I worked for a family friend and who was THE BEST boss I ever had. Working for such a wonderful family made those crappy parts of the job all but disappear. I love watching your channel. What size hole saw did you use to make your plugs? I quickly realized you cant make a plug using a hole saw that is the same size as the hole that needs filled - it will be too small. For example I had 1" holes to fill, and even 1 1/8" hole saw plugs were too small. I had to use 1 1/4" hole saw to make the plugs, which were a bit oversized and had to be reduced to fit.

My guess is that the square cut out was used as a laundry chute. Quick shot to the laundry basket in the basement and near washer. Or a heating and air vent. I've learned a lot from your channel. It's given me hutzpah to get out and get back into handy man work.
@robj27044 жыл бұрын
Is that going to be covered by the island?
@the-chillian4 жыл бұрын
Laundry chute makes no sense in the kitchen, since that's not a place that typically generates a lot of laundry. I'd guess it's not for HVAC unless there's evidence of a forced-air system having been in place at one point -- and since TH says there used to be a radiator where the refrigerator now is, almost certainly not. Someone else suggested an air exchanger for a heater or wood stove on the lower floor -- but again, there should be some other evidence for a system like that. I'm guessing it was a trash chute.
@NongNongHead4 жыл бұрын
On other video it shows the hole cut on the underside of the cabinet and a shelf about a foot above the hole... it was open and uncovered when he opened the cabinet... if it were old or unused why wouldn’t it have been covered by the current owners. Looked too awkward for trash and there would be no reason for a temporary access cut for repairing a pipe or something... ask the current owner.
@rich38214 жыл бұрын
@@the-chillian And it's a bit small for a in floor gas heater. The kind much older homes used. I've seen some odd things home owners have done. So it will be interesting to find out.

Great content and totally agree that before the finish goes down you have to be positive beyond a shadow of a doubt it’s totally dry. So many people want to forgo the filler stage and wonder why for the next 10 years they’re not happy with the results. Total time over years of service , a extra few hours now are insignificant when divided out in service life of the floor. 👍👍

@droolbunnyxo95654 жыл бұрын
@@howmanybudlightsdidthattak4120 True, but leaving a 3/8" or so expansion gap all around the room's perimeter will help keep the floor & filler from buckling & lifting, yes? And any hairline gaps will quickly fill with dust & dirt that's tracked in from outside. Realistically, wood being a natural product, the homeowners may have to accept some imperfections to surface over time. You have to know your customer a bit beforehand; some like quirky, others don't.

The hole in the floor was for a gravity heat well..... We had those in the farmhouse I grew up in. They were also great for spying on my parents card games! Big cast iron grates on them. Maybe it is a Midwest thing, I have not seen one sine I moved to Oregon! Careful with the glue-bot pour cap... If you over-tighten them, they crack!

When my family lived in a old house that relied on wood heat, big ugly thing, those grates where scary when I was young.
@jdshear014 жыл бұрын
I've seen several old houses here in Ohio that had those big grates, usually between first and second floors and in the center of large rooms. I've also seen laundry shoots in a hundred year old house but that seems like an odd location unless this hasn't always been the kitchen, those are usually built into a wall area or close to a utility room. You never can tell unless you start tearing things out and even then it's a guess.

There’s just something about seeing finished (refinishing😉) hardwood floors that just LOOK so great. Yes, not necessarily idea material for a “modern kitchen”; but, do like a nice finished hardwood floor, especially in old houses; where the floors have some character since they were most likely installed w/ some blood, sweat, & tears😉 Just don’t do things this way as much anymore, & finding an old house that was built back than w/ the “old style” etc.... IS just pretty cool to see & work on💪🏼 Doing a very fine job, w/ taking great care & attention to detail👍🏻 Happy Holidays Handyman 🦃❄️

The square cut in the kitchen is for the garbage. Normally there would be something on top of the hole, covering it, there will be a hatch that you can open and drop garbage in there, in the basement there will be hooks under the hole to attach your garbage bag. Mostly they are placed in a corner: Its an easy way to not have a garbage can in the kitchen. we had one too at our house, but stopped using it few years ago.
