When doing this job, douse that joint with penetrating oil first, it will help with driving the joint out. In most cases you can put the new joint in the freezer for a couple hours before you install it, it will keep needles in place and shrink the caps slightly so they slide right in. Hope this helps somebody.

Great video, brother. I've been experiencing the shaking & couldn't figure out what it was. after getting new tires, wheel alignment, tune up incl the usual oil change, new plugs, new wires, new distributer cap & rotor, fuel filter, air filter... it was still shaking, all be it, not as bad. just removed the driveshaft & low & behold, smooth ride. Now I've got to try to tackle the little u-joint & get my 4 wheels back. Thanks for the vid.

I don't understand how a drives haft yoke that is not designed to take a snap ring and I assume doesn't have a groove for it is able to take a snap ring? Does this particular joint use a different style than I'm used to?

Yes the replacement u-joint needs to come with clips. That is what I was worried about. My local auto parts stored don't have the u-joints. I was worried about getting the u-joint centered. The factory caps have no clips. Do I have to make sure that I get u-joints with the proper clips? On eBay they have the u-joints, and but do I need to look for u-joints designed to rebuild these drive shafts or do I simply get regular u-joints for these drive shafts?

It's not serviceable at a dealership because the labor cost would be too much.....they would want to replace all of the U-joints as well as the center carrier bearing to guarantee that you didn't have a vibration when you left. Who's to say that the prop shafts didn't lose a weight either. Cheaper to replace the entire driveshaft assembly at that point.

BackYard Tech What were the symptoms? Thanks
@DIYApprentice9 жыл бұрын
+Aaron L Vibration under load was my symptom. I originally blamed my replacement axles, but they are Raxles, so I figured something else was wrong. I removed the driveshaft and found that one joint was seized and the second was stiff. It doesn't take long to remove the driveshaft, but I'd support it with a jack to prevent damaging it on removal. BTW, I found a bad rear engine mount that was probably contributing to the vibration.
@aaron___60149 жыл бұрын
Yep, I inspected the u-joints and found a lot of play in the driveshaft. Replaced the u-joints and the vibrations under load are nearly gone. Also, the rear motor mount was completely broken. Thanks

Never Ever put grease in the cup holes of the shaft or yoke . Just clean as you did and press them in . You definitely don't want the cups to move after installation. DRY IS GOOD , MAKES FOR A TIGHT FIT !
@bushmaster29363 жыл бұрын
Relax, It's a press fit. There certainly won't be enough grease in the holes to make the caps slide around in the opening after installation. If that were the case, then the yoke holes would already be too worn out to hold the cups...more than likely they would be out of round as well. SMFH
