I just did this job and I have a few tips. Tapping the old axle out really isn't hard. It doesn't take much to get it to free up. Just give it a bunch of little love taps using the room you have. It will go. The hardest part of this is getting the new axle onto the splined shaft on the motor. I took the shock off so I could get a straight shot. Going at an angle wasn't working. Also, make sure that you line up the C clip on that inner shaft so its as even as possible. Getting the axle to pop over that clip is what makes this part hard. Use a dead blow or rubber mallet to bang the axle in. Also, keep the axle nut on so you are not hitting the threaded part of the axle. Don't use a metal hammer. I messed up the threads on the axle shaft doing that and I had to get an all new axle. That sucked. All in all, it wasn't too bad. I made it harder on myself, so I hope my lessons learned helps someone.

I dropped the exhaust down to give room, it’s 4 nuts. 2 at the pre cat and 2 up front. After that it took one hard tap to get the axle out! Also when trying to install the axle, there is a way easier way than this video shows! Get you a wooden dowel about 1” thick and about 2 feet long. Place that dowel on the boot right behind casing that’s started on the shaft. Tap that dowel with like a 4 lb hammer and it will go right up in there. It will not damage the boot at all. Don’t waste your time beating on the end that thing. You’ll be there all day, especially if can’t hold it straight. The funniest thing I’ve seen is people plunging the axel on! I you can plunge the axel on you probably should replace the C clip. Anyway hope this info helps people.

I appreciate you making this video. I'm a woman and trying to find somebody to do this repair on my Honda. Sheds light on the labor aspect of it💯

For those trying to get it lined up to put the new axle in you can also remove the caliper, or the brake line from the caliper(which will require a brake bleed after), to get MUCH more access for a straight shot over that stupid c ring. I did this then put the axle in the hub first to get it lined up nice and straight, after 20 minutes of struggling the 2 minute success was a good feeling.

This video helped...but it doesn't show the exhaust pipe that has to be taken off to get a square hit on the CV joint to compress that C ring that keeps that half shaft on the intermediate shaft. Others have taken the intermediate and the half out together and then separated. I instead got the front end as high as possible in my driveway, after chocking all the wheels and setting the parking brake. Then I got under it and slipped a FLAT pry bar between the exhaust pipes and against the half shaft. I then took a weighted Dead Blow (2 lb I think) and started pounding away. You can imagine how difficult that is on your back with limited room BUT it worked! Got both tools from Harbor Freight a while back. I did not have to remove the exhaust or the intermediate shaft. Using that flat pry bar as a punch helped, it had just enough curve to it.

So my cv wasnt easy to tap out and ruined the seal on the carrier bearing. Im pretty good at finding parts and have people who do it for a living....went to ford dealer they cant give me a part number only the whole assembly going into the trans.. the number i luckily got off the old seal is (xeo269e) but i cant trace it to anything. Has anyone had this problem before?

I have trans fluid leaking at the cv axle at the transfer case. Besides replacing the cv do I need to replace anything at the transfer case and if so what part do I buy? Sorry I know im not using the correct technical terms. Thank you!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED : TAKE OFF THE STURT TO ALIGN THE NEW CV AXLE SO YOU CAN TAP IT IN EASIER !
@aj68663 жыл бұрын
I have found that sometimes u need to soak the input shaft side with some penetrating oil then heat up thr input shaft side with some MAP gas before trying to tap it out due to rust. Be sure to replace the seal afterwards. The main reason, aside from rust, is there is a locking ring on the shaft the axle slides into that binds it up. When installing, put some grease on the splines for easy iinstallation. For the safer, correct way, rent or buy a cv axle puller. I only mention heating it up for someone who does not always have access to the proper tools. Not saying it is the proper way.

For me it was easiest to remove the boot clamp and using a strong piece of wood that went just past the rotor placing it on the flat side of the metal after pushing the boot a bit down. Easier when one person can hold the shaft straight while the other gives a few hits with a sledge. I bought some cv boot clamps and already had those pex clamp pliers. I removed the few black clips to pull the wheel well cover back so I can get the pliers on to reclamp

If yours doesn't go in its easier to have someone hold the baxk part of the axle straight, since it's a female end it wants to hang and go in crooked. Do what this guy did but push in, and have someone hold in the back so it is straight while you push in on the front with one hand and hammer it in with a mallet

I noticed that you used two different sized axle nut sockets. When taking it off, the video shows a 36mm socket and when putting it back on it's a 32mm socket ????
@gedionsamuel22564 жыл бұрын
He probably meant 32 at the beginning. 32 is the usual for most cars.
@gregjones28014 жыл бұрын
I freeze framed the vid and the impact socket used to remove the old axle was stamped 36. As it turns out, when I did my replacement, my old axle nut was 36mm and the replacement TRQ axle nut was 32mm.
@imanalien19843 жыл бұрын
I needed 36mm to get it off...new one came with 32mm but the original threaded onto the new one better than the nut that came with it...I used the 32 to protect the threads of the new shaft as I pounded the new shaft into place and then used the original nut to go back on as it had a built in washer. Tightened per instructions.

Beware it is not this easy on a 10 year old rusty Ford Edge driven on salty Canadian roads. The axle came apart at the back boot when pulling on it to get it out and we couldn't get a good hit on the back with a hammer like this guy cause it is too tight. A pry bar is hard to get in cause you are on your back in the driveway doing this and have no leverage. We had to take the bracket off that holds the inner axle into the transmission and take out the axle then hit the outer axle off the c clamp. Forget about hammering the axle back in with a rubber mallet cause its not that easy. 5 hours later finally got it all back together and top up fluid cause if you pull that inner axle you loose a lot of your fluid. If it was this easy the shops wouldn't charge 4 hour labour rate.
