I did this job today and I was able to remove the leftover RTV gasket material easily by spraying the area with brake cleaner and then using a battery terminal type metal brush specifically for this purpose (don't use the brush you use on the battery terminals..get another brush..a pack of 5 is cheap at Autozone) to easily remove the material without risking gouges to the cover which is a risk with razors....

Thank you for the video. I did just like you taught in the video and everything went well. I added a few things to your explanation like, numbering the spark plug wires because I am not too familiar with the numbering by memory but everything else was done perfectly fine. Car is working like a champ and no Oil leak. Thank you

What about the 1/2 moon plugs? I did my valve cover gasket 6 months ago on my 1999 2.2 and nothing leaked until just now, I have a slight leak coming from the bottom of the driver's side 1/2 moon plug. They gave me 2 news ones in the gasket kit but, I did not use them and now I have to do the job over. Oh well, not a bad job...I used this video for when I did it the first time and, I also used both of your timing belt replacement videos when I did mine 3 months ago. Excellent videos Sir. Very helpful.

On mine the repair manual stated the the little notch on the spark plug seals should be facing towards the timing belt side of the cover. I didn't know this the first time I did this and I noticed later that oil was leaking into my tubes. I turned the seals so the little notch was facing towards the timing belt and I.m not sure if this was the actual reason for the oil in the tubes, but since then I haven't seen any oil at all... Must be a reason they say to install them this way, so maybe that was why they leaked... And I'm not sure if your year even has the same set up... Sure looks exactly the same...

i was wondering today what that notch was i faced them to the front of the car guess its time to go point them towards the passenger side. I also didn't use any rtv when putting on the new gasket. Think it will leak?

Try using a small toothbrush size wire brush after spraying the brake clean on the head where the gasket mates. Also on the inside of the valve cover where the valve cover gasket goes in. Spray brake cleaner and use small wire brush. Dollar tree has three in a package for $1.25👍👍

They aren't supposed to be loose but they're not supposed to be very tight either all the 30 mm nuts are is just hold the cover on torque them too tight and you could crack the cover.
@savannahtraderful
@savannahtraderful 4 жыл бұрын
Those washers on top have a rubber seal under them to prevent oil from leaking on top of the cover or into the top of the spark plug tubes. If the seals are clean there's no leakage. The spark plug tubes often leak from the bottom of the tube. The spark plug wire may have oil on it which indicates a leaking tube. You can remove the tube, apply sealant to the tube threads and reinstall to fix that.

Nah..! You should also get 1 or 2 liters of kerosene or diesel fuel and clean out the subtle but critical BAFFLES secreted in the top of the cover. Those allow for gas venting and they often get gunked up and blocked. Dump the cleaning fluid in there, then tip the cover back and forth until the stuff that pours out is no longer dirty. All the rest of your advice was fantastic, though.

Hey man, when you pulled out all the spark plug ignition wires, in a heap at once. You should have number'd each plug wire. so when reassembled they are in the correct spark plug. Note? the length of the wire doesn't matter. The correct fireing order sequence does

on top of the alternator is a cable bracket that breaks easily. it should fall behind the exhaust covering, past the pipes, waving goodbye to the oil filter as it falls to the floor. Hopefully. Otherwise it will make a stinky smell as it melts on the exhaust pipes as it gradually burns into nothingness. Nothing should be hurt by its passing.
