HOW TO REPLACE A BILGE PUMP IN MY TWIN TROLLER X10
This video shows how I replaced a broken bilge pump on my Twin Troller X10. You can apply this to install a pump in any boat you need one. I am showing you how to do that so you can do it yourself.

I agree, we have all learned from others about things they did to their TT. Even when you think nobody would be interested in what you have done we hear from someone else that followed your lead. Fishing techniques and photos of what you catch and how you caught them are great. We all want to learn, no matter how much experience we have we can always learn more. If you are not learning you may as well cut your line and go home. Gerry

Drill a hole and mount the switch. Two wires come from the pump. Connect one wire to one terminal on the switch and the other wire to the second terminal on the switch. Cut one of the two wires and install a fuse where you cut the wire.

Thanks for the video, is the fuse from each motor 15amp? Want to get a spare or two myself. I just picked up a 2014 ttx10 for $300 had it in the water once, right motor seems to over power the left, not sure why, I cleaned the connections to the battery but haven’t had it back in the water yet to see if it was a connection issue.

Handy, Welcome to the Family! Here is what the breakers mounted on the boat say: "SHORTSTOP 24VOC X01 50A". There are two of them. One for the trolling motor on the left and one on the right. FYI, it is common to think the trolling motors sound different. My motors make different sounds also. At one point with both pedals on full speed the boat pulls to the left and a few minutes later the boat pulls to the right, with no change in boat direction, wind speed, or current to cause the change. I think it has to do with the shape of the hull rather than the trolling motors. Gerry

@Natural-Causes 3 жыл бұрын
@@LunkerFishing thx I really like this thing and can’t wait to get out more. interesting if I put both pedals all the way down the boat will definitely turn left, the right sounds like it’s running faster and the results on the water prove that, just not sure why. I was thinking it might not be getting a good connection but it could also have something to do with the left pedal box. If it continues I will probably pull the motor and take it apart. I don’t see a way to take apart the pedal control.
@LunkerFishing
@LunkerFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Handy, I just noticed your reply. Try switching the cables that connect to the pedals so the left pedal runs the right and right pedal runs the left. That way you can eliminate the pedals as the problem. Gerry

@@LunkerFishing yup that’s exactly what I did and it was the same result so it’s not the pedal , it’s the motor, just $300 is not cheap and they are coming out with 45lb thrust trollers in the fall, so thought if I’m going to replace one....

Hey Gerry! I'm curious to know why you went from a 600 GPH to a 1100 GPH for your TwinTroller? Did you have second thoughts, because of your experience of the water coming into your TwinTroller, where the 600 GPH wasn't fast enough to pump water out? Also, how do you like putting the switch on the battery box? Any negative and positive reasons for this location? One more question...what kind of lubricate do you recommend for the easy turning of the Honda 2.3 outboard especially using the extension. Mine sticks at the first attempt to move it. Cheers! Gary
@LunkerFishing
@LunkerFishing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary W. you have some great questions let me answer them one at a time. 600 GPH to 1100 GPH: I would have been very happy with the 600 GPH but the pump broke and I had to buy another. I could have bought the same pump but I did not want that one to break also so I looked for one that was sturdier and not necessarily more GPH. The 1100 was a great price and looked like a much stronger frame, which it is. The fact that it was more GPH is only an added plus. Water in the TT: I do not get much water coming into the TT and the old pump handled what water did come in so that was not my reason to go to a larger pump. There are two things that cause water to come in, one is rain and we get some big rain here in Florida at times, and the other is heavy seas. The TT is a smaller boat and is not made for bad seas. I often fish larger lakes as well as small ones but I try to watch the weather. If the wind starts to make a chop on the water and I am a mile or two from the launch I start heading home. One advantage of Florida is that there are many marshy areas close to shore in those lakes and the Kissimmee grass, Lilly pads, bullrush, and other weeds tend to hold down the chop. If there is a clear enough path to get through that marsh area I can tolerate bad seas much more than in open water. Sometimes my timing is off and I can get wet from the rain or bad seas. Switch on battery box: I could have a bilge pump with a float switch to turn it on and off automatically. That is not a bad idea and that is what Steve from Melbourne has. I prefer to turn it in and off manually. That is just my preference. I then needed to locate the switch in a place that was out of the way, not so low as to be in water inside the TT from rain or heavy seas, yet in must be readily accessible and kinda protected from accidental activation. That spot on the battery box met all those concerns. It is high up in the boat, not easily activated by accident, and I can easily reach the switch from my seat. Lubricant to stop the motor from sticking when turned: Obviously that area needs lubrication. I did not want to use a grease or oil that would make a mess and get all over everything. I use a silicone paste that I bought years ago at NAPA. It is clear and waterproof and lubes well. A small can of that was expensive years ago but recently I saw some on Amazon and eBay that was much less expensive than what I paid in the past. Another choice is Super Lube. That is very similar but is slightly more liquid than the paste. Again Amazon and eBay carry that. I had a business that I needed a food grade lubricant because what I did was around potable water. I had a one pound can of that Super Lube and still have some left. I have seen it at Walmart and Sports Authority also. I would be comfortable using either. That will get rid of the sticking, mine used to do that until I started using those lubes. I do not need to reapply that often but hydrilla gnats get stuck in the lube and to clean them off I wipe some of the lube away. Even then, I probably only touch that lube up annually. I hope that helped. Gerry

