its actually easy but you need to be careful and work slowly. also the plastic latches and snaps can break off depending on how old the car is. and those you need to buy new.

you may need a new latch assembly, but take the door panel apart and see if you can manually turn child lock off from the inside

Scotty, you make it all seem so easy, these Corolla door handles are really crappy, I've had to replace both inside and outside handles several times, they could have saved money elsewhere.

the corollas and camrys from that time were notorious for door handles breaking. I had to replace all the door handles for my Mother in law's 94 camry.

I know that in the middle of summer it's not timely, still try to imagine how easily these plastic parts break when the outside temperature is 20 ºC bellow freezing, which is frequent in the northern US or in Canada. I remember, that during the eighties, when the manufacturers migrated in mass to these plastic trim components from the earlier metal ones, I regularly broke those, such as door handle and window crank, specially in winters, 'till my hands 'remembered' to use them very gingerly.

i knew it! i have a 98 chevy prizm. the doors are nearly identical, minus the power windows, this video was perfect scotty. thank you. oh and the catalytic converter video helped me clean my stepmoms catalytic converter, which was causing it only to run at about 30mph top speed. now its working like normal again.

hi Scott,thanks for this video! I bought the ratchet set and managed to replace it. At the end ,I just can not put on several plastic needles to secure the plastic door frame and lost 1 10mm hex screws to tight the handle,but the remaining 2 screws manage to secure the handle tight. you can mix if it's the same viscosity. and those saturn engines are crap, so stick to the suggested viscosity, I've seen heavier oil ruin those engines.

check the alternator and battery, places like auto zone do that free. If they are good, replace the starter.

Great video, i had to fix the handle on a sprinter van the other day, similar thing except the lock barrel wouldn't come out and the new handle had the barrel built into it and it came with 2 new keys.

yea, me, I often throw those stupid plastic covers inside away anway, they dont' really do anything and make a sticky mess when you work inside

yep, they are all cheap and all break. Gm quality. Try hemmings motor news, if anyone can find one, it would be there.

I use to install a few hundred of these every day at the honda plant. It was a lot easier on the assembly line. The newer models are more complicated as they have a lot of adhesive and plastic grommits

open the door, take the panel out, and see what's broken. Often the inside handle assembly breaks

well, revving can't really break the exhaust (the engine, yes), but one that is old can get leaks any time just hitting a pothole.

Scotty is right about buying your parts online. Check e-Bay as well, I scored a headlight assembly for my 2001 Olds Alero (mine were leaking, both sides) and the lowest aftermarket price I found was $259.00 each! Would have been a $518.00 fix. Scored the same pair brand new on e-Bay from an auto parts store liquadating their inventory. The auction ended and I owned them both for $20.99 with free shipping!. Put 'em in myself and saved $498.00! Score!

Nice video! I'm glad on my 91 VW golf I don't need to remove the interior door trim.2 bolts on the outside, that's it. Each car is different.

take the inner door panel off, look inside. Probably the arm coming off the outer handle has fallen off where it snaps on. They have plastic locks on em that often break

I had to change an outer door handle on my `92 Ranger last year. Pain in the ass. Rather than being bolted to the door, it was held on with rivets. An hour of drilling and chisel work each to get the donor handle off at the junk yard and to get mine off at home. Ten minutes to attach the donor handle to my door with bolts.

perhaps see a locksmith who works on cars, they are good are opening doors using tools. Cause if not, ya gotta cut holes in the door panel to get it off if the door won't open, and that's messy

I finally got my a/c fixed . Someone had converted it to r134a but had no sticker . I had already bought r12 to recharge the system. I bought some r134a a lot cheaper . It still did not work so I put 12v to a/c clutch and the a/c worked the car got cold. I took the 1/2v off and ti stopped . I put a jumper lead and every time we need a/c I would re connect it . Itook a few days study the factory manual final found a bad ground on the a/c computer . Man what a hard problem . Even shop was confused

could be tons of stuff, bmws are insane to work on. See my video "fixing modern cars using high level scan computers" to see how a guy like me would tackle it, and realize more than 25 different things can throw that code. it runs fine, live with it.

old age is the problem, those things only last so long. If lucas didn't help, I'd live with it till it craps out entirely, then a big rebuild job would be needed. But as thunder advises below, get it scanned first and see if the circuits are working correctly first. Though on that old thing, normally they just wear out internally like yours

Hey Scotty, how about a video on door window repairs? I've got a Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi (called N5 in Australia) front passenger door where the glass rotates and falls into the door cavity, when the glass is wound down. I think it might be some glass clips that are broken, but not sure how to go about repairing it. It is hell to get the glass back in place, if the window is wound down!

ya gotta get it open to remove that panel. otherwise, you have to cut holes in the panel to get to the latch to unlock it manually, a real mess

as a temporary fix for a snapped off Camry outside door handle you can use a zip tie, use your fingertips to pull handle out then slide the tip of zip tie under the remaining part of the handle, then loop it around and zip it so that you can put your finger inside the loop and pull the handle open. This worked for me for years on my 99 Camry.

Is this the hole near the top upper corner of the glass that is covered by the outer weather seal strip? If yes well the hole in mine has nothing in. My window works fine in every other respect, e.g. the motor winds up and down etc. I think my car door has been vanalised / broken into at some point, before I bought the car; there is damage to the door window edge where it meets the glass. Thanks for the info and I have found even more via Google as a result; been looking for ages! Thanks!

@@maniah3916 Yeah, it was mostly accurate but in my case those little pop out tabs did not come out easely and I had to buy new ones. If you take your time and think it isn't a very difficult job.

Do I need to specify the door handle. Driver's side door handle, passenger side, or are they mostly universal?

first, just lube the latch with WD 40, that often fixes it.

of course check the child safety lock switch on that door, they can be turned on and they will do that. If not, time for a new inner door handle assembly

Scotty, I just recently got a problem with my 1998 Toyota Camry XLE door handle on the front seat passenger side. The door handle doesn't look broken from the outside. When the door is unlocked, it will not open from the outside, but it will open from the inside. The locks are locking and unlocking correctly. Whenever I slowly open all other doors, the handles seem to have a slight pressure or "catch" before opening, but the problem door does not "catch". Any sugesstions??.

they are all rather similar with just different fasteners here and there. But, they are all logical if you look closely, and once you do one, it's a snap after that
