutely no air current/pressure is traveling through the ducts at all that are underneath the house let alone up and out the vents inside so neither the air conditioning(cool air) or heating(warm/hot air) is passing through any of the duct work. The copper piping that is connected to the blower does remain hot. From your experience what could be preventing the blower from allowing the hot air to the duct?

If you have a heat pump and it does not turn on when you go to heat then there's a problem with your thermostat connections more than likely.

It is not just the low voltage transformer that could cause no power to the red wire.Could be no power;could be blown fuse;could be open wire then the low voltage transformer could be fault.

That was all made clear in the video.

One thing this video forgot, and that I just ran into, if you have an emergency heat setting on your thermostat, and it works in that setting but not in regular heat, there will be a switch on the back of the thermostat that is most likely set to HP or pump, it is quite possible that this is the fix you need.
@electronicsNmore4 жыл бұрын
Yes, AUX heat. When I made the video I figured that people would be repairing a system that worked fine in the past, I didn't take into account that the their thermostat could've been switched out and not properly set up. Thanks for watching Bill! Be sure to check out my very wide range of videos and share. kzbin.infoplaylists
