The Fixer it is gonna help me too. I am replacing my front and side entry doors. I am waiting till they come in then I’m doing it. Hopefully the doors are the right size. Well the actual doors are. I’m talking about the jambs and rough opening. My contractor that I always use said it would be no more than $500 unless they ran into problems. That is a lot of money to hang a couple of doors. It’s been over 15 years since I replaced three doors on my house, sure could have used this video as a training aid. Most of my information I learned from This Old House and other shows like it. Original doors were just old enough to need replacement and the previous owners had them painted black, with a glass storm door, talk about overheating the space in between.. Built a new shed with a service door, that one went in a lot easier because of new construction. Nice video.

Sealing with foam around the sides and top. You said you don't do it. Your reasoning is most likely about water infiltration. The reason we seal all around the door and window today is because we now know that a major source of heat leakage is due to air movement. Yes, that's why you tape and seal around the perimiter. You should have used a tyvek like tape to tape down the exposed tyvek paper. It's just a good practice to do. Low expansion window and foor foam is absulutely the industry standard for sealing gaps around doors and windows. Your reasoning about bulging is based on regular high expansion foam being used in the wrong places. Yes, foam around doors and windows. Loosely packed insulation is the next best thing. Not jammed in too tightly. Also when putting in the large screws through the shims, use a drill to pre-drill a pilot hole through the shim, so that the big screw doesn't crack it.

Excellent video, you did not appear to miss a step. There were no mystery steps taken, that the viewer didn't actually see you do in real-time. My exterior door and frame are out of plumb 3/8-1/2 inch. Because the frame is out of plumb too, I think that the jack stud has leaned because of settling. Good video! I have a few recommendations. Always place your shims on top of your screws, just so the shim won’t crack and fall when fastening I work for a well known door manufacturer, and I am certified door installer, most door manufacturers require to use either a elastomeric or polyurethane sealant over silicone, there are so many different wood species and composites that silicone will not adhere to. Keep in mind when placing screws behind the weatherstrip , you are fastening thru the thinnest part of the jamb. Door manufacturers recommend fastening thru The thickest part of the jamb, ( could be problematic for warranty purposes ) understand doing so would mean the installer would need to take extra steps in covering the screw holes and paint to match. Never ever only fasten through the brick mould. Always use the long screws supplied for the hinges and secure through the jamb. A well sealed and secured door will last for many years.
