Teqo7 never did one before. I have only put a timing belt on an engine that was out of a car on an engine stand. I guess when I have that experience It will be more like nothing lol

Well, it is because Mr Kilmer choosen an easy engine to do it. I have an 1998 ford contour and i had to take out the camshaft cover, wires and spark plugs off, and had a hard time taking off some pulleys, in order to reach a f*king screw, and the water pump pulley had three screws. Besides, i had to lift the engine to unscrew a motor mount, take off the antifreeze tank and so. Then i had to align correctly both camshafts with the crankshaft, lock it up, unscrew and tight. A real pain in the ass, and everything done in the outdoors and during winter time.

When i do a timing belt, I don't just replace the timing belt but also the other stuff like the tensioner, waterpump and other pulleys. If one of those parts seizes, the timing belt will break and you may have to pull the head off

I don't recall it making any noise. I replaced it for preventive maintenance, knowing a failure could not only leave me stranded but also ruin the engine. Back in 1988 I had a timing belt break on a 4 cylinder engine in a Ford Pinto. There was no noise warning me it was soon to fail.

After rotating 2 times by hand, ensure that the paint marks all match up again. If not, the belt has skipped a tooth somewhere and will need to be repositioned.

you have to make the automatic tensioner be in the loosest position, then feed the belt on the crank at the bottom and work all the way around the pulleys, keeping the slack part on the tensioner side so it gets tight when you loosen it back up

Timing chains break sometimes, too. This happened to me on an 85 Toyota pickup, an $800 repair. I decided to replace the one in my 90 Dodge Dakota DIY. I was told the chain on it would be more robust than the Toyota, which was more like a bicycle chain. However, the Dodge had 192,000 miles. The old chain had some play in it, but the new one is nice and snug. The motor is quieter, too. If it weren't for a little lifter noise, it would be pretty quiet for an American made truck.

Pulleys. They are usually included in timing belt kit. Kit usually includes : Belt, tensioner pulley, water pump and one more little pulley (no idea what's it's real name is)

+Michael Hendrix For Japanese cars (especially the older ones) its a fast thing to do. Experienced mechanics with right tools do it in 1 hour, some even faster (like this guy). For some other cars its a harder job and even experienced mechanics might have to spend 2-3 hours to it.

reset it correctly, and be sure to get the slack when you do that in the belt to be slack at the tensioner pulley. Otherwise tightening the pulley will often move the cams a couple teeth off

Makes it look so easy...when I was a young mechanic I had a car (believe it was a chrysler 2.7, FWD) with a bad water pump. Had never even heard of a timing driven water pump at the time. It was a Sunday, so a couple of us less experienced guys were on duty(the A Techs had most weekends off...hell, they earned it). Car comes in on the hook and we and the rokkie advisor take it in figuring its a water pump...how bad can it be? Well...when I was tearing it down when I first heard/saw those four cams (V6 DOHC) snap into a different position I knew I had screwed up. This was in 2008 and me and that car are still married to this day... 😆

Yep that's what most people think until the loose chain wears a hole in the timing cover and either causes an oil leak or worse causes coolant to leak into the oil destroying your engine. Both designs have thier issues. Neither are maintenance free.

I suppose he did not explain at length the importance of the markings and how they can affect the timing internally if one places the belt incorrectly. By marking the spot it just makes it easier to get it right when placing the new belt, takes the guess work out of the equation and besides he mentioned that you should do a dry crank of the engine to make sure pistons are not hitting the valves above. if you haven't done one yet.. do it.. it's good experience. One tip is to transfer the marks from the old belt to the new belt, it helps a lot.

So you measure the marks from the old one against the new? Maybe with chalk marking or a white paint marker?

@@TheLondonCyclist Yes.. not chalk, I used a paint marker from home depot. Then you just place the new belt on top of the old one, transfer them over. Use a locking tool for the cam shaft as mentioned and the trickiest part is getting it past the tensioners. a new tensioner should come with a pin that holds it in the retracted position, that makes it easier, then pull the pin out once everything is lined up.

anyone with tools can change a timing belt, however, it's a part that's too sensitive. if you put the timing belt 1 inch off you could blow your whole engine. i just leave it to the pros to do that. im not risking buying a whole new engine that could cost over $1,000

Yes that is for honest mechanics, last time I was at the Honda dealer for a oil change because they had specials, the shop came up with over $3000 worth of repair that had to be done right away, They did not know I am a mechanic with 40 years of experience.

Try comparing to Germany, or further south, with honest differences in price level & general living standards for lower education levels..

jack it up in the air, bank one is the left side of the engine when you are standing in front of the engine with the fan belts in front of your. It bolts on the exhaust for that side

Just changed mine with normal house hold tools ... the pully came off easily, didnt need a puller ... for the pulley bolt i used your other video and used the trick with the starter - it worked beautifully!!! ...... i didnt even use a breaker bar, although having one would have made it easier ... thanks scotty

Amr Nabil I was quoted no less than $1100 for the job on mine, for just $300 worth of parts (water pump, tensioner, pulley, actual belts) so I said hell no and started gathering parts to do it with my mechanic friend down the road on a rainy day

Jon Clarkson everyone should own a basic tool set. Its better safe than sorry even at that having a set of sockets and socket wrench isnt much.

WOW. Scott- you are super. It only takes 4 minutes to replace timing belt. The shop charged me 4 hours labor. I discovered the car is ready less than 2 hours when I arrived earlier to the shop. The shop didn't call me when it's done. Wish I saw this youtube earlier.

thanks! as soon as i can get my hands on those tools i will try this using your advice! i was told by a tow truck guy (it was a dark night) that i had an "interference" engine.. i also saw some websites that said the '98 avalon had the interference engine. im hoping they are wrong since i've been told that makes a huge difference in repair price.

Of course it's meant to be amateurish Martin Thompson, as Scotty is explaining to your average joe out there, not instructing a bunch of top notch mechanics. I do all my own mechanical work and timing belts etc, and found Scotty to be not only informative, but also fun to watch. I assume it started before, and many things can go wrong, check for broken wires or sensors. And put the engine back at TDC and see if the crank marks line up now, cause sometimes they slip with a new belt put on.

Just spent 2000 pounds on a BMW 5 F10 (N47) for a chain kit and oil pump replacement from a back street mechanic in Belfast UK. Scotty is very correct by always telling us that BMW's and Merc's are money pits. Love all of the Scotty Vids.

Never tried those, most gloves I've gotten worked fine, except they tend to fall apart with use on oil and gasoline messes. So I normally wear the latex throw away kind.
