How to: Replace Ford fuel filter (Mondeo Mk3)

Replacing the petrol filter is an easy enough job and the process shown is common to many Fords. The car featured has a Duratec HE 2.0 engine. Fuel filters should be replaced at roughly 50,000 km or 5 year periods, depending on the 'quality' of your local petrol.

I've just done this job on my identical car, and I also used a Mahle filter. I didn't remove the fuel pump relay (because I'm lazy), and less petrol came out of the filter and lines than in your video. I had exactly the same problem as you with the bracket. The washing up trick didn't work for me, and I could see that if I persisted, I would scratch the new filter. In the end, I put the filter into the bracket. Squeezed as hard as I could with my fingers, whilst lining up the holes with a small rod (a small screw-driver would work). Once aligned, I clamped with Mole grips, and then inserted the screw. Worked fine and didn't scratch the new filter as your method may have done with my bracket and filter. The filter that I replaced was the original 14 year old Ford item. My car has covered 54,000 miles. I took the opportunity to hacksaw the old filter to take a look inside. It did look pretty grubby in there, but the car was (and is) running fine, so this was a preventative measure. Thank you for your videos - they are really helpful. I changed my Mondeo thermostat recently, and my knuckles suffered less than they would have done without your thermostat video.

~50,000 km would be more than enough unless your petrol supply is really poor. I'm not sure what the Ford spec is, if anyone with a Mondeo owner's book could look it up that would be nice.

I actually have a Haynes Workshop manual that says every 50k miles (=about 80k km) or 4 years. I only was wondering whether you closely follow instructions or follow your own regime and by what rationale.

No. You just want no extant fuel pressure, hence starving the engine of fuel and letting it die by disabling pump beforehand.

On a Mk3 Mondeo? I haven't done it but I know you need to drop the fuel tank, which makes the answer "no". Unless you're willing to cut the car's body metal from the top and peel/hammer it back.

Why everyone is so afraid of petrol spilling out? It evaporates pretty quickly and its not harmful at all. Also I probably wouldn't lose much even if I don't relive pressure from fuel lines.

Hi Craig, I have the same model car and have scoured the internet for a problem I have with starting. So my car starts absolutely fine when facing slightly uphill, but when flat or downhill it has a weak start and I need to pump the gas pedal. Does anyone here have a suggestion. PS the car drives fine without any issue once started, also a new battery(good quality) recently. Even when I try rev it and push it on the motorway it seems fine. So I don't feel it is the fuel pump directly. Thought it might be fuel filter.

Does it give problems even when tank is full. If empty tank probably designed to tip fuel to the back. Is the fuel sender (gauge) working ok. If you prime the fuel (leave the ignition on position II for a few seconds before turning the starter) does it help.

@@CraigsDIY Cheers for the reply, I primed the fuel as your said and this made a huge difference. The car started fine. Also still had the problem without priming, but with the fuel tank not completely full but close.

Ford mondeo always stalls on the first attempt at least mine does.
