You gave me the confidence to perform a complete rebuild on my rear end. It worked out fine thank you for the clear view of what is required. I had all the comforts of home so could pop things into the freezer over night.

My hero! That was absolutely amazing. I have pulled apart every part of my BMW (no, seriously, every part) except the final drive. My garage is humble, but still not “in the field”, so I have no excuse to fail, especially with your excellent tutelage. Cheers, good sir!

Your work in this video came in very handy for me. My bearing went out yesterday and with your help I'll be getting everything back to new by the end of today.

Glad to hear you found the video useful. In case you have a rig(sidecar), it is likely that the housing has also worn out and should be replaced as well. Otherwise the new bearing will only last 10.000km (about), and then you need to change the bearing again. Also when you change the housing, I assume you need to do the shimming again. In case you have done the repair on a solo bike the housing should be fine.

@@SauerkrautTofuwurst I thought about using a sidecar but I like having just the bike so I can squeeze in and out of tighter situations.

Heat torch and a freezer worked on mine, heat and it drops off and then freeze the crown wheel and heat the new bearing in the over GENTLY and drop the bearing over the crown wheel works a treat, no pullers used to do mine.

not sure what you want to do? I guess you mean the ventilation valve, so that the air can change in the rear drive?

Hey, how did you determine the shimming for bearing preload in the field? Just wondering! :-)
@SauerkrautTofuwurst
@SauerkrautTofuwurst 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. First of all, the tolerance of the bearing is much tighter compared to the allowed range of the shimming, thus I did not re-do the shimming. Secondly, I had no tools with me to do this properly even if I wanted to. The problem, I concluded later, is that with the sidecar, the final-drive housing is wearing out! Thus when I change next time the bearing after 60.000km (+/-) I will also change the housing.

Usually the reason the main bearing fails on the BMW is that the pre load shims are sized incorrectly. Replacing the bearing does not always address the root cause. Typically the bearing will fail prematurely again. Of course measuring and determining the correct size is hard or impossible in the location you were at.
@SauerkrautTofuwurst
@SauerkrautTofuwurst 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank. That is correct. One way to measure the distance while in the field, is to use soldering thin, squeeze it, and measure the thickness. However, with the sidecar attached, it seems that the side-forces put too much pressure on the bearing and the housing. The combo lasts about 60tkm and then one should replace both, the bearing and the housing. The housing gets widened, and in the end the bearing can be inserted and taken out without force :-o

Luckily my 1150GSA FD bearing collapsed a mile from home and it happened in the summer. You did not mention the FD shims which are inserted before the bevel cover installed. It is good to do it yourself by learning from these videos and knowing what tools you need, especially the 7mm hex socket.
@SauerkrautTofuwurst
@SauerkrautTofuwurst 6 жыл бұрын
I used the old shims. (1) I had no others and (2) according to the mechanic in Finland, there is no need for re-shiming if one only changes the big ball bearing. If you also change the inner small bearing then one needs to re-shim.
