Over the many years of wrenching on older cars I realized on thing. Replace all system components while it’s apart. Not always, but most of the time. Radiator, pump, hoses, clamps, thermostat, etc. then there is zero guessing and my time is too worth it to rip it all apart again. Love your videos. I’ve got a 2012 xterra so very

Great video! I would add to start with a good system flush before draining the system entirely. You can purchase some from a parts store or use vinager. It may even take some of the corrosion off the temp sensor so you don't need to replace it

Two questions: 1) What about also opening the engine block drain plug(s) to remove all the coolant? 2) Would you mind listing what tools you used to remove the hoses and thermostat? I just want to double check I have everything. Thanks again. Love the series on the Xterra as I have a 2007 Frontier.

If you open that valve in the radiator it is lower than any point in the engine so you should be able to get almost all of it out of the engine and certainly all of it from the radiator. I'm not sure on all the tools. The hoses I just removed the with needle nose pliers and the water pump used regular sockets.

My x-trail is fine although pulling a caravan up hills and in heavy traffic, the temp goes up, although I controlled it by using the heater and blasting hot air into the car. Should this worry me?
@reggiekenner1527
@reggiekenner1527 Жыл бұрын
I should have found this video first. My temp gauge has been dropping to the lowest point while driving then going up again depending upon whether I was going uphill or down. Indications were air in the system and I spent hours on multiple occasions with the big funnel and squeezing hoses hot and cold. I've finally decided that the Nissan garage can probably deal with it and since the 2011 Pathfinder has the original hoses and the serpentine belt tensioner has 155,000 miles it probably needs to be changed. Well, a potential $1300 bill sucks the air out of my room as a lifelong do-it-yourselfer (I previously changed valve covers on this car). Now that I'm waiting for word from the garage that it's done, I'm wondering if, while replacing the two camshaft and the one crankshaft position sensors recently, I may have disconnected the connector to the temperature sensor and if it's just close enough that a change in the attitude of the car from up to down is allowing it to make temporary connection. Replacing the passenger side camshaft position sensor was a bear and it appears the tab on the temp sensor is right below or next to that cam sensor. Oh well. By the way, thanks for all the help with my other work on the Pathfinder. That valve cover replacement was fun? One of my neighbors saw me in the garage with parts hanging on bunji cords and asked what I was doing. When I told him he said, " Hell, I don't even know how to open the hood of my wife's car"

My 2006 uses the green Nissan coolant …. According to the research online I did most say otherwise but never seemed to be all saying same thing . One person I trust online said what I had heard about a lot of cars since forever … as long as you flush the system well you can use almost any antifreeze ( assuming it’s as well rated as original manufacturer suggested or better) I’ve seen and done so with gm cars more than a few times in past decades with no issues … but I don’t trust with cars after say mid 2000’s quite as much … so I ask the parts guy at local parts store , he said green cap which was green fluid and listed 2006 nissans all models on container …. But it was a weird years where it was supposed to be used . Maybe not a 2005 but if you’ve got original fluid in and it’s green I’d think it’s correct … unless previous owner didn’t do his research and just used any old prestone coolant … which I’m pretty sure is a no no..

Shit I was hoping the thermostat did it .. mine will run to operating temp quick and stay there for 10-15 mins .. then it keeps creeping up till it hits the 3/4 dash on the gauge and I put the heat on to slowly bring it back down … I kinda assumed it was the water pump but don’t know if I can find time to do it myself and am worried about the whole idea of it being run off the timing chain … ugh

@@vicpnut1 Did you get it figured out? I'm looking at thermostats for my R51 Pathfinder and AutoZone has a choice between a 170* and a 180* t-stat. Maybe the lower temp. unit would be better for you? I'm in northern Ohio, so I'll stick with the 180* for heat in winter.

I have a 2006 Xterra where the trans fluid mixed with the coolant. I understand what needs to be done with the trans but I have flushed the coolant where it looks very good. However once the truck gets hot from running for a while I hear a noise coming from the left side of the front of the engine that resembles a squeaking belt however as soon as I release the pressure in the system by opening the radiator cap the squeaking immediately goes away. any idea on what this could be? thank you for any information John
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 8 жыл бұрын
Well first of all you really should not be driving the truck until you get the transmission bypass fixed. This problem could completely destroy your motor. Once you do get that fixed you should really go though the cooling system and replace everything that you can. This includes the temp sensor, the water pump and the thermostat. Shoot, if I were you I would even replace the radiator. Then those fluids mix it increases the viscosity of the fluid and it can block small ports that the radiator fluid would normally be able to get through. I understand that it is a ton of work but in the end you should be in good shape.

