I removed the driveshaft from my 1997 CR-V about a year ago because of rusting u-joints; I finally got around to replacing the u-joints. I had to grind down a second plug I bought for my ball joint press so I could press out the old u-joints and press in the new joints. I used a Drexel to smooth the holes then I applied some bearing grease to help the caps slide in easier. C-shaped clips were tapped into place to secure the u-joints.
@DebtFreeCars9 жыл бұрын
You purchased the wrong type of U-joint. You can get U-joints that have clips on the interior side of the yoke. Just grind the stake points smooth and slide the U-joint cups in and clip them in.

I really appreciate for your time. I have Honda pilot 2011. I was trying to change but the same thing happened to me. There is no way I can do it except buying new one.
@EddieCarrara14 жыл бұрын
Hi Tami, some trollers say it can be done, so I gave it my best shot. Unless you replace the yolk on the propeller shaft it would be impossible. Sure, I could jam it in there then stake it, but I really didn't want my u-joint exploding while my kid was driving on the highway. Thanks for your feedback 😊
@jeffwalker49297 жыл бұрын
staked are replaceable - I clean out the yokes and press on the new joint, then I use washers that are the same size as the bearing cap, set the preload on the bearings, and set the washer on top the cap, and give it 4 small welds with the MIG. Works great! And saves the drive shaft!

Hi Eddie, Great channel! Thanks for all the good information you provide.I have a 2006 Gen 2 V, and have a few questions. How is that Dorman drive shaft holding up? Are the U joints replaceable on the Dorman drive shaft?
@EddieCarrara13 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks KD7 I appreciate the feedback 😊. The U-joints held up for for 45k miles with no issues, then we upgraded that CR-V. The U-joints were replaceable on the Dorman shaft, but I highly recommend you inquire about that information on the one you're buying because I'm not sure if all of them are like mine. Keep me posted on what you find out, thanks.

How does aftermarket vs the honda OEM shaft compare? Does it matter which one I buy?
@EddieCarrara15 жыл бұрын
If your vehicle is older I recommend an aftermarket driveshaft like Dorman. Honda driveshafts are 3 time the price.

God love it.. How much did you make to say you have to get a complete driveline. You can get internal locking u joint and you can replace it with a Rockford 430-9a. Or send it to me. I'll replace and return it less than a new driveline. Message me for details

I didn't get paid Tracy, I was just sharing my experience. I also was saving my viewers time and frustration because if the average DIY mechanic spends a couple hours replacing the joint and $60 on parts, then it blows up driving 60 mph down the highway because the yoke was worn they wouldn't be very happy. Hopefully someone contacts you to replace one for them and you can make a video of how it's done so you can help out other viewers. Thanks for sharing 🍻

so in other words, Honda wants you to spend nearly 300 to 500 dollars instead of just paying 25 bucks to replace the part? what the hell
@DIYApprentice8 жыл бұрын
Ohio Against The World You can buy aftermarket u-joints that will work for the CR-V. You need a press or a large punch to get them out and to install the new u-joints.
@OhioOwns8 жыл бұрын
***** can definitely manage that. appreciated, because it's really about to go, I can tell.
@OhioOwns8 жыл бұрын
bad rattling going down the highway. thought it was out-of-line at first, but it has to be the u-joints.
@DIYApprentice8 жыл бұрын
Ohio Against The World I used a ball joint press with a plug tip I shaved to fit on top of the caps and through the ear holes - worked well and is potentially less damaging then using a punch. You can remove the driveshaft and just run in front-wheel drive "mode" if it gets really bad. Also, the service manual recommends marking the orientation of the shaft to the transfer assembly flanges before removing the driveshaft so it's reinstalled in the same position.
@OhioOwns8 жыл бұрын
***** that's goddamn brilliant, really. i'm going to do it the same exact way if it's a tried & true method, because i'm def not paying a garage 200 to put on a 25 dollar part. the rubber bearings are wearing off insanely fast too, don't know if that's because of the movement of the tire from the u-joint going out or what but I gotta grab some of those while i'm at it. thanks, man, it's really appreciated.
