How To Replace Cam Spring In Zippo Easy Way !

In this Video I go over how to easily change the cam spring in an antique or vintage zippo insert. With no power tools only used a small flat head screwdriver and needle noose pliers. Re-Used the the rivet I took out ! Anybody can do this at home.

I love this. This was great education for someone that wants to restore their insert instead of replace it. Try to keep your Zippos original with their matching inserts. Really like how the rivet looked when you were done. I dig the look with the bolt on the wheel. I got some of those tiny bolts, but I got them in brass. I am going to do a brass insert and do the brass wire wheel trick and brass coat a flint wheel then use a brass bolt to put in on. I might even try to brass coat the Cam. Great video, you got me wanting to work in the shop today doing Zippo stuff!

A zippo moment: I retired from the Navy and have owned many Zippo's. On the bottom of the case there are usually hash marks. ( something to due with manufacture date) All the sailors would insist on looking at all the zippo's for sale hoping to find one with four hash marks on the the bottom. These four hash marks were highly prized because they represented the old "four piper" destroyers of WW1/2 era. (four smoke stacks). If you had one...well then, you were an Old Salt.

I did it! Thank you Sir! 🙌🏼 I got my replacement cam spring locally (Indonesia), but I believe it was from China. New rivet included, but I decided to follow your guide and it worked well. To get the rivet out took a while and really need to use a bit of power. Patience really needed in reassembling the rivet and cam spring.. 😁 Next I want to try that Golden Wheel guide and put a screw on it! 😅

@@ZippoFanatic77 Years ago I was in a course where we used an acid to engrave images to metal surface. Can't remember the name of that technique tho, but I am sure there is some lessons online on how to do that. edit: I think the technique is etching. I think we called it "etsaus" in that Finnish course.

You can heat a spark wheel to cherry red with a MAP gas torch , quench it in water to reharden it , because steel can soften from prolonged heating and air cooling depending on structure., and make a simple copper wire rivet for the wheel and peen both sides. Throws sparks like mad dude

thanks for the video, I have this old slim zippo with the insert whose cam spring seems too short since every time I open and close the zippo the cam spring liberated itself from under the cam. SO the cam spring seems short or maybe just snapped of? any idea of the length of the cam spring? thanks

I have 1 caveat with this video after having just watched it and removed my 1st rivet and broken cam spring insert. You MAY be able to salvage the rivet, but you MAY NOT, as in my case. I fucking destroyed it in the process. Don't try to reuse the rivet. If you're taking the time to F with it, you might as well do it right. That is all.

Are the cam springs the same between the slim insert and the classic insert? I have a mid 70's insert that works great except for a broken cam spring. Also, do you do side work fixing inserts?

My son bought me a Zippo made in 2008. The cam spring finally broke. Deciding if I should send it to Zippo or get a spring and fix myself. I'm capable, just on fence how long and how much hassle it'll be to get someone else to fix. Be surprised how much I miss it in working order.

Zippo won't fix it. They will replace the insert with a new one. Insert won't match lighter anymore.

Hey - i have a question for ya! I have more lighter inserts than cases, since I got one of the rechargeable inserts, and that seems weird to me. I emailed Zippo to see if I could just buy a case, and they said they couldn't do that. I figure I'm over thinking this - what do you do with extra lighter inserts?

I gotta say you make this process LOOK A LOT EASIER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS. "When you do this you won't damage the top." BS. I've done this twice, under spring tension, btw, and destroyed the rivet both time and bent my chimney all to he'll. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE REPLACEMENT PARTS.
