You could just press the hub out the slide hammer it not needed for the job , also for DIY guys at home With out a press use a huge hammer and socket same diameter as the hub hammer the hub out then remove snap ring , to remove the Bearing find anything same diameter has the hub couple good blows should come out , same procedure to put back together make sure you support the bearing back side so it don’t come apart done several never needed a slide hammer or press just make it a lot easier for sure!

I followed each step to getting the spindle off of a 2003 Camry and your steps were right on point. A auto shop wanted to charge me $600+ to repair damaged bearing. $400 of that was just labor. I was able to save a lot of coin with this video. Thank you so much!!!

Well done, Darion. Exactly the point of the video. Good job saving some serious cash and frankly the pro's wouldn't have done any better than you did. Maybe faster, but you're $400 to the good. Great job!

I purchased the hub and bearings from 1A Auto for my 2008 Avalon. Job took me about 7 hours to do both sides. Hardest part was trying to get the C clip out from behind the bearing. Fortunately the shop I did the repairs had a press like the one in the vid. The left side bearing did not want to come out. I used a slide hammer and 23 piece bearing tool found on amazon or ebay to do the job. I helped tremendously. After spending hours on the first side the other bearing was probably done in less than an hour. This video helped a lot in getting ready for doing the job. This job is very doable. As an average DIYer, the 25 year Toyota mechanic veteran gave me props for tackling this job. He said he wouldn't trust that job to be done by one of his brand new technicians. Thanks 1A Auto.

@@1AAuto well we got back from vacation last night and tried your method. We were still having an issue. I finally determined the CV joint was not pushed in far enough where the cogs were engaged. I took everything back off made sure it was engaged, pushed and pushed and finally made up the difference and was able to get the lower arm to meet up with the one bolt and three nuts. Thanks again. I know where I will be going in the future for parts.

I use the old outer race for pressing in the bearing. Just run it in the belt sander to make it undersized. Also press the inner race only instead of using the 81mm tool. Use the old inner race for this. This ensures there is 0 load placed on the outer race as the hub is pressed in. This eliminates the risk of "false brinelling" the bearing and shortening its life.

1A Auto has directly saved me $5,000 in car repairs. $9,000 if you add in me disregarding a dishonest mechanic saying my car had frame damage that'd need to be stretched out for $4k at his friend's body shop. It was really just a bent strut and control arm, which I replaced using 1A Auto.

@17:38 While installing the hub. WARNING. I ruined a bearing by not using some common sense here. You either want to use the installer disk that it SMALLER than the C-clip, so it sits directly on the bearing surface... OR Press the hub in BEFORE installing the C clip (make sure the bearing is in far enough to install the C-clip though) and use an installer disk that fits over the ENTIRE bearing in the hole. If the C-clip is installed and the bearing installer is big enough that it's just sitting on the C-clip, you'll destroy your bearing. because the inner races will get pushed up a mm or so (thickness of the c-clip). It'll be clear you did it wrong because the hub and inner bearing races will wobble by hand. DON'T MAKE MY ROOKIE MISTAKE! :P

I've seen on other repair vids that there should be a space between the hub and the bearing when pushing the hub back in. You didn't specify that. I'm wondering if you have made an error? I also notice that you didn't keep the dust shield over the axle. Does that mean you are going to collect dust into the space between the drive shaft and the bearing?

Another note. If you do not have the equipment to do this at home, you will have to pay a local machine shop to do the press work for you. This is another issue that should point you in the direction of unit replacement. Unit replacement means getting another complete hub assembly and swapping it in. Used parts are acceptable if they are good. Your old vehicle is all used parts already, in case you don't know it.

there is no hub assembly, the bearing has to be pressed out of the steering knuckle. There is no hub assembly option, you can purchase a bearing and spindle but the bearing has to be pressed into the steering knuckle before it is pressed on the spindle in order to get the snap ring on. You would have to replace the whole steering knuckle

I bought the full assembly so I had to try an remove the one nut mentioned at about the 5:48 minute mark. No go! The car is going to the shop! UPDATE: I took another look and saw that once I get the 3 nuts off and the two on the strut and remove the assembly, I then have better access to that single nut. Going to pick up a bigger and stronger breaker bar as my 1/2" drive breaker bar was bending and close to snapping on one of the three nuts. I think I can do this! Taking a break today - between this and doing two struts on the day before, I am shot.

2nd Update: From watching the 1A Auto video on ball joint replacement, I see that a pickle fork would be needed, and it would most likely damage the old ball joint. So I ordered a new ball joint that I will install on my new assembly. Actually, these two together will make this repair not quite so bad, given you have a big enough breaker/cheater bar.

What annoys me to no end is how you simply cannot buy a pre-pressed hub assembly for a Camry or Avalon for these model years. It adds labor expense to the replacement. Not everyone has that kind of money.

I'm starting to be convinced those dust shields are causing the barrings to go bad quickly. They are supposed to be dust shields but every time you pull one its full of dust and debris that can't escape and is being pushed into the bearing by the cone shape of it. I think I've done mine only like 4 months apart. They shouldn't go bad that quick and I've had it done by the dealership 3x. I'm not putting that dust shield back on next time. Gonna see how long it last this time.

FYI, I found that the inner race of the bearing will sometimes push up as you press the hub into the bearing that has been pressed into the spindle. You may see the rubber o-ring of the bearing pressing too hard against the retaining clip. I used a 65mm bearing driver to carefully press the inner race of the bearing down off the retaining clip to make sure the races were all even again.

Awesome video, I really enjoy the videos from 1aauto.com. When installing the bearing you never did mention the direction to place the bearing in. From what I know the magnetic side of the bearing goes towards the speed sensor, does this bearing have two magnetic sides or does this not matter?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 7 жыл бұрын
+Sledge Hammer Thanks for the kind words! Typically they do go magnetic side towards the sensor. But as a rule of thumb, just take a picture of your set up prior to removing the bearing entirely and then you'll know which way to face it. Thanks for checking out our videos! If any of our viewers need to make this repair, we carry the part shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them. Wow, the Toyota Camry doesn't have sealed hubs on front? Ford does that on Taurus (or Mercury Sable) since '96! Same on Ford Explorer 4WD/AWD. Much, much easier job, no press needed and sealed hubs last longer.

Sorry to hear you didn't have such a good experience. It can be tough to find good help, huh? Another option is to take it to a local shop and have them press the bearings out and the ones in. Thanks for watching! 1aauto.com?KZbin&CTA%20Comment&ATony 866-403-3393

You didn't press the spindle on right you mess up the bearing the won't last you should have pressed on the inner part of the bearing not the outer you put a lot of pressure on the bearing Itself by doing it that way. Other than one little thing you mess up the whole job.

One step at at time, have a cool beverage, some tunes, this video on your laptop nearby, and take your time. It has a number of bolts but it's not that hard of a job. You'll shell out some serious bucks to have a dealer do this plus tie your car up for a few days before they get to it.
