I have followed this guy's process on the 99 to 06 inner and outer replacements. I have to say that his guidance helped me through the dark side of the job. Not only because of his determination to get the job done, but how not to be afraid of making a few little missteps. I tried to pay someone else to do this for me however I was unsuccessful. I took it on myself. It isn't something that a lazy or unskilled person should do. I had to replace the entire inner rocker floor flange as the rust was getting into the floor. One thing that I would recommend... buy hard metal drill bits to drill out your welds. Titanium bits (or Princess Auto/Harbor Freight ones) are no good. Buy the $20 hard metal ones. They cost a lot but save time. I blew out my first el-cheapo air chisel. Most of the replacement rockers are made in PRC. They won't fit 100%. I will guarantee that the cab corners won't fit 100% by the time you get to welding them on. I had to make small filler panels to fix voids on the back of the cab. Be prepared to make your own patch repairs once the rockers are on. This can be done by using hunks of metal from the pieces you don't use or by implementing other filler method. I used a coat hanger along my B post to fill the voids and used 20 ga. to fix other voids. I suggest watching welder techiniques on body panel repairs before getting into this. Now that I'm done, I'm very grateful for Midnight Paint and Body for giving me confidence to see this repair through. I'm a better welder and far more confident with the help of these videos.

What grinding discs do you use on your angle grinder?? I have been using some dewalt discs on a 2012 Tahoe and taking forever to cut through! Thanks for the video!

I use a brand called Fokus for zip cuts and flap discs. I get them off Amazon, for a good price

What site did you order the rockers from? I like the set you got
@Johnnymidnight Жыл бұрын
I order directly from LKQ, I only use the OEM style rockers on customer vehicles. Any auto parts store should be able to get them

do you paint the inside of the new panel before welding it on

Most often, yes, and I also treat inside the panels with oil once everything is painted

Great video, what would a job like this typically cost?
@Johnnymidnight Жыл бұрын
These are pretty pricey, parts are expensive (I won’t use the really cheap parts) and pretty labor heavy, they’re typically in the range of $4000 to do rockers and cab corners.(Canadian dollars 😉)

What would you do if the inner rocker is rotted out but the customer doesn't want to replace the inner rocker?
@Johnnymidnight2 ай бұрын
I personally probably wouldn’t do the job if the customer didn’t want to do it properly. I understand everyone has a budget, but it takes a lot of work to build a reputation for doing quality repairs
@benprice40212 ай бұрын
@@Johnnymidnight I understand that, but if they didn't want to do the inner rocker what would you do to tie the outer rocker so it's not flapping around? Would you take a few pieces of metal and just weld to the outer rocker then to whatever you can on the underside

What is the ballpark price to have that done by a professional? Price with painted and price with the owner doing the painting
@Johnnymidnight4 ай бұрын
In my shop typically $4500-5000 range, about $750 of that is paint time. I’ve heard of collision shops telling people as much as 12000🤦🏻♂️.
