Whelp... after seeing your video, I went down to my local hardware store and picked up the latching part. It took a bunch of fiddling to get the latch sliding properly, but I had it installed within an hour. The explantion of interior vs exterior functionality was great! Thank you! This video was to-the-point, answered all my questions, and was greatly practical without extra frills. Amazingly useful. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. Although most of it seems intuitive. I would have spent an hour figuring out the knob handle had an Allen key.

I think the wood of my doors has swollen due to 50 years of humidity, so the hole around the latch has become too tight for the latch to be pulled out or hammered out.. Any suggestions, besides replacing the door?

>AroundTheHome1 : I was eventually able to remove the door latches from two of my doors. I sprayed WD-40 Rust Penetrant between the latch and the wood, from the inside/backside (after exposing the inside by removing the door knobs) and let it soak for a few minutes. I stuck a screwdriver through a small hole in the interior of the latch and hammered persistently on the screwdriver shaft until the latch had moved about 3/16 inch outward. (It didn't budge until after I'd repeated the WD-40 spray & soak.) The exposed 3/16" of the latch -- actually the circular brass collar around the end of the latch -- was enough to grip well with plyers, so I hammered on the plyers until the latch came all the way out. So, both bedroom doors now have key-entry door knobs, which was my goal. I didn't replace the old striker plates in the door frames because the distance between the two screw holes is different with the new striker plates, but the old striker plates appear to work okay with the new door knobs. The new keys don't provide adequate security, though. The keys for both new door knobs are identical, so I assume someone could obtain a working key by buying the same model. It's time to rekey the locks.
