Thanks for this video! I've been having a lot of car problems lately and didn't want to put my car back in the shop. My positive terminal got corroded to the point of preventing my car from starting. Following this guide, I replaced both terminals myself without too much hassle. The only thing I did differently was using a hacksaw to cut off the old terminals because my car's power supply has too many cords to cut through with a wire cutter. I also used a utility knife and scissors to strip some of the wire coating. Thanks!

TheDIYGuyDOTnet thanks alot man. 😀😎👍 my car stop in the middle of the road while I was driving it. I thought the the battery died or I must've had a bad alternator. Someone came to help me. He let me know that I had bad terminals. My terminals were about like 20 years old and really worn down and corroded. I bought new ones, got them changed and my car doesn't have that problem anymore. I found out the importance of having good terminals. I'm so glad I didn't go to the mechanic for that issue. They would have hustled me. I would've ended up wasting my money.

Great tutorial. At 6:10 you are touching the "positive" terminal/lug and not getting shocked. I've done this many times myself and never been shocked. In fact I've never met or heard of anyone ever getting shocked by a car battery. I'm also an electrician by trade and still don't understand why we don't get shocked when we touch the positive terminals on car batteries. If we were to touch the "positive" wire in a home circuit, there's a very good chance of getting shocked, it's happened to me dozens of times at least. I wonder if you or someone else can help me understand this phenomenon better. Thanks!
@creepyclown75472 жыл бұрын
I think it might be because batteries are a Direct Current, and the electricity in our houses are Alternating Current.
@c31979839 Жыл бұрын
It's due to the voltages involved. Household voltages are minimum 120V. When you take the resistance of your body into account, it's easy for current to flow throigh you. Now if you consider a car battery, the voltage is 12-15V. Now if your bodies resistance is the same, there is barely any current able to flow throigh your body, therefore no shock. It has nothing to do with whether it's AC or DC current, its all to do with the voltage difference.
@Rick-the-Swift Жыл бұрын
@@c31979839 The lower voltage would make sense why we aren't jolted. Still, if 12V can crank a car's starter, why do we use a minimum 120V just to turn something like a pudding mixer in our kitchen? My guess is perhaps for convenience, meaning it's easier to have a few receptacles in a home which handle a wide range of appliances than it would be to install many types of receptacles. I guess that would also in a sense simplify the requirements of the manufacturers as they know the only two types of power their products will encounter is either 100+V range or 200+v. But even if my hunch is correct, could the reason we have such high voltage in our homes have something to do with it being AC, and conversely, would the lower voltage of the car vehicle have to do with the power being DC?

I noticed that battery was a bit 'wobbly' it could be the bottom braces needed tightening up -- mine were metal and a bit had broken off so I had to adjust the battery so it didn't move. When travelling and going over bumps and the like, the terminals may (only may....) come loose with all of the juddering. My terminals did and I didn't realise the battery itself was loose until I got the plastic cover off the whole of the battery.
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet5 жыл бұрын
Yes, That is a good point to check your battery hold down to ensure its keeping the battery in place and that's not whats causing the battery terminals ends to become damaged. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment.

Do we need a precise size for the cutter/stripper tool? Or, can we get away with something smaller and just cut sort of "by feel" to avoid cutting wire when we want to only strip the insulation? Sorry for the newb question.
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet7 жыл бұрын
Chances are you won't get the correct size wire strippers you can use the biggest slot and do it by feel just cut enough cut though the jacket of the wire or enough to score it pretty good and you should be able to get it.

I used this same method on my truck. But since mine is a 2002 model the battery's are different nowadays thus making the slack in my terminal cables less so I had barley just enough to put the negative cable on. Do they make extensions or do you have to replace the whole terminal cable?
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
The cable end was molded in the end like this one? Ya nowadays they don't give you any extra. I would recommend replacing the cable. Some people have soldered or tinned the cables together and then used heat shrink to cover the wire.

I'm a 68-year-old woman, and I need to replace the terminals on my 1997 Mercury Tracer. I think I realize now that the terminal were my main problem, as opposed to the battery. I think I am willing to try to do this myself. The only tool I don't have is the tool to clean the posts and terminals. I went ahead and bought some new terminals, but they seem awfully cheap and thin. Is it not necessary to check the connections with a volt meter after the new terminals are installed and before you call it done? Sure need your help. Question; is it safe to mess with the positive whilst the ground is disconnected? Or do you need to connect the ground before messing with the positive?
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet6 жыл бұрын
You can just be sure that they don't hit the battery terminals as your moving them around.
@EurekaLove6 жыл бұрын
TheDIYGuyDOTnet I get that. Is there a specific order to disconnect/reconnect? You say not to let them touch the terminals or your tools, etc; but when you tighten the positive, you're using metal tools and your fingers. How can you do that safely?
@ImprezaRS20026 жыл бұрын
Make sure you start the way you finished, reconnecting the positive terminal first and then the negative afterwards to prevent short circuits. It is safe to touch with your hands or the tools. When I say that I mean don't let the tool touch the car at any point while it's touching the battery terminals as it will cause a short / it to arch.
