Left out were some specific instructions recommended by Volvo service manuals, which if not followed could lead to problems with keyless locks, sunroof, and climate control or other systems whenever you disconnect or change the battery. The following sequence is what Volvo specifies whenever you dis/reconnect battery Turn everything off. Radio, all ECC functions to off (fan speed, AC etc, heated seats etc...) -Wait 5+ min after key is out to make sure everything in the car is off and completely shut down. -Disconnect negative terminal . If replacing the battery, continue to remove positive terminal, remove and install new battery, reconnecting positive cable first. -When you are ready to fully reconnect the battery: -Insert key and switch to position II -Reconnect negative terminal -Turn the key to off -Lock and unlock door (reset upper cabin electronics, without this step, your sunroof/homelink may not work) -Now set your clock When the battery is connected, the headlights and various electronics will power on instantly. This feels weirdcompared to most cars but it is the proper procedure on this car according to the factory service manual. Even when following the above procedure to the letter, my Volvo's wipers came on when I reconnected the negative cable with key turned to position 2. This was resolved after removing the key to lock and unlock doors, then re-inserting key to start car normally.

I told my son to leave the battery disconnected to reset the system and now nothing will power on. Any suggestions?

Thank you for posting this reply. I just changed the battery in my 2007 XC70 and followed these instructions to the letter and there haven't been any issues, no need to find the radio code either, everything saved. Just a heads up for anyone who is doing this in the future, most likely you will get some sparks when you connect the negative cable to the new battery, this is normal, just tighten it down and you are good.

The OEM radio resets when you replace the battery and you need to re-enter the code, or the radio bricks. Code may be written on the radio or may be available from dealership if you can provide VIN.

The battery has TWO vent holes - one on each side. The other "spare" plug you put in your old battery should have been used to plug the unused left side hole in the new battery. Now corrosive/flammable acidy vapours will escape into the boot. Also got a bit of a fright when you moved the battery by pulling on the terminal with the connector as leverage. It is not designed for that stress and could cause leakage from the base of the post. Thanks for the vid anyway; now I know I can fit a larger battery and a tractor battery is all I have so that was helpful. Cheers

Ya the missing bolt is a 14mm !!! I changed my battery yesterday , 10mm 13mm & 14mm , They could not have made it more complex if they tried , The only thing i had to reset was the clock as my Radio has no anti theft code , One great thing about the designed space is that it can can take THE Biggest batteries ....BRILLIANT

Thank you! This will be my first battery replacement on this model of Volvo. Didn't even know where the battery was until I tried to give a jump start to someone at one point. Was shocked about the trunk placement -- reading that in the owner's manual. There are some parts to this I've never encountered with replacing batteries (the vent / hose -- weird). Thanks for showing all of that! Also I do like that the battery can be "upgraded" which I plan to do as I've had issues with cold starts and the current battery. Thanks again.

Hello I buy parts for my Volvo XC 90 from 1 A auto. Very nice video to follow and very easy. However my question is was there any need to restart anything reset anything because I see all these videos on KZbin about how changing your battery could cause problems. Do I need to keep the key in the ignition for the Volvo XC90 ? Or can o just replace the battery like how she did it ?

Spray is nice, but an application in the trunk can get away with some dielectric grease (always a good idea).

A constant charge must be added to avoid any other costs and inconveniences such as radio code error or key fob failure etc. This is added by attaching a separate power supply (battery or charge pack) to the terminal points (battery or engine) while the battery terminal points are disconnected. Any competent modern mechanic will be aware of this issue.

About to change the battery on my 2007 XC70. So in order to do this, I would attach my lithium jump starter to the engine bay pos terminal and the neg to metal and THEN remove the battery and replace? First time I've changed on a Volvo, I don't want to mess up the radio, etc. Thank you

Only one suggestion, always wear safety glasses when working with the batteries just in case. You can use the anti-corrosion washers. I was watching this to see if it showed how to recode the radio.
