what`s a good multi purpose primer? I`m working at my garage and planning to do some cars, the most commom problem here in australia is peeling clear coat damaged by sun, I don`t wanna spend with a lot of different cans of primers and I don`t wanna make big repairs, what do you recommend in this case? like sanding the damaged clear coat with 180/240 and which primer should I use? 2k? by the way, in that case of damaged clear coat can I just sand it and put the base coat over without primer and still have satisfactory results? cheers boss
@Johnnymidnight
@Johnnymidnight 5 сағат бұрын
If you’re sanding the delaminated broken down clear, it will need to be primed and sanded, as the transitions at the edges of the feathered out clear could wrinkle if you just put down new base. You might also just be able to spray urethane sealer then base “wet on wet”, but priming and sanding will give the best results. Any urethane primer/surfacer should do the job

Hi John, just curious on what a 'few more years' is after a repair like this? I know theres lots of variables but can you give a time frame from your experience from shortest to longest survival time for these repairs?
@Johnnymidnight
@Johnnymidnight 2 күн бұрын
I would expect using these cheap parts that they would probably be a 4-5 year repair, really dependant on upkeep. If kept clean I think they definitely last longer than less cared for vehicles. If using the better quality OE style parts, I feel they will last just as long as the originals did

Nice Job Chinesium. I really enjoyed this video, I've never watched anything like this before. You make it look easy but I might try this on my old Corolla that needs both rear wheel arches replaced. And thanks for letting us know we don't have to order these parts online, we can go to our local auto parts store. 1) Is there any concern with welding so close to the gas fuel filler neck? 2) I couldn't tell, after spot welding around the perimeter did you go over it again with a continuous bead or was the weld a tight collection of individual spot welds? Thanks For Your Time: Shawn
@Johnnymidnight
@Johnnymidnight 2 күн бұрын
Just keep on spot welding until it’s solid welded. , it’s very easy to be impatient and warp everything. If you have concerns about fuel vapours, it can never hurt to tape up the filler area

Great video, thanks for this! How do you know how much adhesive you're going to need? I'll be doing slip-on rockers on my Ram dual cab soon and I want to use the 3M glue (I would butcher it with a welder), but the stuff is so expensive I would hate to buy too much. It would be a lot worse to run out halfway through though. Would a 200ml cartridge be enough for one side?
@Johnnymidnight
@Johnnymidnight 9 күн бұрын
I’d definitely get one for each side to be safe, it is unfortunately very expensive, but like you said, if you run out part way, you’re pretty hooped

Whats the difference between a sealer and a primer? My paint place gives me Shopline Pro JP36X Urethane Sealer as a primer. I put it on repairs with bare steel or aluminum showing, seems to be working fine for me so far. Located in New Brunswick.
@Johnnymidnight
@Johnnymidnight 9 күн бұрын
Only difference is in mixing. When mixed as a sealer, it has more reducer, and in some cases some clear mixed in so it’s thinner and flows out for applying paint wet on wet. When mixed as a primer/surfacer it’s thicker, to give some build for sanding.

For years I thought Clear coating was complicated and I would never be able to do it so it looked good enough to take out into the public... But after doing some body repairs on my old VWs (Old as in 2000 to 2005 ) I wanted to try and match the best I could to the rest of the paint on the car/s which had decent paint and clear from the factory still where there was no rust . Which means Clear coating over the base coat. So I watched videos and read some forums etc etc. I love spraying the Clear now lol. Biggest issue I have is trying to get a base coat match that doesn't look like crap. I blended a few areas with not bad results but trying to get the base paint has been a problem since I dont own a autobody shop. Anyways your videos are pretty good, you should have more Viewers!

Been doing bodywork for over 20 years, it's been body filler straight to metal how i was taught and have been doing it. I think the prime before body work is just another her sales tactic towards the new bodymen. Have also painted over prepped 2k high build, and now all i hear is you have to seal it🤦 never had an issue over the past 20 years, and now with all these procedures have seen more issues with paint jobs honestly. Just my opinion 🤔🤷. Anyways i do enjoy the videos great stuff👍

Great job looks really good And also good choice by your daughter. I have chrome bumpers would you recommend using the same paint for the chrome bumpers? I know you should send them with 80 grit and edge primer on it. Do you think it would last? My neighbor down the street wants to buy the chrome bumpers and I thought I would just buy bumpers that I can paint. What do you think for your comments?
@Johnnymidnight

I always recommend buying paint to match bumpers if you can. They take a lot of abuse, and don’t typically stand up very well
