In this video we wire a turn signal, brake light, parking light and hazard light switch (4-way flasher) circuit. I use the American Autowire 500148 turn signal switch, along with two single throw double pole switches to control the whole circuit. I also use four 1157 two-filament light bulbs, two novita 2-pin flashers, and four fused wires. This style electrical circuit could be used for a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, side by side, or maybe even an electric bike. It’s up to you!

Thanks for keeping it as simple as possible & explaining how it works ! I will be wiring my project as simple as I can .. & using LED , turn ,running lights & stop ... Nothing fancy nor extra .. just like the 1930's & forties .. thinking of using the old truck style steering column mounted controls with built in flasher .. it comes with pig tail wires .. keyed on & off power switch with separate starter button .. leaning towards fused individual power wire system rather than fuse box with relay system .. nothing complex extremely simple ! for my use only .. old school with new technology low heat & low amp draw , along with over kill wire size & properly fused .. my build vehicle has no long run wire over 8 ft .. it's a super tiny truck .. one wire GM alternator .. head light switch has built in dash dimmer switch it's all so a very old style GM truck push & pull style .. I might go with a floor mount High beam switch or toggle switch .. not sure yet just in the planning stage & gathering all the parts first ...

Using a DPDT switch for the hazards and 4 diodes you don't need a second Flasher and it is very easy to wire. Use regular Schottky diodes used for Solar panels. They have THICK leads and are easy to solder, crimp connectors to or just twist together. Solder or crimp the Cathode, with each of the turn signal wires that go to the American Autowire (25Amp @12V) 500148 Switch. The Anodes all go together and to the DPDT switch. Sounds Complicated but it's not. If you want to make it look more sleek, look up MBRF20200CTR 20 Amperes Insulated Dual Common Anode Schottky Half Bridge Rectifiers TO220F.

So I watched your 6 relay video and now I've seen this one. I like this as it is more simple but I will need to add headlights onto the running light circuit. I am guessing i can come off the single throw dual pole with a relay and have that power the switch on the relay so that the headlight load is not on the same switch.

@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
This way is a great option as long as you don’t go crazy adding more incandescent bulbs. If you start adding more bulbs, then you run the risk of reaching the amperage limits of the switches. The American auto wire 500148 switch is rated at 25amps @12v. I believe the others are 15amps @12v (that one is a guess). Each 1157 bulb can pull about 2.1 amps with both filaments lit. If you swap to LED’s throughout, then the amperage draw is super low, so adding bulbs is less of a risk. I have another method of wiring this circuit that I want to try, so stay tuned for future videos!

hazards ,brake and parking lights are in my opinion safety circuits and should bypass the ignition switch. my understanding is that in practice the turn signals always pass through the hazard light light switch wiring, so when hazards are turned in it just bridges both turn signal wires to a battery live. but good basic circuit

You should be able to use this diagram for the high and low beam headlights. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpnCi5V_d62AY68. As for relays - it’s necessary for the headlight circuit, but not for the rest unless you are added more bulbs to the circuit. The switches used can handle the four 1157 bulbs perfectly. Thanks a bunch for watching the video! I appreciate it!

Nice and simple, thanks. Wanna maybe consider doing one for cornering lamps? I'm working on adding cornering lamps to my trailer (7'x16' Enclosed), to flood out from under it's wheel wells, activated by the turn signals as they become engaged. However, the cornering lamps do NOT flash. My set up is about 47' combined length, and at night it's almost impossible to see where my wheels of the trailer are as I turn/back into and out of streets and customers driveways. Main vehicle is not equipped with cornering lamps either, or I would just tie into them.

I want one wire from the light to do turn signals and brake, and other one to do taillights but I don’t get how the turn signal will override the 12v from the brake switch if both are used at the same time.

I think - When you have your breaks on - Then turn a turn-signal on - The break filament "Stays On"... ???? Your way works and I understand the reasoning, "To use one 1157 bulb"... I think, most lights have an 1157 & 1156 bulb... (Running lights - Break lights - Signals - Flashers are front & rear signals) - I'm not criticizing you, I'm just trying to clearing it up in my head...

Had question about 500148. Is this just a standard dpdt 8 pin toggle switch with just two outside pins jumped to reverse pins on opposite side?i see on back they just add in jumpers and removed those outside pins and charge 4x as much for a 8 pin dpdt you can just jump across yourself. Cant see 50 for a 13 toggle just because they removed pins and added a jumper in back.

In the factory wire harness for the 1976 Ford LTD what wires in the circuit and where are they can I import some 1156 turn indicators to the back of the car and stop interrupting my brake lights. Breaking up the 1157 and to 11:56 for breaking and parking lights is pretty straightforward and simple but it's that brake light interruption and sending power to the same filament when you release your foot off the brake is where I'm confused how to convert my car to 1156 bulbs in the back end pairs of each parking brake reverse turn indicators.

OK, Love your explanations on these circuits, but. The brake lights are wired to a hot all the time fuse and the hazards are not on the parking light side . They are on the brake /turn signal side the brighter filament , and on some older cars the parking and headlights are wired to hot circuits and cannot be turned off by the ignition key . My 83 Ford F100 is that way. My 88 Stang is that way too. I can turn on them lights without even putting the key in the ignition. And by using the 500148 switch you don't need any relays anymore?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
You are totally right on all of that. This is just one method of many that could be done to accomplish lighting these lights. In this scenario, you don’t need relays as long as you don’t overload the switch or turn signal flasher with high amperage bulbs.

This design will only work if you are using the switch in the video from American Autowire. The flasher and pressure switch are each on their own terminal on the back of the switch. The magic is not in the wiring, it’s the switch itself. The inner working of the switch are what allow that functionality. I’ve researched the heck out of this and cannot find any other switches that do this, other than factory turn signal switches ofcourse.

Yeah thats a good video too....since my car has no wites at all...it would be awsome if you would figure out how to do the same wiring using a 60s headlight switch and the blinker on the column...but use your wiring...it loooks so easy and simple...

Lots of great info, but I do have one question, is the american autowire switch a dpdt switch?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
No, it’s a custom switch that I cannot find anywhere else. The inner workings allow the brake and turn signals to function properly.

Got 1985 gmc c7000 gonna cant find the flasher relay for fuse box. I guess I'm gonna have to wire up some lights. Question will the Cole Hersee Toggle Switch - 3-Position, DPDT On-Off-On - 25A at 12V, 15A at 24V - 6 blade terminals work instead of the American toggle?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure the cole hersee switch will not work the same way. I looked into it at the time and decided it was different internally. That being said, I’m just some guy on the internet, so definitely do some additional research, and let me know! :)

Why no relays in this set up opposed to the other set ups you’ve shown?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Many cheap 12v switches are rated for very low amperages, like 3-5amps for example. To allow a low amperage rated switch to control a larger amperage circuit, you need to use a relay. The relay (typically rated for 25-30amps) then tells the lights to turn on and off, and the low amperage switch tells the relay to turn on and off. If you were to run a 10 amp light circuit through a 5 amp switch without any relay, you would burn out the switch. However - the switch used in this video is rated for 25 amps (I contacted American autowire to ask), and that means you can use a wide variety of bulbs without worrying too much. Most 1157/2057 incandescent bulbs are about 2.5amps each, so even with 4 running at once, you’d only reach 10 amps, which is well within the safe zone of this switch. Hopefully that makes sense. If not, let me know and I will try again! Thanks for the great question!
