I show you how to replace both power steering lines on a 1998 S10 Blazer, this job requires an 18mm wrench, 1in wrench, 5/8 wrench, drain pan, 1/4in socket or screw driver for the hose clamps, some rags, wire brush, brake cleaner, new power steering fluid, a small piece of cardboard, and a new piece of braided hose for the return line.

Thanks for the wrench sizes. 18 mm is the only wrench I don't have for some reason.

For some reason, 18mm is very often missing from flare nut wrench sets, despite it's being a very common size on power steering hoses. My local Menard's sells flare nut wrenches in sets and individually, yet not a single 18mm could be found. I finally had to buy one from Amazon.

I replaced my power steering pump same vehicle for a new reman pump. Brand new high pressure line. New pulley. New belt tensioner. New serpentine belt. BLEEDING THE OLD FLUID OUT,,,, You can leave the low pressure hose disconnected to a bucket,, fill the power steering fluid in the reservoir,, disconnect the ignition coil,, bump the starter a bit,, and all the old crappy metaly fluid in the steerbox and system will get purged. Might add an in line filter on the low pressure hose as well providing its a high enough flow.

That's excellent advice! I've done that several times in the past when the fluid looked like burnt ass

How tight should I tighten the fittings? I’m having leaks on both fittings
@theman9764
@theman9764 6 ай бұрын
If i remember correctly, i believe there are o-rings on the ends of the fittings that should seal it up, and just snug em up, if you tighten too much you can damage the o-rings

When you bleed the lines for the power steering, do you mean let it run ,while turning the wheel, with the cap off?? And for how long? And when do you know when there’s no air in the lines?? Thanks for the video. It was the only one I found where the steps were clear and informative.
@theman9764
@theman9764 2 жыл бұрын
There's no exact method to it really, just top it off, run the engine and turn the wheels back and forth a couple of times, shut it off for maybe 5 min to let the air bubbles vent and then do it again, may take 2 or 3 tries before most of the air is burped out

Thanks for doing this. I'm having a hard time getting the line screwed in on the pump side. Any suggestions?
@theman9764
@theman9764 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that can be a difficult part to do because the lack of room, if the fitting has been cross threaded at all and partially tightened then you might have to remove the fitting on the back of the pump housing and try threading them together first and then installing it back onto the pump, also if it looks like the line isn't angled straight enough, you might try slightly bending the line so the angle works better for you, good luck!

Thanks for the video! I am replacing mine at the moment. The problem I’m having is the the high pressure line fitting on the gearbox is not biting the thread. The new part is Gates. Any trick to get it in sir?
@theman9764
@theman9764 2 жыл бұрын
Not really any special trick, it just has to be damn near perfectly lined up before the threads will grab, also try pulling up on the line while pushing down on the fitting, i don't know why or how that helps with starting the threads but it does

You're doing people a great disservice by NOT disclosing that your vehicle is the 2-wheel drive variety without tow package. The 4x4 versions have a huge cross-member under the steering gear that makes access to the back of that pump virtually *impossible*, and the return line circuit is totally different on units with tow pkg due to the p/s cooler. This video is yet another example of a subject not researched thoroughly enough.

Your complaint is yet another example of a whining troll. I have a similar 4x4 S10 with no access from the bottom. I would love to see YOUR video of how you handled the problem.

For those of you with a 4x4 S10 with no bottom access to pump, here is a link to a document which outlines the procedure for removing & installing the pump. Coupled with this excellent video, the document may be of help.
