I had a space heater in storage for several years plugged it in and last night and this morning smelt plastic burning so immediately unplugged it. I think the prong was a little rusty honestly don’t remember looking at it. FYI everyone should examine plugs before plugging into an outlet. I feel so stupid not doing that. Mine is a three prong plug. Will have to get the wire stripper too as well as replacement at HD or Lowe’s. Ty so much for your video. I too feel confident enough that I can do it myself! ✨👍

I had a vintage record player short at the base of the cord and the plug. It broke off at the connection of the two. If the cord insulation is failing I would recommend replacing the entire cord. We had a very old cord for a lamp in our shed. The insulation was dry and cracked. It was no longer doing its job. That can be very dangerous and is a fire and a shock hazard.

Labor will always be what gets you every single time so it's always been wiser to do it yourself when you can. My younger brother took his car to the dealership to have his battery replaced once. Once. He was young, he never made that mistake again. I don't remember the exact numbers as it was in the 90's, but the labor was 2.5x the cost of the battery (dealership prices, mind you, which are always higher but still..). For this repair, either DIY or buy a new one; the repair would probably cost nearly as much as a new appliance

Can you use a 125v15amp to replace the 120v 12amp
@xHadesStamps Жыл бұрын
15 amp is what you want. You just don't want the original amperage to exceed the amperage of the replacement. Other way around is perfectly fine (and you're only going to find 15A with the parallel blades and 20A with the horizontal neutral)

if the device works fine with two prongs, even if the ground prong broke do I still need to replace the plug? I really do not want to mess up the device(have never done any sort of wiring before) could I simply stick the ground prong back on the original plug and then use an extension cord or do I need to do the process in the video?
@ThriftyGarage Жыл бұрын
The ground wire is for surge protection or a short circuit. Will the device work without a ground; yes. But it would be best to have the device wired correctly.
@xHadesStamps Жыл бұрын
As Thrifty Garage said, you should. That's because with the ground pin missing, the device has a much higher potential to become unsafe
@echt11411 ай бұрын
Will this solve the problem on an extension cord where the plug/connector gets hot?
@ThriftyGarage9 ай бұрын
No, if the wire gets hot you need a larger wire diameter. May want to get a heavy duty extension cord.
@echt1149 ай бұрын
@@ThriftyGarage I said "where the plug/connector gets hot," not the wire. I think the wire is sufficient because the rest of the cord doesn't get hot.
@ThriftyGarage9 ай бұрын
Sorry, if the plug gets hot, that is concerning. I’d look at the amperage rating of the item you have plugged in, the extension cord and if you decide to replace the plug I’d be sure the replacement has a sufficient amperage rating. You might be on a 20 amp circuit with a 15 amp cord.

Not an electrician and not going to try this but curious what would happen if you just glued the metal prong back into its hole? If the prong simply broke of and could be connected to the piece that broke
@ThriftyGarage4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think glue would work. That prong received a lot of leverage when removed. It also needs to carry electrical continuity. Maybe some sort of weld like solder would work, but even then that’s a pretty small work area.

Polarized simply means that there is only one way to plug into the wall. Old outlets were only two prong, and not polarized. You could flip over the plug and still plug it in. The newer plugs and sockets are polarized if they have one large spade and one small spade. Check out my Christmas light install video for a closer look.