Another inquiry to ask my man Gerry. I have most of what I need for that late spring day in 2019 when I join the family of TT owners but wanted to ask about fishing line and just how long they last wrapped up in the package or especially how long they last on your reel. I would imagine that Mono can develop some serious MEMORY. When you fished for money I think this would be one of your biggest concerns.

Steve there are many types of fishing lines on the market now. Each have their own specialties. Please answer the following and I will try to give you an answer. I have never fished in Michigan so I have no idea what it is like there. Will you be fishing with spinning reels or bait casters? Is the water there clear or stained in color? Are you fishing in heavy cover or open water? Gerry

Congratulations Ron, welcome to the family. Yes, I drilled a small hole in the notch of the battery box for my bilge switch. Also Gerry in your inquiry about my lakes and such you asked about what type of combos I will be using. I have 4 baitcasters and 6 or 7 spinning combos and will have at least 4 with me in the TT. I have other rods and reels to switch set ups as I find out what works best for me in the TT. Thanks. Also I have both inexpensive stuff and some more expensive like the ABU Garcia Revo STX and several Pflueger reels. I have two 7 foot Veritas Med Heavy and Heavy rods and several Hank Parker set ups. As of now the only reel that has line on it is the Revo which is spooled with 65 pound braid for ripping frogs out of the weeds. I can buy more expensive stuff if I find that these are not working out very good.

Steve, here is what I suggest. For clear water use fluorocarbon line. Fluorocarbon can be difficult to use because the memory is so bad. It can be like fishing with a slinky, but keep reading. Mono has sooooo much stretch, especially 10 lb and less, it can be like fishing with a rubber band. Braid has NO stretch, can result in good hook-sets, but can be seen by the fish in clear water. Stained water like here in Florida it is not a big deal. Braid can cut through weeds better than other lines so it is especially good for those situations. Braided line also lasts for a LONG time. Best tip I can give you: When I lived up north the waster was clear, for the most part but I fished in heavy cover when I could find it. On most rods I used braid, bait caster and spinning, but I learned to tie good knots to attach a leader 3-6' in length of fluorocarbon to the end of the braid where it connects to the lure or hook in clear water. On most moving baits the fish cannot get a good look at the line because the lure is moving by fast so braid in smaller sizes can be used by itself. The next concern is line size. Braid is much smaller in diameter that mono or fluorocarbon. Clear open water, ten pound braid is good, especially with a leader on it. More weeds, heavier test. Most of my tournament rods have 30 pound test but there are weeds in most lakes here. Heavy weeds, heavier braid (50, 65, 80 lb test). I do not use a leader here as much as up north because of the water color and weed growth but I did when up north most of the time. Mono-if you get used to the stretch it can be used when you throw things like a spinnerbait but generally in 15 lb and up because thicker mono has less stretch. Color: you are trying to match the surroundings and that is why fluorocarbon is good, it disappears in the water so there is no color at all. On my braid I generally use moss green color and when the color wears off I usually run a permanent black marker over the last 4-5 feet. Some people claim in stained water they use brightly colored braid because, again, we have dark (tannic) stained water here. Fluorocarbon sinks, mono floats more, braid floats lots. Topwater baits: Like poppers or other slow moving topwater baits, mono is good because the fluorocarbon sinks too much and braid is so supple it often gets wrapped up in the hooks. Frogs or toads, it is a no brainer. They are generally used in or around weeds so braid is what to use for them. One last idea: I have never told anyone this before. Braided line can get "wind knots" where the line gets wrapped around the tip or other guides on the rod, especially on spinning rods. That can be very frustrating. One day I bought some off-brand braid on eBay. I have had that on my spinning rods since early 2017 and have NEVER had a wind knot, or a break off, since then. A spool of 150 yards was under $3 shipped to the house. I just checked with that seller and they do not have that line for sale right now but here is another seller that has the same brand of line for $3.99 plus $.50 shipping from Malaysia. I have never purchase from that seller but it is the same line I purchased before and here is their link. www.ebay.com/itm/8-10-12-15-18-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-60-70-80-90LB-Strong-Braided-Fishing-Line-TE-/282825378922?var=&hash=item41d9b4cc6a

