Thanks for the video. I just replaced my front struts, inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links and ball joints on my 1998 Toyota Camry. My dad misplaced the fork to remove the ball joints but no worry just wack it with a hammer and a good ole wrecking bar and it popped off. My ball joints had no grease and cluncked when I drove giving so much play to the wheel. My tie rods also had no grease as well as sway bar links. It must of been time since the car has 221k miles. This video was tremendous help in giving me a refresher to what tools I would need.

As of 8/11/2018 there were 21 dislikes, now tell me what is to dislike about these clear cut and VERY comprehensive and at the same time EASY to understand instructions how to replace a ball joint? Even my 16 year old daughter who doesn't know nothing about cars would be able to replace a ball joint after this video. Great job!!

My new 1A Auto ball joints didn't come with grease fittings. I guess that will be ok. I noted the video started with jack stands but mostly was done the vehicle lifted high where it was easier to work. I'm gonna try with the jack stands. May be a bit harder.

I love your whole series for 99 Camry. I just ordered lower control arm set and the set containing inner and outer tie rods with ball Joints to replace my steering components on my 99 Camry. Question is that the ball joints that came with the kit as well as the one in the above link are not serviceable. How come this one in this video is serviceable but those you guys sell are not? Are they as good of a quality? Thank you
@1AAuto

+Daniel Pawlata Thank you for watching, Daniel! There is really no difference other than one being sealed and the other is serviceable. They will be the same quality. Depending on what we have in stock sometimes they come with fittings, but for the most part they will come sealed.

I came here thinking i was going to have to beat the ball joints out of the joint like I've had to in the past and can't tell you how happy I am its a part of the control arm and its as simple as taking of a few nuts with some air tools and swap it out

Great video, thank you for the effort to put it together. I have a 96 Camry and the ball joints seem to be intact, but due to the age of the car and the 142k miles on it, would replacing these be a smart idea for safety and handling reasons?

Great video. So how did you torque the castlenut? I tried using a 19mm crowfoot to torque to 90 ft/lbs but the crowfoot wasn't strong enough and slipped off the castlenut. I would up forcing a 19mm socket onto the castlenut and torqued ot that way. The only problem doing it like that is that the metal ring that was in the way got slightly bent. I was able to smooth the metal ring back out but it's not 100% like it was.

10:17 so essentially I'm replacing my lower ball joint because my wheel fell off and grinded down those nuts with the acorn centering. I've tried other parts stores and they don't come with those nuts. They come with regular nuts that don't allow it to seal correctly. Do you guys carry those or does your lower ball joint come with them?
@HarrySach
@HarrySach 6 жыл бұрын
The ball joints that I ordered from you guys came with 3 locknuts that I don't need and no grease fitting.

+Ro Cla Are there provisions (holes) on the bottom of the ball joints for grease fittings? If there isn't a hole then they are self contained and do not need to be greased.

do you sell the acorn/ sleeved nuts? I changed my control arms and bought new ball joints. I threw away the old control arms with ball joints. now I do not have the nuts. The new control arm and ball joints came with regular nuts.

The cotter pin in my ball joint is horribly mangled and I have no idea how to get it out. The head is buried into one side of the castle nut and the ends are both broken off. I don’t know how to get the rest out. Would I be able to crank the nut hard enough to just break off what’s left as I loosen it, or is there a way to get it out with not enough left to grab on either side with needle nose pliers?

Thanks! as a former Jet Engine mechanic and aerospace engineer, Ive seen a lot of the bolts and nuts that need torquing that are off-set/not readily accessible, and depending on the configuration of the extensions used on the torque wrenches, adjustments have to made for torque settings. I rarely see discussion of that really anywhere on the car videos. You all provide a great service, I have ordered parts from you before, always top notch! Keep up good work!

Torque the castle nut to 90ftlbs (19mm) and the 2 nuts & bolt (17mm) to 94ftlbs. Easy to torque the 2nuts and the bolt, challenge is the castle nut. I did mine just tighten it with close to same amount of arm effort torquing the 17mm nuts and bolt and align the holes for the cotter pin to properly go in to each end. Torque specs from Toyota Factory Service Manual/ Suspension & Axle. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE 5S-FE engine 205kmiles. Old ball joints both seized in the knuckles. I used a $10 Harbor Freight/Pittsburgh Ball Joint Separator (same as what used in the video) then used a 1.5 ton hydraulic floor jack to force the old ball joints out until it snapped out of place.

Does it suffice to just tighten the castle but with an open end wrench? Doesn’t it have to be torqued to a certain spec? Or is it not that critical?
@OMGtheykilledKenny42

Torque spec is 94 ft pounds, but GL fitting a ratchet head and socket in that tight space.
@mtareen
@mtareen 4 жыл бұрын
If you want to torque it then you will have to remove the axel to fit the torque wrench socket. I am sure we can torque it to 94 ft-lb but I am more concerned about over torquing

That castle nut is a pain. Got the open end wrench and attached a pipe to the end of it for added leverage. All I ended up doing was rounding out the castle nut. I hit it with penetrating oil too but the thing won't budge. Any ideas? Thanks!

Chef Jeff find a spot to wedge a pry bar between the knuckle and the side of the new ball joint (careful not to tear the boot). It'll be enough force to hold it in place while you install the nut.