Still stalling so thinking fuel pump, not looking forward to that given you have to drop the gas tank. I replaced 2-3 times and had a garage check it out too. My dash still lights up. Been told that circuit controls ABS, 4 wheel drive, and traction control. I’ve been told only option is to take to dealer and have it totally repaired due to a short somewhere in the line. Do you have any suggestions, input or videos? You do not need to worry about this problem. That defect is only in 2005-2009 models. If yours is a 2010, Nissan fixed the problem and a different radiator is installed. Ry I got a question, I have a 05 xterra and here is whats up. My wife's car had a check light for bank 1 cam position sensor and leakey valve covers forever. Using your video which was super helpful I did the valve covers changed the plugs and replaced the cam position sensor and VVT sensors on bank 1 and two because they were listed as possible culprits for the check engine light. Keep in mind that besides the smell of burnt oil the car ran great started great. So here is what is up the car is hard to start now with the new sensors... like it used to fire right up, now it has to cycle for like 4-5 seconds before it fires. So I took the intake off again and re-checked everything . I looked at all the plugs but one....the firewall on the drivers coil bolt was acting weird like it would loosen but not release tension. This could be my culprit but I have a hunch that its not. I just put it here because its questionable. Now , the car runs great it doesn't hesitate or stumble I drove it 100 mile yesterday let it idle for long periods of time and no issues just the long cycle on the start? So my thought is the cam timing is off and the guy before who installed the engine adjusted the timing with his fancy scanner, if that is possible so that the car ran right with the bad sensors? and now that it has good sensors .....the cam timing is off? I know it is a long shot but that is what i'm thinking.Honestly I am not even sure if a nice scanner like at the place that installed the engine could do that or not? Or is there a relearn process for the computer that I need to do when replacing vvt or cam position sensor. I did disconnect the throttle body which is how I found this video? God Bless I love your videos, I am pretty mechanically inclined, but I am in uncharted territory right now as this is not my cj or a small block Chevy and it seems like one sensor is messing all of this up. I could take it apart and put the old sensors back, but that just would get my goat if it was still doing this? Help Please

Question? Did you receive a p0128 code on your obd2 prior to doing the replacement. I'm kind of in the same situation. My temp dial doesn't reach the halfway point and when the thermostat is high heat at the idle position sometimes it will kick out cool air. Any suggestions?

Hey I really need your help. my Nissan Xterra is a 2005 too. My car cannot drive far or it will heat up, although, the thing doesn't mark the car hot, but when I open the front, it's steaming and you can smell it. It's obviously over heating, but I don't know if the water isn't going threw the hose, or if its the thermostat. What is the reasoning for this? I know it is not the thing inside the car that marks it.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 8 жыл бұрын
+Ann Banuelos First off make sure that you have the right amount of fluid in the truck. Buy some radiator fluid and wait until the truck is completely cold!! At least 1-2 hours after driving it. Then open the radiator and fill it up as much as you can and "burp" the system like I show in the end of this video. If you are able to get a lot of fluid into the system that means you were just low (very low). If there is not enough fluid in the system the car will overheat/steam and the temperature gauge will not show a high temp because no fluid is touching the meter. Also be sure to buy the proper fluid. If this fixes your problem then you need to find out how the radiator fluid is getting out of your motor. Be careful!!

I changed thermostat and flushed coolant. Burped the system so there is no air left. It is now consistently running hot for 5 months. Thinking that thermostat is no good. Any other ideas? I actually found bleeder valve (so I think) on the passenger side back of the engine bay. Just trace large pipe from radiator. It is a rubber nipple pointing up.

I don't mean to be insulting but are you 100% sure you bought the right coolant?
@ahtoh1

Valid question about coolant. When I drained coolant it was generic green. No issues. After much research there were 2 fronts. One used Nissan coolant and other generic green. Both used successfully. I went with popular green stuff. In either case, wrong coolant only affects corrosion and not overheating.
@evilvalis
@evilvalis 7 жыл бұрын
Check and see if the cooling system doesn't have a leak. Do a pressure test. If the system stays under pressure, check the radiator cap. Is it worn? Seated correctly? Make sure it is tightened all the way? Hoses? upper and lower radiator hoses? Have someone look at them while under a load. Does one collapse? Fan, fan clutch? E-fan, does it come on while the vehicle idles in the driveway? How's the expansion tank look? Fluid in the expansion tank? Check all of these.

Dude. This is a great video - thank you for taking the time to put it together. I have an '06 Xterra with a manual trans that just creeped over 150k this winter. It has been an incredible vehicle, and I have honestly not done any maintenance other than preventative and/or routine. However, I am still running on the original clutch, and was wondering if you had any plans to replace your own, or if you suggest having it professionally done? I am very mechanically inclined... but the X has just never given me a reason to do major surgery. Hoping you will have as good of luck as I have had with mine - the 4.0 with the manual trans is a bullet proof combo!

+Garrett Dean thanks man I love mine too! I don't plan to touch the clutch unless it gives me problems. As of right now its locking in great. If you are mechanically inclined I would say go for it! I think the biggest chilling you would have is getting the truck far enough off the ground to effectively work on the clutch.

Oh I didn't realize you were talking about a first generation. That's totally different. The fan is always going to be attached to the back of the radiator in front of the motor. I do not know anything about the first generation but if it is electrical then always check the fuses first. If the fuse is bad then replace it and see if that fixes it. If not then its most likely the relay. In that case you will have to research where it is.
