Pulled the switch out last night to discover the headlight wire that connects into the switch was fried and melted the plastic around the connector...cut stripped and crimped a new connector on and she's good as new now. Thanks for your help!

You may want to check under the dash and also in the engine compartment for a broken or frayed wire which could be causing this issue. Also check the dimmer switch (that dims the interior lights) to see if it's on all of the way and also check the back of it to see if it has overheated. Hope this helps you out.

@CKS5000 Start easy, check fuses and replace a couple bulbs even if they look good. If you don't find anything their....remove the headlight switch and reconnect it under the dash so you have access to the plug. Use a test light. The light should light on one wire no matter what, that is the power in to the switch. . If you only get power in and to 1 or 2 wires when your switch is on then replace your switch.

i have a 1990 ford tempo and as i was driving my running lights, interior lights and tailights went out at once. still have brake lights, headlights and warning lights and such. any suggestions? i was thinking maybe the drl module thanks

You issue might be with the switch. It sounds as if the switch is still allowing power to go to the light even after the switch is pushed to the off position. Checking the wiring to the switch down to the headlight will determine if there is possibly a bad power wire some place.

@1aauto got down in there and found out the pigtail to the light switch was burned up a little so replaced it and all the lights but my tailgate marker's turned on. thanks for the help.

There could be a loose ground wire, or even a frayed wire somewhere that may be causing this.

If you have a service manual, it should have a wire diagram for you. It sounds like you could have cross wired something or may not have provided power to everything that's needed.

You may want to check the lights to see if there's a light out.

It may be that, it could possibly also be a fuse, relay or switch too.

You might want to check the wiring going to the headlight for power and work your way back. to the battery.

I have a 1991 Dodge Dynasty with the same plunger type headlight switch. After about 10-15minutes with the headlight on(plunger pulled out) they will start to flicker on and off over and over again, not in a constant pattern either. I got the switch out and tt seems fine except for one of the prongs that stick out for the connector are what looks its discolored from over heating. The green wire is burnt at the base where is connects into a black housing and the housing is melted around that wire

The relay not functioning correctly could be either from the switch, relay or a bad wire someplace in between.

The exact same switch is on my 1983 Chevy Celebrity but there is no way to reach behind the switch to press the button. I removed the lower dash panel but there is another panel behind it! The dash trim plate on my car is one piece that stretches the entire width of the dash. I'm trying to get to the radio to replace it. Even disconnecting the battery terminal is difficult on my car. To get to the battery you have to remove the engine brace, loosen the battery clamp and move the battery just so you can get a wrench on the side-mounted terminals.

I have a 79 Chevy pick up and my low beams work but when I hit the high beam switch all the head lights turn off. When I turn off the high beams the low beams turn back on. Any suggestions on what this problem could be ?

does this also cause the highbeam indicator not to work? Have 79 Malibu, same switch. But highbeam on indicator doesnt stay clicked in. Highbeam dont work. Same part to replace for problem? if not do youhave a video on that repair? Excellent how to btw....much appreciated

I like dimmer switches on old cars that you work with your left foot like my 1968 GTO. Most changes are not improvements, they are just cheaper to make. Old stuff is best to my way of thinking. I got the answer to my question from this video tho', THANKS!

It sounds like you may have a daytime running light option in the vehicle. If for some reason this feature isn't working correctly you could have a bad daylight running light module. I hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

What about the taillight switch? My turn signals went out and don't flash but flash when hazzards are on. And the light doesn't flash on the steering column when trying to actually use. And they just stay lit on the outside as well, no flashes. At this time my brake lights went out as well and someone told me to replace the headlight switch. I've also heard the relay is bad. Any help?
