How To Replace Honda Captive Rotors On The Car - EricTheCarGuy
www.ericthecarguy.com/
This video is an update to the original video that I posted on this job that covers doing this procedure on the car. In the last video I was not able to do this because the lower ball joint was broken and I was also replacing the bearing in addition to the rotor.

Thanks for the vid! I replaced all 4 rotors, the bearing pressed right out with the air hammer in less than 2 minutes! The hardest part was separating the ball joint from the lower control arm, I pounded on it with a sledge hammer for a half hour and no go. I destroyed the boot on the first one with a pickle fork. on the second, jacked up on the lca, stuck a 1/2 in ratchet in between the lca and knuckle, dropped the jack, kicked down on the top of the rotor, and BAM!! Popped right out!!

@CincyPlasmaTech WD-40 is not my preferred penetrant but you raise an interesting point. To be honest I think 'beating' on the bearing would do more damage than the penetrant. In addition I'm putting it on the outside of the bearing NOT on the bearing itself so if any got in I would suspect it would be a minimal amount. Good question.

@mdLexX I hear that a lot, seems like a lot of work to me considering your not changing rotors all that often, Honda just recommends pad slapping them unless they are warped and even then if there is enough left to the rotor they can be machined on the car without having to remove them. Between you and me the TL rotors warp ALL the time so having easy access to them might not be a bad thing.

@rightfuzzball I'm very grateful for it, I used to work on peoples cars in their driveways in all kinds of weather, this is much better really. As for the bike it might be a fuel issue, when fuel sits for a long period it gets stale, you might try fuel stabilizer before you put it away next year and perhaps seafoam and some new gas for now to see if that helps.

@dandim23 It's really no safer, the rotor isn't going to come off as long as the wheel is there to hold it on. I think they did this to help eliminate any hub runout issues that sometimes occur causing pulsations.

@fastvpbt1 That sounds like an alignment issue and I'm not sure if you can correct it with an adjustment, you may have to replace some parts. Honestly I would have to look at it for myself to really have an idea. Good luck.

You are right about the potential of damaging the wheel bearing if you use the slinding hammer and exposes the wheel bearing. In the past that is what I do because I learned it from others. Eventhough I never have a come back on those capture rotor jobs, but I think doing the right way is more customer/ wheel bearing friendly. It may take a little more time, but it is less straining on the body. Good video.

Thank you very much Eric. I have been using a few of your videos to figure out how to get a rotor off of my '95 Accord Wagon.. nice vid eric! wish i had a garage like that! wow. mine is a one stall with a no-engine camaro in it. i'm off to go get my suzuki 450 running,it idles, part throttle it dies or keep twisting and it winds up and goes like a bat outta hell. it may be my petcock along with the gummed up carbs, the bike sat all winter. was running ok. then this happened. so off to wrenchville..later.

@96HondaEX5Speed You actually run the risk of damaging the wheel bearing doing that because what you are doing is separating it. I've seen more than one come back because someone tried to 'short cut' it as you suggest only to have to replace the wheel bearing in the end.

@bustfer07 It's really just as bad as under-filling it. The oil will come into contact with the spinning crankshaft and get whipped up into a foam, the foam doesn't lubricate at all and as a result the engine will suffer from a lack of lubrication. In short, it's not a good thing.

I just did this earlier, and I was stressing because I was worried I would get the rotars off, but instead I took the axle nutt off first, then the 4 fastner bolts, and tell why the rotar was loose off the bearing assembly so easily then all I did was remove the back 4 bolts that hold up the bearing assembly, didn't need to hammer anything or use special tools. FYI my rotars and bearings were super rusty, is this just a method to spend more time, or was I just lucky switching things up my way?

Will WD-40 (or similar solvents) harm the wheel bearing? I was concerned that any bearing lubricants would break down when using WD-40 to loosen any rust holding the wheel hub to the steering knuckle. BTW, I found it useful to loosen the wheel hub fasteners in the front about the same time that the wheel nut is loosened. They are tight, and it beats chasing a hub and rotor around on the ground, and expect to get high torque while doing it. No bench vise here!

@wormguts23 I'm not with you on that if I'm honest. Considering the effort and expense I don't think it's worth it because you really don't have to replace rotors all that often and if there is enough left on the rotor they can be machined on the car, converting them is more vanity than anything in my opinion.
