Robert, thanks. This is a perfect example of the kind of videos you produce that allow me to service my Volvo 850 with confidence. The great thing is that no matter how long ago you made a video, it's still totally relevant as we try to keep our 850's not only on the road, but reliable as well.

I purchased my battery at AutoZone. I was disappointed when I was told that the bolts used to secure it couldn’t be reached. I raced over to Morgan’s Tire to see if they could do it. They could, but I’d have to come back the following day as they wouldn’t get to it on this day. So, I figured I’d check out KZbin to see if I could do it myself. Thanks to Robert, I got to see that I could do this easily. Sure enough, it was a piece of cake. I don’t know why AutoZone couldn’t do it (maybe they had a lazy person go out to assist me). Thanks Robert!!!!

robert, can you explain what the secondary positive terminal cable, more like bundle of cables, is? is it a main cable, or auxiliary ?
@RobertDIY

B cable. It takes power from the battery to the fuse box. It can be 1 wire but Volvo decided to make it a wire bundle.

The battery in there looks smaller that what the tray can accommodate. It looks like there is still a notch available to the left to lock down a larger battery with the quick release tab. Am I wrong? When I google batteries for that automobile, some slightly wider ones comes up.

correct, you can install different size batteries however the recommended size is 47 or 48.

Firstly, thank you for the excellent videos. The question I have is, if I do not wish to wait until my battery gives out completely and not able to start the car, how can I determine when the end is near? I've been monitoring the voltage when I'm about to start the car, as well as when cranking. Currently these values are at about 12.1 and 9.2 volts and higher. In your experience, how low is starting to get much too low? Thanks
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Eric T that is great. You usually get a warning when it's going bad. Another thing that you can do is have it tested twice per year. Spring and fall would be best.
@blissfulness4ever
@blissfulness4ever 8 жыл бұрын
Isn't it true though, that often at the point when the load test indicates replacement, the battery could actually still go on for quite a while?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Eric T Yes. Due to my employment situation I usually purchase bad batteries and use them for about 2 years.

Hello Robert, I have a volvo s70 (1997) and it keeps discharging the battery completely when its parked for 3-4 days. The battery seems to be still rechargeable but one should also not forget that is almost 3-3.5 years old. I checked the cables with a multimeter and it is not shorted too. What do you think it is time to change the battery or shall I bring the car to an auto electrician? Thank you and all the best.

Need to have a draw test done to see what's going on. You can check the alternator by disconnecting it over night.

This might be a bit off topic, but I have had a problem for some time with my S70. The battery drains completely empty after a few days after recharged. I have checked if there's anything on that might drain it and I have removed the battery and let it stay for a few days to make sure it's not the battery itself. Have you encountered anything like this or have any suggestions on what it might be?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+CroxyDaddy Huh? Have you had the battery checked? Are you saying that the battery dies even when you disconnect it? If you disconnect the battery, only disconnect the negative side.
@CroxyDaddy

@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 2 ай бұрын
Connect it, close all of the doors, and lock and unlock it. That should turn the alarm off. I've seen some 850s do that. Not sure if it's by design or a defective part. I think a '97 960 I had use to do it as well.
