I got code P1130 on my 2000 Lexus ES300 which is running 1MZ-FE engine as the one shown in this video so I needed to replace Bank 1 Sensor 1 air fuel ratio sensor. I did not want to get to it from underside because though it's located low but not low enough and also there is a cross beam that's obstructing access to it from underneath so I decided to attack it from top/driver side. I sprayed ton of WD 40 and ran engine for 10 minutes. Let engine cool for an hour so I wouldn't get burned. I am blessed with a pair of small hands so with a 7 dollar 22 mm open ended wrench from Home Depot, I loosened old sensor and tightened new sensor through the narrow gap between engine and firewall and with my left hand through a small gap adjacent to the throttle body I disconnected old connector and reconnected new connector. I was doing all this with my upper body flat on engine bay and doing it by total "feel" but what helped me was that I had removed/replaced the Bank 2 Sensor 1, the easy one, not every long ago so I knew what to expect when I was "feeling" my way around....I would suggest that if anyone needs to replace Bank 1 Sensor 1, you might well as well replace Bank 2 Sensor 1 first. If one fails the other one would fail soon after....Most of us usually would replace a pair of headlights at the same time, not just the left headlight or right headlight, right?

If you have skinny arms this is super easy to change from the top, no need to jack the car up. I just got this car and this was the first time ever working on it, took 10 minutes to change this part from the top. I just removed the air intake resonator (black plastic box on big intake hose). Then I snaked a can of Kroil oil (with red tube on it) through there down to where the sensor is located, (use PB Blaster or whatever if you don't have Kroil). Then I re-positioned my arm to spray down the old sensor to hopefully penetrate the threads some (reach down through where you removed the plastic box). Then wait a bit for oil to penetrate some, while you're doing that reach down and unplug the old sensor, I had enough room to get both arms in there to make it easy. Then I used same kind of 02 socket as in this video and removed old sensor. Once that was out applied a bit of anti-seize to new sensor and just did the reverse of everything above. Might be wise to check and make sure new plug on new sensor is same as old one before removing everything, I did and it was a match. Total time was about 10 minutes for this job, I did it in a parking lot in 95 degree weather. Would have taken me longer than that just to drag out a jack, jack stands and all that nonsense not to mention crawling under the damn car. Now, if you have big Popeye arms this method may not work for you, but if you're skinny like me I really think this is the way to go as this was a super easy job. Of course I didn't run into any problems like stubborn connector or seized 02 sensor, everything went smooth. YMMV.

Great video thanks for posting-this saved me $400 at the shop. I found it easier to replace it from the top driver’s side. Unless you have enormous arms or hands you should be able to perform this service just fine from the top. Old one was 20 years old, so a small shot of penetrating oil helped tremendously to get it off. 7/8” box wrench or crescent wrench will get this off and the new one on. Thanks again for posting!

I have a 2001 Lexus es300. I plan on keeping this car forever. Just replaced timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, drive belts, tensioners, etc. There is no other car advertised with the same luxury and condition of this car for sale under 25k. Anything I can actually afford has twice the mileage and morethanlikely needs 5-6 thousand dollars of work. I was smart enough to have this work done at a Toyota Dealership. I saved a cool 800.00 on per hour charges not having the work done at a Lexus dealer. Anyway, my check engine light has always come on after a few hundred miles of disconnecting the battery to clear the computer. Unfortunately this trick does not work for emissions purposes. There must be data in the computer for the test to be performed. I picked up a hand held scanner I now use to erase the codes which of course turns off the check engine light. The codes point to oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, and the like. This car never runs like there is a problem with the engine. It idles smoothly and is as fast as my 1985 Corvette. I would like to change the oxygen sensors one at a time to see if the check engine light stops coming on. The left bank and lean, rich adjustment are controlled by these sensors. Too bad a screw driver and a good ear don't work anymore to accomplish this. Those were the good old days...

@@thelovelyannise6623 Ok, so now I understand the confusion. An A/F sensor, which just means air/fuel sensor, is basically the same thing as an O2 sensor. Some manufacturers call them A/F sensors and some call them O2 sensors. A/F sensors tend to have a wider range of measurement and are sometimes referred to as wideband O2 sensors. Interesting. That part absolutely shows as correct for the downstream sensor on a 1998 Lexus ES300. But this wouldn't be the first time they were wrong. You sure this is the downstream O2 sensor you are trying to replace? Where exactly is the O2 sensor you are trying to replace located?

Hi Clint by any chance do you know where I can find coolant fan sensor on my 98 es300,also cooling fan switch? do you have pics, video diagram
@ClintHolland7 жыл бұрын
The switch is on the thermostat housing on the drivers side intake manifold. If you are looking at the radiator cap from the passenger side of the vehicle, the ECT is just down and to the left of the cap.

I have a 96 Lexus GS 300. I need to change the 02 heater circuit sensor 1 and am having a difficult time trying to find it. Is this 98 model the same as the 96?
@ClintHolland7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it is not. The 97-01 are pretty much the same but the 96 isn't. I hate to state the obvious but it's somewhere in the exhaust. Maybe start at the rear exhaust and follow it back to the engine, looking for the sensor.

That can be pretty normal. Do you have any evidence that it is actually overheating other than the light on the dash? It could be your temperature sensor is broken and not correctly reporting the temperature.

If you are under the car by the oil pan you see sensor next to it , that is bank 1 sensor 2 , from there follow that converter look up, there's another sensor that's bank 1 sensor 1 ( upstream) or you stand by passenger side wheel look down you'll see it little bit hard to get hands in there .. if you stand up in middle front of the car you see one sensor right next exhaust header that is bank 2 sensor 1 ( upstream ) from there go down is bank 2 sensor 2 ( downstream)

Clint, just to verify. I understand that one is upstream and downstream. I have a 1999 Lexus es300, and my error codes are P1133 and P1153. So my question is, both bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1 require the same part?
@ClintHolland6 жыл бұрын
They sure are These are both upstream sensors. The only different one is Bank 1 Sensor 2, which is the downstream, heated sensor.

Does the timing belt look ok? This can be caused by several different things from the timing belt, a defective starter, problems with the water pump, or just an issue with the sensor or its wiring.

O2 sensors are 22mm, not 7/8... just for future reference or anyone else planning on doing this at home.
@ClintHolland5 жыл бұрын
True. But many if not most O2 sensor removal sockets actually list their size as 7/8 and the actual difference between a 7/8 and 22mm is 9 thousandths of an inch which is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. And many times, depending on the age and corrosion of an O2 sensor, you will actually have to drop down to a 21mm or 13/16 socket to get a tight fit. But now I am just being pedantic. Thanks for watching.

What you posted is Bank 1 Sensor 1. (Sensor mounted before one of the three catalytic converter). Bank 1 Sensor 2 must be located after catalytic converter. (I believe on my own research through googling it).
