THANK YOU! for the great video! I woke up this morning to the sound of what I thought was a torrential downpour! Nope, something has ruptured on or near my expansion tank. The last time I called service (I have a 3 y/o hot water gas fired water heater) they said that it was not covered by my water heater insurance and ended up costing me more than $300 for a new expansion tank and a half-ass'ed job. The ass that came out also tried to rip me off by saying that the water pressure regulator was shot and needed replacing, also not under warranty. Nothing wrong with that as I found out. So, if worst comes to worst, and I have to replace the expansion tank, based on your video I see it's not that hard and you've saved me a ton of money, also, I know now I can shut off the water to the expansion tank so I can have water in my house until I can effect repairs. Had to replace my expansion tank a couple years ago. I have an 80gal water heater and when I looked it up the old one was too small. So. being the weekend handyman and home fix it guy, I bought the recommended sized expansion tank and I made sure the pressure was also right (according to the manuals). Every since I put it in the kitchen sink spits and sputter when you first turn it on. The only thing that changed was my installing the "right sized" expansion tank.

@EverydayJourney2 жыл бұрын
Normally yes but I couldn’t because I had a shut off on the hot water side to keep from having to drain everything. Interested I opened the safety pressure valve at the water heater. Some say this could cause it to malfunction. They also say there should be no shutoff on the hot side for safety. I can see how both could be true

@@EverydayJourney Ok, yeah I was curious because when I changed out the elements, I read that even one air bubble is enough to fry them. Then had zero after changing the elements with water blasting out when I had an empty tank and my cold water shut off. You need to get a water pressure gauge to hook up to your incoming water supply line. This gauge can be bought at Home depot or hardware store. In such case, I would either gauge it at the garden hose or better yet, the drain outlet at the bottom of your water heater. After you got the reading, you now have the incoming supply line water pressure. This ranges from 60 to 75psi depends what is regulated from your local water supply company. Next you will need to drain the water that is feeding to the supply line. If you have a sink at your garage, then turn the cold water line on or just drain the water in the water heater. This will put off pressure that is in the line to the expansion tank.Lastly, you will use a air compressor or some form of air pump to fill up the expansion tank. The tank is pre-charge normally at 20psi. Unless your water pressure is 20psi, you will need to match the pressure you had obtain earlier from the water pressure gauge. **Normally, you would be able to pump air in the expansion tank. But in some cases, the tank may be out of air a while and filled up with water and the air pump may not have the pressure to push out the water. So you may need to remove the tank. A wrench is all it takes to remove the expansion tank, however, since it's be held up by just the metal pipe system, be careful and not drop it, especially it's fill with water to start with. From what I understand, this is a yearly maintenance item that a majority of homeowners does not know. Usually, after a few years, the air pressure gets lost. Just like the tires in your car, over time, the air pressure get lost and you need to pump air in it to maintain the right pressure. For this system, the 2 items for yearly maintenance is drain the tank (due to deposits) and recharge the expansion tank (if needed to, take a reading before you drain the water heater tank won't hurt). Of course after, every 5 years, you need to check the temp pressure valve that is on the water heater to ensure it's working properly and not leaking (this item tends to be culprit when it leaks). If it's a continues to leaks, then it's the expansion tank failing or lost of compression, which may need to be recharged.Other items to check, are the zinc anodes which also has a shelve life has a schedule replacement life (check manufacture). This is also an important item to change out to ensure you will not prematurely replacing a new water heater due to leaks from a rusted tank.

Maybe I missed it, but did you mention setting the pressure in the Exp. tank to be the same as the water pressure based on the wather heater size? If you didn't, you should.? We decided to take a chance and just detach it and I (my girlfriend stood way clear) caught a spray of warm, cruddy water right in the kisser! No harm, no foul as we were able to empty the contents into the slop sink in our basement but it was still a mystery why the draining valve did work! Any ideas? If it had a valve shutting off the expansion tank only, you might not have had a way for air to get in there to replace the water that would leave the tank. Also, the rubber bladder may have moved completely over to cover the air valve so that nothing could escape.

+fakeusa, it fills half with water. The tank needs to be supported. Mine was supported with shims. Some use a hanger. However you can do it should work. Just use something that will support the correct amount of water
@JustinCrediblename7 жыл бұрын
it commonly hangs or uses a support bracket. when it hangs, it tends to hang from rigid pipe. stainless pipe fittings are pretty affordable on ebay. you might consider them. just watch out for bad threads - most of the cheap stuff has bad threads. Merit Brass is a decent cheap brand, otherwise go with some used fittings.
@kilts4u26 жыл бұрын
You would be wise to use STRAP HANGING material. . either plastic or aluminum. . around the drum of the tank. Then support it to a wooden joist. Shims work fine but if one is accidentally struck and removed, then all the weight falls back onto the fitting from the tank. In time, it will crack.

