How to replace an Ideal Standard bottom entry fill valve

So this valve broke again, I only replaced it in the summer last year. I got another one from Screwfix (for about £10) and decided to document how I did it this time. Just because.
My loo is an Armitage Shanks 'Sandringham' close-coupled toilet, I imagine there are quite a few toilet like this across the world. The part that I am replacing is called an 9.5inch (that's the height) bottom fill valve from Ideal Standard (same company as Armitage Shanks).
It's easy enough to do this if you follow instructions but if you are at all uneasy go ahead and call for a plumber!
Most important thing to remember is TURN OFF THE WATER SUPPLY and empty out the water out of the cistern before you unscrew the inlet hose...

I was terrified of doing this but I followed your lovely clear video and it worked perfectly. Would never have dared do it if your video hadn't helped me. Most difficult bit was undoing the white nut under the cistern. It's so narrow for getting a grip on, so much easier if it was deeper. The current SV81767 does look very slightly different with a black float but works just as efficiently. One tip. When finished try adding a little water to the cistern from a jug before turning on the mains, so you can check if the rubber washer is water tight before connecting up to the mains, mine wasn't the first time!

Good video, we have the same toilet and have similar problems, it's worth noting you can remove the top of the valve by twisting it off, you can then remove the black rubber seal clean everything then put it back together and it will 9 times out of ten fix the problem, saves a bit off money and time...

@@sloooog Same here ☹️ I wonder if builders fit toilets deliberately in that way as a 'favour' to plumbers to stop us doing cheap DIY plumbing jobs ourselves, meaning we need to use a plumber. Just a thought... Mind you I don't even know how a plumber will be able to access the underneath of my toilet cistern 🤔

Nice video!! I changed diaphragm but still got a small leak so the whole unit will need to be changed. Adjusting the fill level if lever stops flow?

Hi, is there anyway you can replace this inlet valve if the system has been concealed by tiling? I can turn the water off at the mains but cannot get to the back part of the toilet to unscrew the water pipe which connects to the valve? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I just did all that and the toilet still doesn't shut off. Faulty new fill valve I guess.

If it's still running into the pan it could be a worn out flush valve or the rubber washer on it that needs changing.

walkwitmeh427 I agree. This wad my 3rd time changing it. Which is why if you can't be bothered getting a new toilet it's good to know how to change them...

@@linaelvira Sorry I phrased that badly. I meant what about trying these options as they are meant to be better for avoiding the problem of cross threading. The brass shank provides a better fit than the plastic. I am grateful for the video but I cannot access the nut and plastic locking nut under the pan because whoever installed the boxing in of the pipework didn;t provide a removable panel so I will have to take the tiles off. Shame, as we don't have anymore tiles to replace (the company went bust).