So as I never owned a big Bass boat Gerry I could only imagine these little repair jobs that you do to your TT are minor in comparison to what you had to do with your big boats. Didn't you say once that your boat caught on fire. How did that happen and I could only imagine it was a scary day on the water. Oh by the way I do hope you had a great Thanksgiving as I did overeat for another year. I was actually at work and they fed us very well with everything. I just happened to be in our large break room when a lady from Pharmacy standing behind me was choking on a big piece of turkey. No one saw her and she managed to stumble forward as she was passing out and bumped my arm. I turned around and she was blue. I flipped her around and did the Heimlich Maneuver on her and that food shot out like a rocket. She started to suck in air and started crying at the same time. My old Police training really came in handy that day. I think I told her that I would rather be fishing. She is a bit bruised and her ribs are sore but she almost died on a piece of turkey and she said she will be happy to live with pain for awhile. Anyway I now know how to hook up my bilge pump in the spring.

The day my Ranger Bass Boat motor caught on fire I was on Lake Toho with a friend. We passed by a large gator and I spun around to show my friend. The gator went under so we waited a few minutes but decided to leave. I turned the key and smelled smoke. Flames were licking out of the cowl. 🔥 My friend grabbed the fire extinguisher and I yanked the cowl off the engine. Flames were still high from under the flywheel. I turned off the main circuit breaker so there was no power to the motor. I blew as hard as I could under the flywheel several times and eventually the flames went out, trying to avoid the fire extinguisher and all the mess that makes. When that was going on I was thinking about what I would do if we had to abandon the boat and swim. It was a long way to shore, there were no other boats in the area, it was a very marshy area, and I was not thrilled to swim with that 11' gator we stopped there to see. I had to get a few miles back to the boat launch with the trolling motor. My mechanic said it was an electrical fire at the magneto. I always wear an inflatable live vest while in the TT and I have a fire extinguisher mounted in front of my battery box in the TT. 🧯We even fished a little on the way back but I was a little rattled so we headed to the launch. Nothing like thinking you need to abandon the boat because it is on fire. Back to the choking lady, Steve you did a great job! I almost had to do that to myself once a few years ago. It is great to have the training to know what to do when bad things happen. You are a hero in that ladies eyes, and ours too. Gerry

You can use this trailer without the Bearing Buddies and the original trailer lights but after a while I decided to add those items. In an older video I showed the Bearing Buddies and the LED lights but someone asked for more detail to install them so I made the recent video to show that. If you know which end of the screwdriver to use you can put the trailer together with no problems. It took a little time but I wanted to make sure I got everything right, when putting anything together for the first time I went slow. I put the entire trailer together in one evening. I would assemble the trailer on it's back on a flat surface like a garage floor then flip it over to install the bunks. If you have a drill or electric driver to attach some sockets and a few box wrenches you are good to go. Otherwise it will just take longer with sockets and a hand ratchet. I wish I had done a video of that but I was new to KZbin then. One word of caution, wear gloves or be careful of sharp edges on the metal parts. I also bought some reflective DOT stickers and placed them all around the trailer while it was new and had clean surfaces. I did that to protect the trailer as best I could from all the bad drivers out there but the lights do a great job illuminating the trailer on the back and the sides. If you feel like taking the time to photograph the assembly feel free to send them to me and I will make a video of that. We do not have a video of anyone assembling a trailer yet. My email address is TwinTrollerPicture@gmail.com and it is also at the end of all recent videos. I am handy but the skills necessary to assemble this trailer are not extensive. You can do it. It sounds like a "Welcome to the Twin Troller family" may be in order soon. 👍🏻 Gerry

Thanks, Gerry. I appreciate your input and information. I've had tools in my hands all my life, so I should be capable, it's just the fear of the unknown. I'm all in now. I'm ordering the Fisherman Deluxe package today.

I have tested one of these pumps for the last month, 8 hours a day on a solar panel, it leaked in less than a month. the seals for the power cables and the seal for the impeller drive shaft are woefully inadequate for salt conditions. not worth buying. look for a brushless option with no direct drive.

John, if I need one to run for months every day in my TT, I am in trouble and some how got lost at sea. I get your point though. Gerry

@@LunkerFishing it's more on the longevity of the unit and not have it dead when you need it most because it leaked. one would think a bilge pump would be built to last even if run a lot.

John, I get your point. Too bad the manufacturer does not also! Gerry

@@LunkerFishing the price of cheap Chinese manufacturing unfortunately. and shame to say, thus far, I have not found a better option that was not prohibitively expensive. (for my poverty level ha)