With these tanks, there is a bladder that separates water and air. Position doesn’t matter. If there was no bladder and you had to rely on gravity, you would need it to be placed upright
@watchingyou50033 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayJourney yeah, I know how they work. I just wouldn't do it that way. Imo too much stress on threads and fitting, also, I would assume the bladder would prematurely fail. Due to uneven pressure on the bladder. The top would more then likely trap air and dry out as well. Just don't think its the best practice. I'm coming from real world experience and your coming from you tube fairly land. Haha

... an expansion tank is an air tank,,,, it works best with less water inside,,,, this one is mounted side ways which is not good ,,, most are mounted with the 1/2 inch male at the top,,, which is also bad,,,, the air should be trapped inside the tank ,,,, i install them with the pipe connection down,,, which keeps the air inside the tank ,,, the label will be upside down ,,, but the tank will last longer ,,,,in this case ,, the elbow at the cold water supply ball valve should have been a '' T ''' with the extra fitting pointing up ,,,, this would also support the expansion tank ,,,, if water is coming thru the air stem ,,,, the tank needs to be replaced ,,,,,, water heat boilers take regular expansion tanks ,,,, depending on the size ,,,,,,,,, water heaters need '' domestic '' expansion tanks

Thanks for the enthusiasm. I don't know, and don't pretend to know all there is about these. I do know that I followed the manufacturer's instructions. As long as the bladder is intact, there is no need for a specific orientation. only if there was a failure would it matter.

Please people do not I repeat do not listen to a person that calls it a “hot” water heater it’s just a water heater
@EverydayJourney4 жыл бұрын
I’ve said this before but I’ll do it again to prove my point. “Hot” is a relative term. I bet that if I turned on the hot water until the heater turned on, then shut off the power, you would feel that the water coming out was still hot. Now if I turned the power back on it would be heating the water that you just said was hot. So I would be right. Now get off your high horse
@MiguelRamirez-oi8wi4 жыл бұрын
No high horse here just common Scene, the tank is an apparatus that heats cold water turns it hot and dispenses it. At no point is it heating hot water hence why the name is water heater not hot water heater now let’s hear your rebuttal journey man
@EverydayJourney4 жыл бұрын
It heats the water when the temperature drops. The temperature is normally not lower than 10 degrees before it turns on again. That would be somewhere around 115-120 degrees when it turns on. That would be “hot” for some people. What if I said you didn’t know what you were talking about if you were working on an automobile and you kept calling it a car. You may be a top mechanic but then someone starts heckling you because you didn’t call it by it’s proper name “automobile “
@MiguelRamirez-oi8wi4 жыл бұрын
The English word “Car” is believed to originate from Latin “carrus/carrum” ( wheeled vehicle ) or ( via old North French ) Middle English carre “two-wheeled cart,” both of which in turn derive from Gaulish Karros “ chariot “ it originally referred to any wheeled horse drawn vehicle, such as a cart, carriage or wagon. PS the synonym for automobile • auto •bus •car• horseless carriage• Machine• Motor• Motor vehicle•motorcar Now I say all this to say origins of words have a bigger importance than what you put on it Knowledge is power that’s why people pay real Plummers not a jack of all trades master of none

Fred conde can I add pressure to expansion tank after its installed???
@rss6084 жыл бұрын
pressure tank is on the cold water side is correct. I located mine under my kitchen sink, on the cold water side. It doesn't have to mounted on top of your water heater. could be any where on the cold water line in the house in front the water pressure regulator if you have one. Just a couple of flex hoses and a water T can make mounting and installing and servicing the tank, easy. Plumber like the waterheater mount because they get paid for changing the plumbing. Gotta use your brain people....

It’s suppose to be near your water tank for thermal expansion. Thermal expansion Wont reach dozens of feet from the tank

Not correct. It will expand at any point allow the way as long as it is not closed off from doing so. Near the water heater is normally best for looks, convenience, and space saving in the kitchen

Where's the vacuum breaker?
@EverydayJourney7 жыл бұрын
+gyver471 , not sure what you are talking about. Can you clarify?
@gyver4717 жыл бұрын
Everyday Journey I'm in Connecticut and its code to have a vacuum breaker it's like a backflow preventer it breaks the flow in case there's any reverse pressure so that the water doesn't get contaminated if line ever lost pressure or if a fire hydrant was opened. In the 80s and 90s there were cases of water being blue and tasting different people getting sick because the water from toilets would go back the rough the line if it ever lost power and when it came back it would be contaminated.
@EverydayJourney7 жыл бұрын
+gyver471, here we just have a check valve to prevent back flow into city supply. As far as your home water supply, I would think the float valves in toilets would act as a check valve being that they are at the top of the tank. For your needs, I would think that shutting off the main would be all that's needed. Not sure where your breaker for that would be. Might be one of those cases where a multimeter and a good labeled breaker panel would get you going in the right direction.
@EverydayJourney7 жыл бұрын
+gyver471, this is another reason I installed a ball valve on both, hot and cold, sides of the water heater. Turning them both to the off position eliminates flow from both directions unless I need it to

It's installed incorrectly. The tank is supposed to be installed in a vertical, upright position.
@EverydayJourney6 жыл бұрын
The tank can be mounted in any direction. The only issue is making sure that it is supported correctly
@emptech5 жыл бұрын
That is correct, the tank was mounted incorrectly, wonder why somebody mounted the tank horizontal? It puts a lot of stress on the pipe fitting. I don't see any reason why the TEE couldn't have been mounted to make the tank vertical, the direction up or down doesn't matter. The instructions that come with the tank I just bought is very poor but does show it mounted vertical. Jim
@EverydayJourney5 жыл бұрын
Any direction. You are right that vertical would be ideal. I have stairs right above this that do not allow a vertical position. Therefore, I mounted it horizontally which is allowable per instructions that came with the tank

We live in an apartment and it has an expansion tank, I know it's bad because it's really heavy and sounds like it's full. It doesn't sound hollow at all like it's supposed to and water is leaking thru are ceiling pretty bad. $680 a month for this piece of shit place, and they refuse to replace it and say it's still good. Also, it's held up by pvc pipes and the pipe that it's on looks like it could snap in half its bending to one side so much.
