Listen! My cadillac is stranded now in a walmart parking lot for connective issues. I have a top and side post battery. I had someone replace the negative side to top but hey did not do the positive. The side connection is iffy. Can i get electrocuted for changing my positive cable to a top post adapter if i do this without the battery?

The wrench is usually 1/2 inch. I work for AAA, and I see these replacement all the time, so here is my input on this kind of battery terminal replacements so that they last for the life of the battery. First off, the terminals are coated/painted. That needs to be wire brushed off, or filed off where the cables have contact with the terminal. "Resistance". Another tip, that flat plate has indentations, if your cables are small, take that plate off and flip it around, it will be a tighter fit. Also if your using dielectric grease, use it on the under side of that plate too, it tends to rust. Personally, i use the anti corrosion felt washers that go around the battery posts. Also, dielectric grease is a non conductive silicone grease. NON CONDUCTIVE, do not put it on wires or electrical connections. its is meant to seal out moisture on spark plug boots, and light bulb sockets. If you do use it, just spareingly, as in vidio.

I've done this repair on many vehicles. The one difference in how I do it is to nix the dielectric grease on the wire so I can put Liquid Electrical Tape on any exposed copper. Especially on an off-road vehicle, this will help prevent premature corrosion on the exposed wire. Also, after cutting the circle around the wire, I make a slice down the cut piece to peal it off without pliers.

Thanks a bunch for this vid. Even though I'm a DIY'er, electrical stuff has always intimidated me. My 2009 Accord's positive clamp corroded through and needed replacement. The clamp was attached to a housing that made it impossible to easily remove, so I had to cut and stack like you did. The Honda stealership quoted me over $400.00 for the entire cable. Went to Advanced Auto and got a similar clamp to the one in your vid...cost me $6.50. Followed your instructions, but also had to loosen the cable clamps to provide more slack to stack the 2 cable wires. My wires were thicker than yours, but I managed to get them secured inside the new clamp. Question: there was a bit of wire still exposed from where I stripped the insulation. Is it ok like that, or should I wrap some electrical tape around it? Thanks again.

Actually I also replaced a transmission sensor as well. It’s the first time I’ve had to be my own DIY work. This video made my day. You didn’t need to start the car at the end. I started it and it worked. I knew this was the problem because my terminal was cracked. I would go and pick my son up from school and all of a sudden the car didn’t start. This was the solution.

Sears used to sell a very nice battery connector gel that made a good seal over the wires, post and terminal. it was like a very thick oil when you applied it but settled into something more like a non hardening silicon. It kept the corrosion from reforming, kept water and air out and was actually not to hard to remove. A lawn mower tech showed it to me and said it was the best stuff for keeping the connections in good working condition he had ever found.

I'm a little confused why these would need replacement. Sure it was dirty but the terminals didn't look mangled from what I could see. Was cleaning the contact points with a terminal/post cleaning brush insufficient to make solid contact? Or was it just cheap enough to replace you didn't bother trying to clean them? I'm thinking about replacing a terminal on my vehicle because its warping and I had trouble getting a socket over the nut to tighten the terminal down onto the post. But it didn't seem to me like their was anything wrong with your terminals other then dirty.

good clean job with the right tools. Just one thing you might want to suggest is the fact that sometimes the corrosion can go down the wiring. stripping back some of the wiring insulation and looking for that corrosion dust is a good idea. with new terminals and corrosion in the wiring you'll still have the same problem. I had to learn the hard way. thanks for posting the vid.

Future terminal changes are going to be 10 times easier.

Say, an important step before reassembly would be to clean both the post and new battery terminal with a wire brush battery cleaner. The connection between post and terminal should be bright clean and dry before reassembly. This is the final step any time I take a connection off for what ever reason before putting it back together.

This appears to be a misuse of the dielectric grease. Dielectric grease prohibits electrical flow. Clean your terminals, connect, and then use dielectric grease to cover the connection if you must, although I am not sure this is necessary but certainly better than prohibiting the electrical flow by putting it on the terminals before connection.

After having similar problems on 2 wranglers and finding the actual problem, your better off replacing both + and - battery cables from after market source. Mine was from a guy in AZ. If you cut the coating off you'll find corrosion inside the cables. Jeep cables are crap. Replacing just the terminals might give you a year but it's not enough. Trust me, you'll be shocked at the corrosion inside the cables. Also ground strap that connects to the hood is junk as well.

DIalectric grease is non-conductive. It's meant to seal and protect electrical components so in other words it's good to have it around and NOT where two conductive parts meet.

I’ve changed my battery and starter. This video was my story. Surprisingly, it only cost me $3. 5 mechanics looked at my car. Some even said it’s my transmission. Great video

Thank you so much I've been tapping on my terminals to get my Jeep to start the terminals are bad , they've been cleaned and scraped everything except changed...now I'm stuck at home waiting for someone to help me get these changed and this video made me more confident that I can do this myself, um does anyone have tools I can borrow? NO? Well I guess I'm still waiting on someone to come help me with the tool situation now...lol

The "battery post grease" that I have in my hand says DO NOT put the grease between the terminal and the battery post. It says to apply it all around on the outside of the connection to create a moisture barrier.

how do you remove them if the bolts been jammed in tight to where you can't get a socket wrench to remove them!?? we have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4 speed manual and its dead after just getting a brand new battery and will not hold the charge!

*Yo please help!* Up until yesterday I only knew how to jump a battery. Now Im in deep. Terminals are getting replaced and foolishly cut the negative wire without making sure it would still reach. Now its too short, can I take pliers and pull that copper wire further? Or do I need to get a whole new cable now? Id say im about 2.5” short from reaching the new terminal now

So my car is starting but cuts off after a few secs, I have a bad meg terminal, could this be the problem? It’s been like this for a while and if I would stay idle for too long it would cut off also so I would have to keep it in neutral while waiting at a light
